Hillary, Trump, Bernie or None of the Above?

Both Trump and Clinton are taking a lot of heat in their race to become the nominee of their party for President…their trust scale for each of them is low both inside and outside their respective party and even in the foreign press.

Trump’s often aggressive manner and open bashing of anyone who gets in his way has turned off many within his own party and members of many minorities who openly and sometimes violently protested at his political rallies.  Both candidates rank low in polls on the honesty scale.

I see ‘Never Hillary,”  ‘Never Trump’ and even ‘Never Mind’ signs everywhere.  Poor Bernie never had a chance as he was set up from the get-go by the Democratic party as a straw candiate but surprised even himself in the primaries and I am bit surprised he never confronted Hillary about her false tax returns [which she was recently forced to amend to reflect some ahh, major ‘inaccuacuries,’ or other problems of her past. Trump won’t release his returns until the IRS finishes his audit, which is standard for any business.

Young people have voted for Sanders versus Clinton by almost comically wide margins.  They favored him 54 percent to 37 percent in a USA Today Poll taken in March.  In the Iowa caucuses, Sanders beat Clinton 84 percent to 14 percent among voters under 30.

Hillary’s campaign is still plagued by potential criminal charges stemming from her mishandling of sensitive emails by having a server at her a home while acting as Secretary of State, something she shoudn’t have done.  Hillary has a lot of previous baggage as well dating back years from Whitewater to Benghazi [even so far as insulting the widows of those killed in that fiasco] to insulting her Secret Service staff during her previous tenure in the White House.

Most insiders feel she was second rate Secretary of State and that she’ll simply become Obama Part II and will carry on his anti-gun program and ‘give all the illegals a free ride’ program.

The former first lady runs about the nation telling black audiences they are victims [oh how they love hearing that] ‘systemic t racism’ and white privilege.  Meanwhile, Hillary polls horribly among the large majority of white males.  A lot of voters have left the GOP because they’ve become weak kneed on many issues have allowed Obama to run ram shod over issues while ‘apologizing’ to the world for all the wrongs the we as a nation have supposedly done-none of that makes many white voters happy.

[I wonder how many voters remember that Hillary functioned as one of the vicious partisans on the Watergate committee? ]

One pundit we learned is trying to assemble a $100K reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest and imprisonment of Hillary!  While a Canadian site is offering free immigration assistance to anyone who wants to leave the US if Hillary becomes President…to counter that site, a dating site, Maple Match, offered to do the same if Trump becomes President…

Either way, as most of know, if our system works the way it’ supposed to [it didn’t always with Obama at the helm] “the country can ill afford four years of a left-leaning  Hillary Clinton with the Middle East in turmoil, an anemic economy, and as many as four Supreme Court seats coming for grabs,” said Greg Jones of DailyCaller.com

Peter Beinart in the Atlantic  said “the bad news is that the Republican party is about to nominate the most dangerous presidential nominee in American history…but Trump is not going to beat Hillary in November.”

It’s obvious this flatworm hasn’t been studying what just took place or how angry many Americans have become and despite what polls among Hispanics and women might suggest, they all ignore the unregistered independents [such as myself]  who often decide elections!  Nearly everyone, including many Democrats such as the coal miners in W. VA, are angry with Clinton and others who see her as a job killing pro-NAFTA free trader.

One-third of the families of frontline manufacturing workers during Obama’s tenure in the US are enrolled in a government safety-net program like food stamps or medicaid, according to researchers at University of CA at Berkeley…these factory employees include machinists, assemblers, and metal workers.  Is it any wonder miners don’t want to continue NAFTA style policies of the Democrats?

In April alone the labor force shrank by 362,000 people and retailers report record number of new closures while Ford and Nabisco are shipping worker jobs to Mexico [Oreo cookies, for example, will no longer be made in America].

Many in the media still underestimate Trump.  His message of “Make America Great Again,’ resonates with many Americans who tired of what Obama did to undermine our nation internationally and many feel Clinton helped promote that decline.  Unlike Clinton, Trump is more compelling and larger than life by comparison.  Many see her as frumpy and old which is one reason why she lost the younger vote to Sanders.

As an independent I haven’t had this much fun watching a political race in years.  The last time I was personally involved was when I a registered Libertarian and campaigned for Harry Brown in 2000!

What I’ve learned in all these years is primarily two things:

>Your vote in national elections really doesn’t matter

>We need to get big money out of politics and restore real democracy back to the people

What do you think or you just another party member?

P.S.  Many years ago I served as an intern for Congressman Charles Vanik, a Democrat, and helped Congresswoman Frances P. Bolton [before her passing] on occasion and although I’ve written about politics for decades and have frequently been encouraged to run for office, other than a stint as a city councilman, I’ve never held office.  I’m starting to wonder if perhaps I should.

Recession Busters and Resources to Improve Your Life

Recession Busters: Save Money, Make Money

Everywhere you turn inflation and other money parasites are trying to break your budget. As promised, each week the Poor Man will bring you new ways to either make or save money. For instance if you're trying to save money, make sure you shop alone, or only hit the stores with very thrifty friends.

New studies in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services reveal that even the most tight fisted shoppers end up spending more than they intended when shopping with indulgent loved ones. The reason? Seeing people you trust drop loads of cash makes 'treating yourself' seem normal – and that ups your odds of overspending.

The average family spends $963 a month on groceries so in order to save money it is important to shop strategically. Experts agree that Wednesday is the best day to shop as that is when the new ads and coupons come out. Studies show that purchasing your meat in the first 90-minutes after a store opens is the best time as that is when stores put meat on clearance and you can get 50% off last night's meat. Personally, we've stopped purchasing ground beef as I refuse to pay its high price and instead substitute other cheaper cuts such as ground pork or chicken. Indeed, if it's not on sale, I don't buy it.

Purchasing a head of lettuce versus pre-cut bagged lettuce is far cheaper and that applies to all foods...anytime food is already prepared you pay more. It is cheaper to buy a whole chicken than one that is cut up. Yes, it is easier but you pay for that convenience!

Impulse shopping is what kills most budgets. Always have a list. I am always prepared to take advantage however of unadvertised store specials.

  • If at all possible, avoid shopping with young children-they want everything and can be tyrants of impulse shopping. Show them the list and remind them if it is not on the list, it doesn't go in the basket. Extras are allowed only if on close out or sale. Make a game of it.
  • More stores are making use of electronic coupons tied into your loyalty cards-use them. Kroger, where I shop sends our family a weekly email with coupons that we can load to our card. An additional perk is that we use their pharmacy [I use a lot of drugs for my heart condition] so also get additional fuel points and have saved as much as a dollar per gallon when filling our gas tank-a big savings!
  • Because beef has been so high I have stopped buying it – even ground beef. Instead, I buy whole pork loin which has averaged $1.50 per pound. I can grind my own to use in a variety of recipes or thin slice it for Mexican dishes or make my boneless pork chops.

Stop Money Dripping Away

If you read my column on a regular basis you know one of number one complaints about MI is its high cost of water. Despite being surrounded by the largest repository of fresh water on the planet, we pay some of the highest water bills in America. For two of us we pay nearly $3,000 annually and we don't own a pool or grazing animals [we can't afford to]. Instead, they base their fee partially on the value of the property, something I have never heard of anywhere else in the nation. It gives meaning to the “G” in government meaning GOUGE the citizen.

The price of residential water service is going up faster than the cost of nearly every other household staple in 30 major US cities, according to water conservation news site CircleofBlue.org. To reduce your bill, get smart about how your family uses water. The biggest source of use is the bathroom [so stop bathing-just kidding] where the average shower consumes 50-gallons per day. Beyond the obvious notion of taking shorter showers and replacing old shower heads and kitchen sinks with water-miser low flow devices, you consider using rain barrels and replacing old toilets with more water efficient ones.

We looked into getting a well at our home but apparently it is not a viable option but we're now considering a gray water system. Thankfully, at our mini-farm where we plan to eventually retire, we do have a well system.

...A Final Note: Some of us were having a discussion this week about the benefits of using TSP to boost the performance [when my Dad was alive he worked for DuPont & would bring home 55-gallon barrels of it] of washing machines, dishwashers, cleaning grease off driveways, etc. However, since phosphorus has been removed from most detergents, borax is often used as a booster.

Borax [sodium borate] can help soften water and improve the effectiveness of laundry detergent but it is not quite as effective as TSP [tri-sodium phosphate] in dislodging dirt and oil. We also used TSP and aluminum foil as a means of shining sterling silver by placing it in a plastic tub with hot water and sterling flatware for 15 minutes or so, then wipe them down with a clean cloth.

Inequality for All

Poor Man Survival

A Digest of Urban Survival Resources

The American Government has become a bureaucratic tumor, no longer does it work for the people. It is sucking the lifeblood and freedom from the people it is supposed to be serving. It's only a matter of time before it self-destructs. >the Poor Man

Inequality for All

An economist walks past a hundred dollar bill om the sidewalk and doesn't pick it up. His friends ask why. “If it were worth something, someone else would have grabbed it already.” And that kind of sums up how many people today think about Obama's efforts at helping the middle class.

Fewer people are spending any real real money but they are going into debt again and the layoffs and retail store closings are starting again and cities are still languishing...It's happening in China and in Europe too.

No sooner had Mr. Trump become the presumptive GOP nominee and the kindergarten antics began. Former GOP presidents refused to support Trump because their boy didn't get the nod, GOP big shots wouldn't add their support offering a wait and see promise [hoping perhaps Bernie would pull off a miracle against Clinton] and some groups are urging advertisers such as Coca Cola to withhold support of the GOP convention in Cleveland this summer.

In recent years the GOP has become notorious for its impotence and it refuses any kind of Viagra. Trump, an outsider, using his own cash, managed to thumb his nose at the political elite and managed to break the sound barrier of politically incorrect sound bites by tapping into the anger and frustration of the middle class feels against career politicians who have screwed them and the nation while serving their corporate master.

If you're a political outside the two parties make it especially difficult to run-they've designed it that way on purpose. Just ask anyone from the Libertarian Party or other third party.

Ironically, polls indicate the majority of Americans do not trust either Clinton or Trump and as usual, it will boil down to choosing the lesser of the two evils but it is interesting to finally see someone outside of the political mainstream achieve what Trump did.

Some Democratic Party members, even rank and file Democrats, have grown sick and tired of the Clintons. There's even a rumor floating around that hints that she'll make Obama her running mate! If something were to happen to Hillary, Obama would become President again.

If that were to happen, our freedom would further erode, especially in the area of gun rights and it is speculated that Hillary would nationalize retirement accounts under the so-called Guaranteed Retirement Accounts [GRAs] first mentioned by Obama in a State of the Union speech.

Trump was further chastised on a Yahoo news story for a potential plan to wipe out the national debt with a semi-bankruptcy plan. The response was immediate and harsh as to be expected from the ill-informed. Think about however, both parties have been bankrupting this nation for past 50 years. Our income tax system is a bad joke and our spending power is has eroded by 45% in just the past 15 years! The Fed [which is a bunch of bankers Thomas Jefferson warned us against] has done a great job of denigrating the value of our dollar already thank you.

In either case, should Trump and Clinton become the nominees, I predict we'll see one of the dirtiest races ever waged between the two parties. The Clinton's in particular, are no strangers to dirty politics.

In the Grip of Greed

Thanks to former President Clinton financial markets are now akin to casino only most people don't seem to get it. The game is rigged by the Fed, the banks and high-frequency traders. Clinton' elimination of the 90-year-old protective Glass-Steagall Act allowed Wall Street unrestrained gambling with virtually no government oversight which led to the crash which nearly wiped out America and which the average American is still paying for. [Why do you think Hillary got paid more than $640K from Goldman-Sachs...to keep the Act from being reinstated should she be elected to the oval office, of course]. Many economists are already predicting a repeat of our earlier crash – only worse and much of it can still be blamed on the revolving door between officials in DC and Wall Street.

The regulatory state in DC is nothing more than a wholly owned subsidiary of Wall Street.

There have always been booms and busts but as the Fed continually introduces more artificial unknowns and as the government continually introduces more job choking red tape and regulation [at the state and federal level] these recessions become worse and we become less competitive. According to Shadow Stats, for instance, our jobless numbers hover more closely around 22% versus the 5.65% number Obama gives us [The government is famous for its verisimilitude].

Trump is right...the system is rigged but it is not just elections. The economy is rigged against working people. The income gap in America has grown under every President since Clinton's second term creating a sluggish, unequal and crisis-prone economy because of tax giveaways, financial sector deregulation, lack of oversight and more.

American capitalism has become a sort of crony capitalism more akin to a third-world autocracy than a supposedly free-market system.

The system is rigged because we have the most expensive government can buy...

The headlines look good now but if you dig deeper you'll find trouble. Unemployment has dropped partly because a huge number [something which Trump and others have pointed out] have given up looking for a job. The labor participation rate dropping to a 38-year low. Household income for the average American family, meanwhile is still $4,000 lower than when Bill Clinton left office. This has been the weakest recovery in the postwar era, said the Wall Street Journal in an editorial recently.

America has seen a wage stagnation and a decline in manufacturing plus a failure to find a new source of middle class jobs to replace it. [sources: Robert Reich's InequalityforAll.com and Bruce David's How to Survive the War on the Middle Class].

Pity the young, said Rich Miller in Bloomberg.com – A coming collapse in investment returns means 30-year-olds starting to put aside money today will have to work seven years longer or save almost twice as much to build up the same nest egg as their parents. That bleak finding indicates the golden era for investors is ending.

The Tax Foundation, a non-profit think tank released their annual report last month and it contained some sobering realities about the cost of government.

>In 2016, Americans, will pay over $3.3 trillion in federal taxes and $1.6 trillion in state and local taxes or 31 percent of the nation's income.

>Americans will collectively spend more on taxes in 2016 than they will on food, clothing, and housing combined!.

  • If you're bummed about your income, join the crowd Impatience with income has led to a wavering sense of financial insecurity in the U.S. How safe do you feel?
  • John Williams of shadowstats.com tracks what the official government numbers would be if honest numbers were actually being used, and according to him U.S. GDP growth has been continuously negative since 2005.

I know it's a challenge for many of us to save money today, especially if you have children. That's why I frequently write about part time income strategies [you can get my Escaping the Rat Race CD ROM for only $5 ppd. at our storefront]...further, I always urge folks to grow their own food, and to buy their own home with at least an acre or more so you can grow food and perhaps have a bit of livestock. This I feel, makes an ideal wealth preserving tool and is something you can hand down to your children.

Yours for better living,

Bruce, 'The Poor Man'

Minimum Wage: The Eternal Experiment or Should WeTry Another Way?

Poor Man Survival

Self Reliance tools for independent minded people…

ISSN 2161-5543

A Digest of Urban Survival Resources

"There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want
merely because you think it would be good for him."

-- Robert A. Heinlein
(1907-1988) American writer

Minimum Wage: The Eternal Experiment or…Should We Try Another Way?

The cost of living in the United States has continually risen during the past two decades while wages and benefits have fallen. Unemployment numbers are far higher than the false numbers provided by the White House and Obamacare costs have tripled in less than two years and nearly 10 percent of the population cannot afford any kind of health insurance.

America continues to lose its middle class and it is one of the reasons why there were so many angry voters who supported Trump…and many more voters were angry to learn about wealthy politicians and corporate leaders who were stashing cash [$7.8 trillion] in Panama along with the ties Mrs. Clinton has to yet another potential series of scandals .

Yet, in America many still whine about demands for hikes in the minimum wage so folks can live a little better life. Proponents for the hike got a win in California [one result of it being so over regulated is that a bare bones cost of living for a family of four is estimated to be $48,000] and in New York with bills which raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour over the next six years.

This resulted from grassroots efforts started by fast food workers in 2012 but it is gamble say many in the business community. Many predict it will shutter businesses but no one knows for certain as they are still debating the effects of the wage hikes from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Doomsayers have decried every increase as far back as I can recall. Oddly enough, in the mid-1980s I wrote a column a business column about General Electric’s pioneering practice of off-shoring US jobs and how it could lead to “hamburger flippers wouldn’t be able to afford $40,000 cars’ and how Wall Street would begin eliminating pensions and health care pensions.

The column appeared in the Wall Street Journal as an OP/ED piece and the response indicated that I had lost my marbles…turns out I was right and they were wrong. The American worker and the middle class did get screwed.

Both states have built-in safeguards. California has a trigger halting increases in the event of a recession and New York doesn’t raise the suburban and upstate rate to $12.50 until 2020, and further hikes depend on economic conditions.

Isn’t it a hoot however that such conditions seldom prevent politicians at either the federal or state levels from getting a raise even if they DO NOT DESERVE ONE!? In the meantime all those politicians who voted for these measures is giving themselves a round of applause and a congratulatory slap on the back-what a grand job!

There is some research from economists like Alan Krueger and David Card to suggest that moderate wage increases do have positive effects, partly due to greater employee retention and productivity but some argue these wage hikes are not modest…some argue that studies indicate that even a 10 percent wage hike reduces employment by 0.7 percent.

I’m not so sure. I favor the economists that tell when manufacturers lay off 400 US workers and send those jobs to Mexico to make Oreo cookies, that’s when employment is reduced AND sale of the produce in America is reduced because my neighbors are pissed about the layoffs and buy ZERO Oreo cookies!

Seattle and San Francisco recently raised their minimum wage and they did not become wastelands…perhaps they cut the pay of local politicians to make up the difference? Now that’s an idea most citizens could get behind…

Parting thoughts…

20 Consumer Hacks You Can Use to Save Money Now

Poor Man Survival

Self Reliance tools for independent minded people…

ISSN 2161-5543

A Digest of Urban Survival Resources

Sometimes you get the peanut, sometimes you get the shell...the story of my life. >>The Poor Man

20 Consumer Hacks You Need to Know

I know everything is cyclical and this past month has been a bitch. Our online sales at every site we own have been nearly flat. The only bright spot was a physical auction I conducted last week. To compound my frustration a wind storm blew off half our roof and also damaged our ISP leaving us without full internet access and despite my best technical efforts, my primary computer is about to become an electronic filing cabinet while I await its replacement.

Our vehicle is starting to drain our account as well...a few hundred there, a hundred here and soon it's another $1,000 and I'm just thrilled about all the summer expenses [if summer ever gets here] we incur each year with tons of soil, seed, fertilizer, etc. I'm ready to drop anchor on a houseboat somewhere and become a damned hermit. Beside, I like fish but my dog -a lab if you can believe it- hates water!

With all that in mind I thought I would share some of Steve Gillman's thoughts on saving money...

One of the best ways to save money may be to complain, and Comcast offers plenty of reasons for complaints. So I recently called to say their service was too expensive and I wanted to cancel, and they cut my rate by $17 per month for six months. I saved $102 for a few minutes on the phone — and it was the third time I’ve done that with Comcast.

You too probably love to save money and/or get better products and services, so add regular complaints-by-phone to your arsenal of consumer hacks. And keep reading to learn why you need to abandon your online shopping cart, order fries without salt, buy auto insurance in December, how to get free extended warranties, and much more.

  • Trade-in Your Stuff for Amazon Gift Cards

What do you do when you no longer need your DVDs, textbooks, and electronic devices? Don’t sell them for a few pennies at a rummage sale! Use the Amazon Trade-in Program instead. Submit your things to see if they qualify, print a mailing label, and send everything off to Amazon. You’ll be paid with an Amazon gift card.

  • Time Your Farmer’s Market Visit

The best time to get a deal on vegetables at a farmers market is during the last half-hour before they close. I’ve bought tomatoes and other vegetables for half-price in the final 30 minutes. Vendors are happy to sell them rather than pack them up and possibly throw them away if they spoil.

  • Get Fresher French Fries

Sometimes those fries have been sitting there for a while before they get scooped into a bag or box for you. But if you have a few minutes you can get really fresh fries. Just ask for them without salt. The kitchen staff will have to cook a new batch, because the ones waiting are already salted. Once you get your fresh fries you can salt them yourself to taste.

  • Get Your Warranty Extended for Free

When the cashier asks if you want the extended warranty, do you say yes? According to a Card Hub Sudy 31 percent of people buy extended warranties each year. But many are already covered for free by their credit cards. And Card Hub found that none of the cards which have this extra feature require you to sign up or register the product. Check your credit cards and buy your next printer or TV with one that offers an extended warranty.

  • Use an Amazon Price Tracking Service

Not sure if you’re ready to pay the price for something you see on Amazon? Use a price tracking service like CamelCamelCamel to show you whether the price is trending up or down. It will also notify you when there’s a drop in price.

  • Use Cash Back Websites

Cash-back websites make a commission when you visit retailers through their links and buy something. They refund much of that commission to you. These programs are free and easy to use; once you sign up and go to retailers through the links on the rebate site you’re automatically credited a rebate for each purchase. You might get only 1 percent back shopping at Walmart, but it can go much higher. For example, Ebates.com has been rebating 5 to 10 percent (on double rebate days) for Backcountry.com purchases.

  • Choose the Right Credit Card

You probably use a cash-back credit card, but do you use the right one for each purchase? For example, my American Express business card gives me 5 percent back on purchases made at office supply stores, so I buy printer paper with that one. For eating out it offers only 1 percent, so I use a different card, one that gives me 3 percent cash back at restaurants. If you get confused, use a permanent marker to write “gas,” “grocery,” and such on the back of each card.

  • Use Cost Shredder

Another good tool for shopping online, Cost Shredder helps you combine savings strategies. You choose the retailer and it locates the best discounted gift cards, best cash-back website to go through, and a cash back credit card. Use all three to “stack” your savings (of course you can also do this yourself without the tool).

  • Save Big on Carpet Cleaning

As a former carpet cleaner I can tell you that during the slow winter season prices are very negotiable. Do your annual cleaning during slow times to get the best deal. And check out my list of 10 more ways to save on carpet cleaning.

  • Buy Your Car at the Right Time

Buy a car on the last day of the month, says the common advice. Sales people are struggling to meet monthly quotas or book one more commission, so they’re more likely to lower prices. But a report on MainStreet.com suggests a catch; when the last day falls on a weekend, the dealership’s “sales month” typically goes through the next Monday. So when the month ends on a Saturday or Sunday, wait until Monday (the 1st or 2nd of the new month) to negotiate your purchase.

  • Abandon Your Shopping Cart

I’ve discovered by accident (several times) that you can often get a deal by abandoning your online shopping cart. For example, I was buying a discounted Home Depot gift card for $94 (face value $100), and I had to leave before completing the order. The next day I had an email offering me $5 off to complete my purchase. Now I routinely abandon shopping carts and complete my purchases a day or two later — sometimes with a discount.

  • Subscribe and Wait

When you’re considering buying a product or service, first get on any related mailing list and wait a while. You might get a steep discount. For example, I signed up for Udemy.com and considered taking some classes that cost $49 to $199, but I was busy. After a week I started getting emails offering “Any Class for $15,” an eventually “Any Class for $10.” I’ve used this strategy numerous times.

  • Buy Car Insurance in December

A study done by InsuranceQuotes.com found you can pay much more for car insurance if you buy at the wrong time. Nationwide, the cheapest month for auto insurance is December, and the most expensive is March. Differences between lowest and highest-price months varied from state to state. The worst one is Hawaii, where car insurance costs 47.9% more in March than in December. The best month varies by state too, so use the handy tool on InsuranceQuotes.com to see when you should shop for a new policy.

  • Clean Your Headlights With Toothpaste

You can pay up to $60 to have the hazy headlights open your car “restored.” Or you can polish them with a rag and toothpaste, according to MotoringAbout.com. My results were okay — at least as good as a $10 cleaning product I’d previously tried.

  • Watch Price Cycles at Walmart

I’ve covered WalmartHYPERLINK "http://everywaytomakemoney.com/walmart-secrets/" savings hacks before, and I’ve reported on what happened when I used HYPERLINK "http://www.unusualwaystomakemoney.com/ad-match.html"Walmart’sHYPERLINK "http://www.unusualwaystomakemoney.com/ad-match.html" Ad-Match Guarantee. But here’s another trick: Buy when products are at the low end of their price-cycle. Walmart routinely changes prices on some items, raising the price long enough to call it a regular price, so they can then announce a “price cut” when they lower it. Once you identify these ups and downs you can stock up while prices are low, and wait out the high-price period. I do this for several favorite products, saving as much as 33 percent.

  • Clear Your Browser Cookies

One contributor on Quora.com suggests that online retailers may track you and adjust prices upwards depending on which websites or pages you’ve previously visited. He might be right, given the recent growth of dynamic pricing (instantly adjusting prices according to various factors). The solution is to clear your browser cookies before shopping on a website, so the retailer can’t know where you’ve been.

  • Shop Online Away From Home

Shopping-hack expert Mark Ellwood agrees you should clear your browser, but also notes that some retailers may use your IP address to determine your location and adjust prices accordingly. He suggests VPN to hide your IP address, or simply checking prices away from home before you make a large purchase online.

  • Get a Refund if the Amazon Price Drops

Amazon will often refund the difference in price if you buy something from them and the price drops in the next 30 days. They don’t advertise this, and you have to ask for it, but there are numerous reports of customers successfully getting a refund.

  • Save on Non-Resident Tuition

Attend college in another state and you might pay double or triple what residents pay. But you can get a big discount if the college participates in the Midwest Student Exchange Program, and if you live in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, or Wisconsin. The MSEP advises that you contact the Campus Administrator to ask how to apply as an MSEP student, and says to expect “savings between $500 and $5,000.”

  • Get Executive Level Customer Support

Have you ever spent thirty minutes on the phone with customer support and still not had your problem resolved? On LifeHacker.com, Alan Henry suggests you start with regular customer service, to establish an attempt to resolve your problem, but then quickly escalate to higher levels as necessary. Asking for a manager might work, but Henry also recommends using CallRed.com, which he says “lets you send a private, complete message directly to a company’s executive customer service team.”
