Why You Should Rotate Your Stock Now

I’ve been a ‘Prepper’ years before it became fashionable. This goes back to meeting up with John Shuttleworth, founder of Mother Earth News.  John had a strong influence on me.  This lifestyle was further boosted from my friendship with several Mormon families that I had met while attending Arizona State University.

My hidden hoard of silver and gold coins allowed me to live well after a divorce cleaned me out of all my other financial assets. (I had also lost $250K that same year after selling my business to a man who failed to pay me).

Since 1999 we’ve stockpiled food, water and ammo too.  We had our first website through Yahoo’s GeoCities if you can remember that.  We stored enough to feed family and friends for a couple of years.  At our 38 acre farm we even had our own shooting range along with two folks who were licensed gun instructors.  They liked my cooking so we exchanged meals for conducting a variety of shooting and gun safety programs for us and our friends twice a year.  A televised Fox TV News interview at our “compound” forced us to seek a more low-profile approach to living.  Our privacy is important and one of the reasons we turned down making an appearance on the Extreme Preppers television show.

Indeed, many subscribers who listened to our warnings a few years ago about the surge in ammo prices are thanking me now.  (Guess what, as I reported a few weeks ago, the last lead smelter plant in the US closed and this will boost the price of ammo again).

Unlike other Prepper groups and blogs who focus on a single issue or two, the Poor Man has always taken the Big Picture approach with a more encompassing focus on food storage, sideline income and skill building, political perspectives and insights to build a better understanding of how we’re getting screwed, how to protect your privacy and more.

Our site isn’t considered fancy and it’s somewhat disheveled, just like me but it’s always voted among the best for its content and most recently for our political insights.

Too Well Stocked?

One problem we’ve only recently resolved is the expiration dates of our stored food.  We didn’t or couldn’t eat it fast enough.  We frequently would up donating case lots of canned goods to area food banks.  This is not a bad thing but it can be expensive.

Everything I’ve researched indicates that one can safely consume products long after its expiration date.  Canned vegetables lose some of their nutrient value but they will fill your stomach and the liquid inside the can be a lifesaver.

This is one of the reasons we now stock many food items in a quantity good for up to one year for our personal consumption and use freeze-dried and dehydrated food stocks for long term use.  I consider canned and frozen foods as short-term food insurance - because of their relatively short shelf life. But freeze-dried foods . . .

This site offers a useful chart and indexing of the shelf life of various foods and other resources which will come in handy.

How to Make a Citizen's Arrest Against a Cop

HOW TO FIGHT POLICE ABUSE: A COMMUNITY ACTION MANUAL

Police abuse is a serious problem. It has a long history, and it seems to defy all attempts at eradication.

The problem is national -- no police department in the country is known to be completely free of misconduct -- but it must be fought locally. The nation's 19,000 law enforcement agencies are essentially independent. While some federal statutes that specify criminal penalties for willful violations of civil rights and conspiracies to violate civil rights, the United States Department of Justice has been insufficiently aggressive in prosecuting cases of police abuse.

An alarming number of abuses by law enforcement personnel against citizens (including against the unarmed and elderly, handcuffed female prisoners, and even children are being dragged out of schools in handcuffs for such ‘offenses’ as wearing a politically incorrect T-shirt, etc.) have been reported in the news in recent years.  Further, the creation and enforcement of dubious, un-Constitutional laws and other abuses of power by local officials in Washington DC, CA and NYC are being reported in record numbers.

It is time for citizens to fight back, to strike out against such abuses through the creation of citizen posses.  Citizen arrests of politicians and law enforcement, the use of Jury Nullification tactics and more should be initiated against this abuse of the public trust…after all, you can’t trust the fox to protect the hen house.

Sometimes outmoded and abusive police practices prevail largely because no one has ever questioned them. In such cases, the simple act of spotlighting a problem can have a powerful effect that leads to reform. Just by raising questions, one person or a few people -- who need not be experts -- can open up some corner of the all-too-secretive and insular world of policing to public scrutiny. Depending on what is revealed, their inquiries can snowball into a full blown examination by the media, the public and politicians.

One of dozens of recent examples of out-of-control cops-80 year old killed:

In the United States, civilians are empowered to stop perpetrators in the act of a serious crime and use reasonable force to hold them until an officer of the law arrives on the scene. The conditions under which this is permitted vary from state to state, so it's important to understand the laws in your region in case you are ever in the position to stop a criminal. Read on to learn more about how to make a citizen's arrest in the United States.

What is an arrest?

We can thank Black's Law Dictionary for a good definition: "The apprehending or detaining of a person in order to be forthcoming to answer an alleged or suspected crime." See Ex parte Sherwood, (29 Tex. App. 334, 15 S.W. 812).

Why We Need a Citizens Posse

A strong argument can be made that the right to make a citizen's arrest is a constitutionally protected right under the Ninth Amendment as its impact includes the individual's natural right to self preservation and the defense of the others.

Indeed, the laws of citizens arrest appear to be predicated upon the effectiveness of the Second Amendment. Simply put, without firepower, people are less likely going to be able to make a citizen's arrest. A random sampling of the various states as well as the District of Columbia indicates that a citizen's arrest is valid when a public offense was committed in the presence of the arresting private citizen or when the arresting private citizen has a reasonable belief that the suspect has committed a felony, whether or not in the presence of the arresting citizen.

A citizen may place a police officer under arrest. However, a citizen is not protected in the same manner as a law enforcement officer. If a citizen attempts to make a citizen's arrest unlawfully, the officer may use physical force and arrest the citizen; the citizen may then face criminal prosecution. Citizen's arrest laws vary from state to state. Research your state's laws and carry out an arrest of an officer in the proper manner to avoid injury and prosecution.

Research your state's laws concerning citizen's arrest. Use the Internet to search for your state's laws or visit your local law library. Gain a firm understanding of your state's laws.

Witness an officer committing a crime. In most cases, the crime must be considered a felony in your state and you must physically witness the crime in order to make an arrest.

Never file a complaint directly with a police agency e specially if the complaint is of a serious nature, see an attorney! If you do plan on hiring an attorney, get one who doesn't work in your area. Don't get a lawyer from your town, county or from the surrounding counties. Local lawyers work with same judges, prosecutors and police officers on a daily basis and may not want to win your case as bad as you do.

You may also contact your State Attorney General. For serious incidents call the ACLU hot line 1-877-634-5454 or contact the Department of Justice Click here for the (DOJ) site.

How can I recycle...?

Most communities now have recycling systems set up for paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass. However, even the most recycling-savvy can be overwhelmed by the amount of household waste that goes beyond what municipal recyclers and compost bins can accept. This resource library can help you to find recycling resources for less common materials, letting you divert more of your waste away from landfills, and helping you to better reduce, reuse and recycle.

Websites

The online recycling directory Earth911 (http://earth911.com/) is a great tool for finding local recyclers for almost any item. Their hotline (1-800-CLEANUP) or website can also provide you with information on your local municipal recycling practices and regulations.

Another recycling directory, http://www.1800recycling.com allows homeowners and businesses to enter their zipcode, select the recycling service they need, and discover the nearby organizations and retailers that accept and process those recyclables.

Finally, try the website AltUse, http://www.altuse.com/, for reuse suggestions for a wide range of items.

Don’t ask me why it works-Boost the flavor of roasted vegetables like squash and potatoes if you cut them at an angle before seasoning and roasting.  Angled cuts create more surface area for the vegetables to caramelize in the oven’s heat.

Preparing for blackouts, Jar lantern, Are you the problem or solution

Poor Man Survival

Self Reliance tools for independent minded people…

We’re on your side!

"If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government..."
-- Alexander Hamilton

6 Tips to Prepare for Blackouts

It’s been a tough winter for many and like other folks, we’ve had several power outages…thank goodness we own a generator…

1. Follow energy conservation measures to keep the use of electricity as low as possible, which can help power companies avoid imposing rolling blackouts.

2. Fill plastic containers with water and place them in the refrigerator and freezer if there's room. Leave about an inch of space inside each one, because water expands as it freezes. Chilled or frozen water will help keep food cold during a temporary power outage, by displacing air that can warm up quickly with water or ice that keeps cold for several hours without additional refrigeration.

3. Be aware that most medication that requires refrigeration can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist.

4. Keep your car tank at least half full because gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.

5. Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it. Garage doors can be heavy, so know that you may need help to lift it.

6. Keep a key to your house with you if you regularly use the garage as the primary means of entering your home, in case the garage door will not open.

DIY Jar Lantern

The Jar Lantern is a contemporary take on the traditional gas lantern. It was inspired by seeing sunlight refract through my glass water bottle one afternoon, and thinking to myself that it was a bit like carrying a jar full of light. This brief moment of illumination sparked something in my mind that made me wonder how I could capture this experience more permanently.

What if you chose to live off the grid – even ditching all utilities – only to learn that the local government has rules against such a lifestyle? Even worse, what if you wanted to live off the grid and the local government threatened you with eviction?

This
is still America, but that’s exactly what is happening to one Florida woman who is a guest on this week’s edition of Off The Grid Radio. Her name is Robin Speronis, and her inspiring story of self-sufficiency has made national headlines – as has her fight against the government that is trying to boot her from her home…

Robin decided to go off the grid after her husband passed away several years ago. Listen as she tells us:

  • What gradual steps she took to go off the grid.
  • How she lives, day to day, without utilities.
  • What tips she has for other off-the-gridders.
  • Why she is refusing to give in.
  • What the next step is in her legal fight.

Robin’s fight is our fight. Don’t miss this week’s episode!

Why is it that so many Americans today refuse to offer their own solutions to the problems they perceive in the world? Is it laziness, stupidity or both?

How would you go about living day to day without the bureaucracy, the welfare, the infrastructure and the safety nets? This is how all liberty movement activists are going to have to start thinking if they want to change anything.

The nonparticipation principle is best summarized like this: When facing a corrupt system, provide for yourself and your community those necessities that the system cannot or will not. Become independent from establishment-controlled paradigms. If you and your community do this, the system will have one of two choices:

  1. Admit that you do not need them anymore and fade into the fog of history,
  2. Or reveal its tyrannical nature in full and attempt to force you back into dependence.

In either case, you win. You have taken proactive measures to remove yourself as a cog in the machine. The machine can then try to demonize you or attack you. But it will ultimately attack from a place of social and moral weakness, and you will defend from a position of logistical and moral strength.

Stop waiting for the system to change. Change the way you live and survive. Build your own localized systems and walk away.

Learn a vital trade skill; grow your own food; purchase resource-rich, raw land; learn self-defense methods beyond what law-enforcement personnel are trained in (which is not too difficult); take emergency medical technician training courses so you can provide general and emergency medical care for your family; get your children out of the State-run common core indoctrination centers and home-school them; and build neighborhood watch groups, emergency response groups, barter markets and alternative economies.

Decentralization is about dissolving our unbalanced relationship with the state and taking away its power to dictate how we live.

Revolution must be directed at the oligarchs, not just their mascots. And if anyone asks you to rally around a revolution that does not name central banking and international banking entities and the men who run them as direct culprits, they are probably controlled opposition. We don’t need a French or Bolshevik Revolution to replace old puppets with new puppets; we need to go to the very heart of the cancer that has stricken our Nation and remove it. If this means we have to physically fight back, then so be it; but we must be smart in how we fight.

In the end, the average citizen is his own defender, his own governor, his own industrialist, his own kingmaker. He may consciously realize this, or he may be oblivious. All the solutions are right there in his hands, waiting to be used. The saddest truth of all is that the only thing holding him back from legitimate freedom is he. Only when we stop avoiding the pain required to procure independence will we finally have it.

Land of the free? Government shuts down kids' lemonade stands, issues fines
The most innocent of childhood business ventures, the lemonade stand, is quickly becoming something of a mascot for the downward spiral of America into an oppressive police state. Local governments all across the country are increasingly making headlines for shutting down lemonade stands and issuing fines to young children for not obtaining expensive peddler's licenses or vender's permits, or for allegedly violating local ordinances.
