The key to spending less than we earn is simple - it is called discipline. Whether early in life or late, we must all eventually learn to discipline ourselves, our appetites, and our economic desires.

DIY GENERATOR TO HOME HOOKUP

A generator is a core component to many people's emergency preparedness plans. (Maybe you have a cool charcoal powered or a multi-fuel generator.) However many fail to think through how exactly they will power the items they want to run when the grid is down.

In June of 2012 my family experienced a 10 day power outage. It was eye opening. It was 100 degrees during the day with periods of heavy rain. I had to run a sump pump to keep my basement dry, a refrigerator, freezer for food preservation, a portable AC unit in the living room to protect my infant, we charged phones, and ran the wifi router. I had power cords everywhere

Portable Off Grid Oven & Stove

Often in our emergency preparedness plans we initially think about power generation - myself included. (Multi Fuel Generator, Charcoal Powered Generator, Easy Generator to Home Hook Up). We often say that we don't want our food to spoil. We often don't give much though into how we we are going to cook the food we are saving when the lights are off. My weber gas grill is cool - but I'm not going to percolate coffee on there. I have a backpacker's ultra lite stove - but that won't help much with my family of four.  More at:

What Makes My Electric Bill So High?
I always do my best to keep the electric bill down in our home. I'm constantly turning off lights and appliances and reminding my family to do the same, yet our electric bill never seems to decrease. Am I missing something? Where does electricity waste happen normally in homes? Is there something more I can be doing? I've noticed a lot of cable companies are now providing services to manage energy usage in homes. Is this something worth looking into?
