Chemical-Free Homemade Wallpaper Remover

Removing old wallpaper is messy and if it is an older home it is likely there are several layers of paper which need to be removed.  We once owned a 20 room home built in 1895 which seemed to require non-stop work in order to upgrade it to our 21st century requirements (starting with the installation of circuit breakers to replace the old fuse system).

Our current home was built in 1900 and has been expanded several times over the past 100 years and my wife decided it is time for a facelift as well, starting the removal of some wallpaper and decorative trim.  Here’s a pretty easy method to use.

Ingredients

⅓ cup of lemon juice

2 cups white vinegar

2 cups water

Supplies

Spray bottle

Scraper

putty knife

old debit card

plastic  tent stake

The Process

Before you begin anything, make sure your room is ready for its facelift. Remove all the furniture that you can, and either cover the flooring and furnishings that remain or be prepared for an extra step in your clean-up process.

There are different methods of wallpaper removal, but what works is to remove the top layer of paper first – it is thicker and comes off easily. What’s left is a thin, papery residue that is quite stuck to the walls, especially in the areas where glue was applied. It can be picked off by itself, but it takes ages.

When you are down to a thin, brown layer, spray a section with your solution. Start with a small patch or a partial wall to see how quickly you will be able to get the paper off. Let the wallpaper removal solution sit for 3-5 minutes. This is just enough time to let the solution penetrate the paper and begin to dissolve the glue, but not enough time for it to dry.

When your wallpaper is wet and kind of slimy, go ahead and begin peeling it off. Fingernails are perfect for starting it out, but I wouldn’t depend on your hands too much. This solution is acidic, so too much exposure will leave you feeling raw. It’s best to use a scraper for the majority of the work.

Get it Cheaper - A reader has created a website - http://whohasitcheaper.com/ that compares prices on eBay and Amazon. Although mostly useful for buyers it does give sellers an opportunity to compare prices and maybe even find the occasional arbitrage item to flip from one site to the other.

DIY Oxygen Cleaner

Do you like the name brand oxygen cleaner for your laundry, but dislike the price? Try making your own. Mix one cup hot water, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide.

Just soak the clothing in it for 20 minutes to overnight. Then wash as usual. I've found that this is easier on fabrics than bleach.

Knowing When and
How to Stockpile Groceries

So you are using coupons, learning how to price match, and focusing on needs versus wants. Yet you still feel like you could be saving more money. Another tool in the bargain-hunters toolbox is stockpiling. The idea is to stock up on items when they are on sale. Yet it is not quite as easy as it sounds. Here are some tips to streamline stockpiling.

Stop Draining Dollars
Pour money down the drain. That's what many of us do every time we run the water. But you can stem the tide with a few simple steps that will lower your water and sewer bills and, sometimes, your electric bill as well. Even if you use well water, you will save on your electric bill and possibly pump repairs too.

Illegal aliens are bringing with them diseases which have not been seen in the US for decades.  The union representing the Border Patrol is concerned and you should be too…Medical journals are reporting that antibiotics are no longer as effective in the fight against disease.

Could this be the prelude to what is a real Zombie Apocalypse?

The Ten Plagues Hitting America Right Now

Michael Snyder from End of The American Dream website is one of the best online journalists writing today. His articles are always well-researched and not afraid to tell the truth.

This article reveals the ten "plagues" striking America right now:

In Florida health officials have discovered the very first confirmed cases of the chikungunya virus to be transmitted locally. In other words, it is now being passed to people that have not even traveled out of the country.

An epidemic of the virus has already been declared down in Puerto Rico, and authorities are deeply concerned about the possibility of one up here as well.

Already, cases of the virus have been reported in 30 different states and the total number of cases in the U.S. is more than five times higher than in any other recent year.

If you live in an area that has a lot of mosquitoes, you might want to be very, very careful right about now because this is a virus that is exceedingly painful...

Many aren't aware of this, but in the Western U.S. especially, something as tiny as a flea can transmit life-threatening diseases that can spread into full-blown deadly plagues. In Colorado recently, one of the deadliest forms of the plague hospitalized a man and took out his dog. Colorado health officials believe the life-threatening disease, pneumonic plague, was likely transmitted by fleas.

Pneumonic plague takes out man's dog, sends him to hospital

The infected man is being treated, but his dog wasn't as fortunate. After killing the man's dog, the pneumonic plague has since spread to three other people -- an outbreak unlike any in the past decade. Since 1957, Colorado has documented 60 cases of pneumonic, bubonic and septicemic plagues. Nine people have died since 1957. In the past decade alone, 12 cases have reared their ugly heads. Four cases in a matter of weeks is a huge uptick in occurrence but doesn't pose a serious threat, according to Colorado health officials.

Trying to be honest about the situation, without underscoring the fear, Jennifer House, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, stated, "We've had quite a number of cases this year."

"We do believe the outbreak itself to be over," she said.

Is the outbreak contained?

·          How can the Colorado Health Department be so sure that the plague is over?

After all, if the fleas are still harboring the disease, households with pets may be more susceptible. The
Colorado health officials believe that the fleas are carrying the disease which was first contacted from infected prairie dogs or rabbits. Fleas can pick up the Yersinia pestis bacterium from infected mammals like prairie dogs, ground squirrels, mice and chipmunks.

What's more is that pneumonic
plague is the most serious form of the plague and is transmitted through coughing and sneezing. The bacteria enter its victim through the person's lungs and respiratory system.

There are two other plagues that can crop up in the Western U.S. Septicemic plague is contacted when the bacteria make their way into the bloodstream. Bubonic plague penetrates underneath the skin. The plague typically affects Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. According to the CDC, about seven people are infected yearly in the U.S.

The Third World War has begun - the invasion of America is already under way

Here's a brilliant piece from Tom Chatham at Project Chesapeake, a really interesting blog site that covers preparedness, economic collapse and more.

Chatham writes:

It has been decided that instead of raising the living standards of the poor to the south, the living standards of those to the north will be lowered. It will continue until the masses beg for government to ease their suffering. They will willingly give up all of their rights for the promise of relief. They will get little relief and only more misery as time goes on.

The elimination of the southern U.S. border has allowed many thousands of illegal aliens from all over South and Central
America to come here in hopes of a better life. The influx will continue and increase substantially before it stops. To eliminate any resistance to a North American Union, America and Canada will be destroyed economically and socially to make subjugation easier.

With too many poor to care for, government services will break down and stop. The nation will be destroyed economically and socially to the point of no longer functioning. An outside institution such as the UN with outside backing will come in to stabilize the situation and take control. Once they are here they will never leave. Any rights you now have will be redefined by this group according to their standards

Make Cash and Find Prepper Supplies at Auctions

Get Prepper Supplies from Auctions…Make some cash!

OVER the years I’ve made a fair amount of money buying and selling at auction and have managed to feed the ‘collector’ in me and have also purchased prepper items I need including propane & oil lanterns, guns and ammo, coins and silver and even MREs and dehydrated food stocks.

The auction I am attending this morning is also featuring used vehicles, farm equipment and hunting items!

I buy online and at local auctions.  I don’t use eBay much anymore due to dismal sales and hoards of stupid rules.  When I still lived in AZ we had an auction and liquidation company and rented space at an antique mall.  We also offered direct sales and appraisals (used mostly by insurance firms, the Phoenix police, bankruptcy court and the IRS).

I still conduct two auctions each year, selling off storage units which have been abandoned (yes, just like the Storage Wars television program).  It’s something I enjoy and can still make a few bucks without a lot of effort or overhead.

Recently, I bought a case of industrial sized rolls of toilet paper, the kind you see in public restrooms.  I paid $2 for it and it will likely last the two of us at least a year if and when the SHTF! (pun intended).

{How many of you have given any thought to what you will use for this necessity?  When I visited some ancient Roman barracks we found the garrison bathrooms still usable.  Our guide told us Roman soldiers used sponges attached to sticks to clean themselves.  Pity the slave charged with cleaning those]!

Have you ever thought about using auctions to buy and sell?  If you hook up with a local auctioneer and sell excess items in this fashion, you can make earn some cash and you don’t have to ship the items or worry about some buyer extorting you on eBay’s feedback and guaranteed refund system!

Just like anything else, you should attend a few auctions before getting involved on a regular buy/sell routine.  This will allow you to get the hang of how they work and a chance to meet the auctioneer and staff.  We’ve known a local auctioneer for several years and we use his services nearly every month to earn some extra cash and in some months, I spend more than I make (beware of auction fever…the competitive streak when you and another buyer want the same item and you wind up over bidding/paying for the item).

Auctions are a good way to pick up things you need at bargain prices and most of the time you do not need to pay sales taxes either (every state is different and you might consider getting a resale permit in your state as well –there is no charge for this-).

Why Martha Stewart Likes Drones, Water as a Weapon?

Drone Wars – Why Martha Stewart Loves Them

Have you heard that Amazon wants to become part of the drone culture?  They’ve been demonstrating how drones can deliver products quickly.  They just need government approval to begin their service.

Ms. Stewart has been raving about her Parrot AR Drone 2.0 Power Edition which she operates from her iPad sending it over her farm because she “loves getting overhead shots of the garden and livestock.”

In Japan, 2,300 drones are used to spray about 85% of crops and UAV technology for agriculture will make up about 80% of the commercial drone market.  In Africa, drones are being used to spot poachers.  The Navy is using them to search out pirate camps in order to warn ships.  Stranded hikers are being found by drones as well.

They make political ads more interesting too…a campaign ad from a Montana congressional candidate shows him shooting down a government drone which had been spying on him.

The dark side of drone use of course falls on the shoulders of our government which misuse them to spy on private property and citizens and we’re already getting reports of near misses between commercial aircraft and drones.

Personally, I thought we’d all be using flying cars by now like on the Jetson’s cartoon.  Hobbyists are already at risk.  In April, a drone fell out of the sky and hit a triathlete at a race in Australia…we could always use private drones to fight back against unwanted surveillance from police helicopters and more.

The rate at which the Earth's groundwater reservoirs are being depleted is constantly increasing. Annual groundwater depletion during the first decade of this century was twice as high as it was between 1960 and 2000. India, the USA, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China are the countries with the highest rates of groundwater depletion. About 15 percent of global groundwater consumption is not sustainable, meaning that it comes from non-renewable groundwater resources. The increased use of groundwater for irrigation also results in a rise in sea levels, with roughly one tenth of the total sea level rise during the period from 2000 to 2009 due to groundwater depletion.

The biggest killer:  Since they pose little threat to property, heat waves are not included in most disaster reports.  Since 1986, heat in the US has killed almost three times as many people has hurricanes have.

Water as a tool for controlling citizens?

The Detroit water system has been neglected for 50 years under  democratic neglect, corruption and mismanagement…millions of gallons are being wasted daily due to broken mains and broken pipes.  Thousands of residents are suffering through shutoffs from the city creating a beehive of anger and disgust.  Water rates in the area are some of the highest in the nation (more than double what we paid in the desert of AZ).

Water is a renewable but finite resource. Nature’s water-replenishment capacity is fixed, limiting the world’s usable freshwater resources to about 200,000 cubic kilometers. But the human population has almost doubled since 1970, while the global economy has grown even faster.

Major increases in water demand, however, are being driven not merely by economic and demographic growth, or by the additional energy, manufacturing, and food production to meet rising consumption levels, but also by the fact that the global population is getting fatter. The average body mass index (BMI) of humans has been increasing in the post-World War II period, but especially since the 1980’s, with the prevalence of obesity doubling in the past three decades.

Heavier citizens make heavier demands on natural resources, especially water and energy. The issue thus is not just about how many mouths there are to feed, but also how much excess body fat there is on the planet. For example, a study published in the British journal BMC Public Health has found that if the rest of the world had the same average body mass index as the US, this would be the equivalent of adding almost one billion people to the global population, greatly exacerbating water stress.

With the era of cheap, bountiful water having been replaced by increasing supply and quality constraints, many investors are beginning to view water as the new oil. The dramatic rise of the bottled-water industry since the 1990’s attests to the increasing commodification of the world’s most critical resource.

In the late 1980s I wrote a study for the National Bottled Water Association and the Poland Springs Water Co., each of which predicted Americans would consume ever increasing quantities of bottled water in the coming decades due to concerns over the quality of local supply and because of the status symbol factor.  I was right on both counts.  I also predicted aquafiers in many parts of the nation would encounter shortages as a result of this trend and because of certain climate factors which had been predicted by the weather service.  Recently, President Obama went golfing on a course in CA which is experiencing drought conditions; apparently oblivious to his actions.

Not only are water shortages likely to intensify and spread, but consumers also will increasingly have to pay more for their water supply.

This double whammy can be mitigated only by innovative water management and conservation, and by developing nontraditional supply sources. As in the oil and gas sector – where tapping unconventional sources, such as shale and tar sands, has proved a game changer – the water sector must adopt all unconventional options, including recycling wastewater and desalinating ocean and brackish water.

Your comments and feedback are always welcome…

Bruce ‘the Poor Man’

Make a Biogas Generator to Produce Your Own Natural Gas

Transform grass clippings, food waste and livestock manure into renewable biogas energy with a homemade biogas generator.

A 200-gallon biogas generator in Oregon turns 15 pounds of food waste into cooking fuel daily. As food and yard waste decompose, methane and carbon dioxide are created, inflating the rubber bladder to create the pressure necessary to supply a gas burner.

Rethink “waste” and generate!

Reducing Your A/C Bill

One way to cut the cost of using your central A/C is to provide some shade for the outdoor portion of the unit. You can use bushes or even a section of wood fencing. Just make sure that you leave enough space for air to circulate and for a repairman to access the unit. Not only will you reduce how hard the unit works, but you'll probably increase its life, too!
