Earn Money at Home

Income diversification is an important financial element, exponentially more important for the single mother. In today's economic situation, you need to be able to protect yourself and your family, and one way of doing this is to create several independent streams of income.

In addition to having a normal nine to five day job, incorporating side streams into your income bucket will help prepare you for financial emergencies and aid you in the event that you would (God forbid) lose your job. Of course, building up those side streams initially takes a lot of work, but the best part is you can make it fun and learn to work for yourself.

When thinking of what you can do to start your side business, think of the skills you already possess and then become your own boss. When you are working for yourself, you have room to experiment and see what produces the most income and what the most effective strategies are.

If you are clueless as to what you could do to start up, here are just a few suggestions. If you have/are…

Sales Skills/People Person

Think about becoming an independent sales rep. There are so many products that you can sell for a commission. Just to name a few:

  • Pampered Chef
  • Mary Kay
  • Avon
  • 31 Products
  • Herbalife
  • Scentsy

If you can find a quality product and have the ability to reach out to people and promote, then there is a lot of potential of being a sales rep. You could even build a website with all of your contact information and directions on how to order.

Writing Skills

There are a lot of places that will pay you to write articles for them. The pay generally starts low, but once you prove yourself as a quality writer, the income potential is practically limitless. Local magazines usually accept articles and there are hundreds of places on the internet that will pay for your writing. Just to name a few:

Get Free Broadband Internet Access with FreedomPop

Broadband internet access is generally expensive, but with FreedomPop it can cost you nothing more than a $100 deposit (that you get back when you cancel your service). All you do is order a mobile hotspot and turn it on when it arrives. From there you'll instantly have a Wi-Fi network that provides a reasonably fast data connection to up to five computers through Sprint's WiMax network. By default you only get 500MB per month for free, but if you complete offers (that mostly involve providing information) you can earn extra data. This takes a bit of work, and won't provide enough data access for heavy internet users, but it's fantastic for casual web browsing or getting an occasional on-the-go connection.

If you have internet access, you don't have to pay for phone calls. Gmail, via Google voice, offers free calling to landlines and cellphones between the United States and Canada. All you need is an account and an internet connection and you can talk for free. You can even use an app like Talkatone (iOS and Android) to make those free calls from your mobile. Other VOIP solutions work, too, but most will cost you something. Using Google won't.

Becoming a helpful online reviewer and gaining entrance to a reviewing program like Amazon Vine will gain you access to a ton of free movies, music, and books—especially books. According to work-life blog Savvy Sugar, the popular book recommendation site Goodreads offers similar benefits. Try both and see what you can get.

Find Free Books Online

Plenty of books are available freely online. Google Books offers them as text and Books Should Be Free as audio. If you have a Kindle, or a free Kindle app, you can get public domain books for free from Amazon as well. All you have to do is search for and download what you want.

The gadgets of today (and tomorrow) are the ones everybody wants, but they aren't the only good things out there. If you're willing to accept an older item for free, you can often find them on sites like Freecycle and Craigslist. Everything on Freecycle is free, but on Craigslist you just have to do a search for $0 items and the search terms "free" and "curb alert" (which refers to a bunch of free stuff being dumped by the side of the road) or go to the Craigslist main page and click on the "free" section. Also, if you sign up for the great web tool IFTTT (If This Then That), you can use it to provide alerts based on Craigslist searches so you're notified when certain free gadgets show up. (Here's an example for free TVs in Los Angeles.) That way you don't have to waste a bunch of time hunting for the perfect deal in a stream full of mediocre ones.

About.com's Freebies page and the Frugal subreddit will alert you about places offering free (or sometimes just cheap) stuff. Those are just a couple of examples. Free stuff is everywhere, and you're likely to find even more if you just keep watch as you go about your day.

BRUCE'S POOR MAN'S CRAB CAKES
16-18 ounces canned chicken
1 1/2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
2 tablespoons fresh herbs, such as parsley and chives, chopped
2 tablespoons green onion tops, finely chopped
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 egg
Pinch salt, optional
Pinch pepper
1/4 cup oil

Break the chicken up into very small bits. Squeeze all of the moisture out of the meat. Mix all of the ingredients and shape in 4 patties. I put a sheet of wax paper on a small baking sheet then dropped the chicken mixture into piles. I used my hands to shape each pile into a patty. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least 1 hour. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the patties 4-5 minutes per side, flipping carefully, until golden brown on each side.

Makes 2-4 servings
Can be frozen

A charity called ShelterBox gives out tents and other essential equipment to victims of war and natural disasters around the world; the lightweight tents the charity provides can withstand winds of up to sixty-two miles per hour; the charity also provides thermal blankets, stoves, pans, utensils, tool-kits, and even crayons for children

The Nanny State Updates…

California Cities Ban Smoking — at Home

In what may be taking the “nanny state” to the extreme, 18 cities and counties in California have banned residents from smoking — in their own apartments and condominiums.

The communities have banned smoking in all existing and new multi-unit housing, according to the American Lung Association’s Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing, which calls the effort “the next frontier in California’s ongoing efforts to protect its citizens from secondhand smoke.”

A report from the organization states: “Although California has made great progress in getting secondhand smoke out of workplaces, for the many Californians who live in multi-unit housing breathing secondhand smoke which drifts from neighboring units, balconies and outdoor areas has become a real health problem.”

In all, 33 California cities or counties are cited in the report as having some kind of smoking ban on multi-unit housing. Some require that smoking is banned in a certain percentage of units, or that a certain number be designated as smoke-free.

Oooh, Police have become the new ‘Untouchables”

The continuing efforts of prosecutors and police to jail citizens who photograph or videotape police in public. For a prior column, click here. Now, in California, another such arrest has been videotaped in California as Daniel J. Saulmon was charged with resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer when the video shows him standing at a distance and not interfering in any way with the arrest.

Today the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review an appeals court decision that blocked enforcement of the Illinois Eavesdropping Act against people who record police on the job in Chicago and other parts of Cook County. Under the law, the strictest of its kind in the country, recording cops without their permission is a Class 1 felony, punishable by four to 15 years in prison.

The Parting Thought-

Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, popularly known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act (Public Law 84-627), was enacted on June 29, 1956, when Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law. With an original authorization of 25 billion dollars for the construction of 41,000 miles (66,000 km) of the Interstate Highway System supposedly over a 10-year period, it was the largest public works project in American history through that time.

The money for the Interstate Highway and Defense Highways was handled in a Highway Trust Fund that paid for 90 percent of highway construction costs with the states required to pay the remaining 10 percent. It was expected that the money would be generated through new taxes on fuel, automobiles, trucks, and tires. As a matter of practice, the Federal portion of the cost of the Interstate Highway System has been paid for by taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel.

Back then fuel cost less than 20 cents per gallon.  Today, the average tax on fuel (state and federal) is 49.9 cents for gasoline and 53.8 cents per gallon for diesel.  In the 1950s, the average cost was about a nickel a gallon.  Road repair and construction costs per mile today average a million dollars per mile.  The Fed has denigrated the value of our dollar so much, we pay more today than ever before and the government is always seeking new ways to increase that tax.

One of the reasons why road repair cost so much, when performed by government workers, is the high retirement packages they receive in comparison to the private sector.

(Ironically, personal income tax forms then were the size of a postcard.  Today, we have the most complex, unfair system in the world.)

Under Obama’s tenure, fuel costs have doubled since he took office, further proof of inflation’s impact on the public.
