Amazon cuts affiliate programs in CA…Other merchants follow suit

I've seen the needle
and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie's
like a settin' sun.

--Neil Young

The State of California, like many other states, is broke.  Nationally, our state indebtedness exceeds 22% of GDP - not a pretty picture.  Excessively generous salaries, pensions, health care and other costs are bankrupting many which is why we see MN, IL and NJ (and others) all in danger of default.

The state of CA recently enacted tax policy whereby any merchant who does business there must pay a sales tax - even if they don’t have a physical presence there.  That applied across the board to all Amazon affiliates so Amazon pulled the plug on their affiliate program in CA, effectively cutting off sales to CA residents from this lucrative seller.

Others, including small sellers are beginning to follow Amazon’s lead.  Tax policies, at any level of government, usually wind up hurting consumers and rarely achieve the financial goals of government.

For a long time, smuggling tobacco products became lucrative and a revenue source for ‘terrorists’ due to excessive state and federal taxes.  For awhile one could purchase such items online from Europe and from Native American tribes, especially among the Seneca nation tribes in New York State.

New York has attempted to violate the sovereignty of these nations by sending in law enforcement and through the courts.  Since gambling and tobacco sales have proven a viable revenue source for these tribes (hey, the white man stole just about everything else they owned over the past century) and they’re mighty mad, often staging various protests.

In the end, everyone loses.  The consumer loses by paying higher prices, the tribes lose revenue, and the taxpayer loses due to the legal resources used by state governments to control tribal income.

Government has proven itself poor stewards of resources and their spend-aholic ways constantly drives them to seek new revenue sources that they can squander.  They always need more money to help “you name the cause.’  They remind me of drug addicts who always need another fix.

Overall, our entire tax system is antiquated and hurts everyone in the process…but don’t count on Congress or other legislators to repair the mess they’ve made.

A new federal program is offering aid with a sweet kicker: It doesn't need to be repaid. New program to help homeowners struggling with a mortgage.

Rolled out by HUD and the nonprofit housing advocacy group NeighborWorks America, the program is making loans with far better terms than anything on offer at a local bank. The loans are interest-free. Payments go directly to the lender for a portion of the borrower's monthly mortgage, including missed payments or past due charges. And when the assistance period -- which runs for up to two years -- ends, 20% of the loan is forgiven with each passing year. In other words, for qualified borrowers who stay in their home for at least five years after the assistance period and who don't fall behind on their mortgage again, this money doesn't have to be paid back.

To be eligible, homeowners must have lost income and be at risk of foreclosure due to involuntary job loss, underemployment or a medical or other economic condition; details on the application process are available online through NeighborWorks America

If your dryer is taking longer than normal to dry clothing, the problem may be your lint trap as a thin film from fabric softener can build up over time on the screen.  Remove that residue by washing the lint screen every other month with dish soap & warm water.

The Nanny State Updates…

What’s happening in Greece will likely happen here…State & city governments are drowning in debt and laying off workers in record numbers.

From coast to coast we are seeing police, firefighters and teachers being laid off.

Some of the austerity measures that we are witnessing are quite stunning. According to the Wall Street Journal, the small town of Alto, Texas has laid off its entire police force for the next six months....

People here are bracing for a spike in crime after the city put its police force on furlough.

"Everybody's talking about 'bolt your doors, buy a gun,' " said Monty Collins, Alto's mayor, who was against the measure.

The truth is that entire states are on the verge of financial meltdown.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center released documents claiming that full-body airport scanners caused "cancer clusters" among TSA workers who operated the machines in Atlanta and Boston.

According to the documents, emails sent to the Department of Homeland Security claimed that Transportation Security Administration employees at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were "falling victim to various forms of cancer, strokes and heart disease," and that workers were "concerned about radiation levels [they were] being exposed to on a daily basis."

Similarly, supervisors at Boston Logan International Airport in emails to DHS claimed that that a "growing number of transportation security officers have thus far been diagnosed with cancer."

Outcry in America as Pregnant Women Who Lose Babies Face Murder Charges

Women's rights campaigners see the creeping criminalization of pregnant women as a new front in the culture wars

Gibbs became pregnant aged 15, but lost the baby in December 2006 in a stillbirth when she was 36 weeks into the pregnancy. When prosecutors discovered that she had a cocaine habit – though there is no evidence that drug abuse had anything to do with the baby's death – they charged her with the "depraved-heart murder" of her child, which carries a mandatory life sentence. Gibbs is the first woman in Mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of her unborn baby. But her case is by no means isolated. Across the US more and more prosecutions are being brought that seek to turn pregnant women into criminals.

If the government really wanted people to pay their "fair share" it would throw out the tax code and initiate a flat tax...no deductions, no confusion.  It should be apparent to everyone by now the biggest threat to our financial well being and national security is our own government!.  --The Poor Man

The Parting Shot…

Disappearing Middle Class Jobs - Nine Ways to Control the Masses

The American dream is dead for the majority of America," financial guru Suze Orman told Forbes last year, speaking about her upcoming book "The Money Class."

The dream she was referring to isn't a Cinderella story. Rather, Orman believes the hope of someday owning a home, of working one job for life and retiring at 65 has been crushed by the financial crisis. "The middle class has disappeared," she said. "Many of the millions of jobs lost I don't think are coming back. I am really afraid for the majority of Americans today."

The government answer is simple:  We need more citizen control!  We don’t want anyone to think for themselves so we provide government indoctrination centers (schools); we don’t want anyone to question anything we do so we provide the nightly news.

The easiest methods of controlling the masses fall into several broad fronts:

>Control the (meaningful) job supply - turn everyone into serfs dependent on government handouts.

>Control the food supply - pass laws making it illegal for hobby farmers to sell their produce, create hybrid seeds which cannot be reproduced by farmers, make prices of retail food stocks more and more expensive.

>Take away your guns or make gun ownership expensive and cumbersome and of course, gun owners are always suspect (as portrayed in the media).

>Use the court systems to freeze and seize personal assets; pass so many laws that everyone becomes a lawbreaker and then use ridiculous fines to get their cash.

>Control the media - they’re only five major media corporations left and they are beholden to the government for their licenses and tax breaks.

>Distract the masses through perpetual wars and other so-called crisis situations (like the war on drugs).  A terrific way to divert valuable assets away from our own infrastructure and making us energy independent.

>Use non-elected bureaucratic agencies to create so much red tape no one, not even lawyers can decipher or comply with them; then fine the hell out of anyone or any business that fails to comply…thus driving businesses away.

>Create an incomprehensible, unfair tax system that discourages citizens and businesses alike.

>Fail to create a viable alternative energy policy or rational domestic drilling and exploration system to get us off our foreign oil addiction; driving up prices for everything.

As our gutless politicians continue to pass the buck in Washington, things will only get worse for mainstream Americans.  We have entirely too much duplication and costs associated with government at all levels, too much red tape and other barriers to starting a business…those folks fiddle while Rome burns!

The failure of today’s economy to generate and sustain decent jobs can be traced to the breakdown in the post-World War II social contract that supported a tandem growth in productivity and wages. From 1945 to 1979 productivity and real wages both grew by approximately two to three percent per year…since then, productivity continued to grow steadily while real wages for high school men remained stagnant and the gaps between productivity growth and college graduates expanded, albeit at lower rates
