Survival Hacks Anyone Can Use-Hot Wiring a Car, Catch a Fish, Etc.

Catching fish in a survival situation is not as easy as you might think it is — even if you regularly fish for pleasure.

This piece from True Prepper runs down 13 technique to try. As this article points out, different methods will be more effective depending on the region and the type of fish you’re hunting. But keep in mind that a few of these options are not legal in certain places.

The article above also features a video showing you how to make a fish trap out of a very common household item. Check it out.

Obviously, I am not advocating criminal activity. But in a survival situation, there’s no telling what skills may come in handy. And one of those skills just might be how to hot-wire a car for a quick getaway.

Take a look at the post above from our friends over at Ask a Prepper. You’ll learn how to hot-wire a car in four steps, the types of vehicles on which this technique will work, the four tools you’ll need to do it and why it’s important to practice this skill before you need to use it in a survival situation.

The best part about this tutorial? It includes pictures with each step, so you can confidently master this skill in no time.

Create a Strong Cell Signal with this Unusual Hack

While doing the latest of online stunts – the bottle flipping challenge – Jordan Random happened across a useful phone hack. Many of history’s great inventions happened by unplanned chance, such as Velcro, X-rays, and the microwave. Jordan’s is right up there.

He poses the question: have you ever been stuck with 3G and without the 4G LTE icon? Why yes, I have. No one deserves to have choppy service considering the rates for some of these plans, yet sometimes we just accept it. But 3G, you are killing us softly with your unreliability. Delayed texts, dropped calls, broken up voices, and no internet is not what we want.

In this clip, Jordan shows us how to rig up one possible solution. An ordinary bottle of water became a cell phone signal booster by doing absolutely nothing but standing still.

The 5 Best Ways To Get Well Water Without Electricity

Water is the key to survival. At least 60 percent of the adult human body is made of water, and we can live no more than three days without it.

Since most modern water pumps use electricity to obtain well water, you may wonder how you would access well water in the event of a long-term power outage on the homestead. Here are five methods:

1. Manual pump – With a hand-operated pump, you can obtain five to 15 gallons of water per minute, depending on the make and model of the pump.

Manual pumps, which can be used with or without electivity, require quite a bit of effort, but they are an economical and easy way to get water during a blackout.  The story continues here:

You’ll Want to Keep this Emergency Can Opening Tip

Everyone should have a few survival skills up their sleeve just in case emergency strikes, even if it’s something you think you’ll never need. Weather disasters, wilderness mishaps, and sharknados can hit when you least expect, and you could be stuck without essentials.

With this in mind, should you ever find yourself without a can opener but with plenty of canned rations, the hack below could be useful. You might not even be in a survival scenario. You might have a broken opener, you could be visiting someone’s house who lacks this basic tool, or you just hate can openers (wink-wink lefties). Whatever the case, if you’re confident, have a little upper body strength, and a good dose of common sense, this should work fine.

How To Use Vicks VapoRub in 11 Unique Ways

A classic, Vicks VapoRub has been around for over a century and is a staple in many households. What began as a home remedy to combat colds, flu, and other common ails shot into popularity during the early 20th century. Bought by Proctor & Gamble in the ‘80s, the use of Vicks spread globally.

Made with a combination of menthol, camphor, and other ingredients such as oils of thyme, eucalyptus, and nutmeg, the salve cools and soothes at the same time. Individually, these items have specific uses including pain relief, itch reduction, anti-fungal, increasing circulation, and acne fighting.

In The Prepper’s Cookbook, Tess Pennington highlights key strategies for building an emergency pantry. This takes planning, so if you haven’t already done so, start today. Ideally, you want to store shelf stable foods that your family normally consumes, as well as find foods that are multi-dynamic and serve many purposes. These are the 25 foods she suggests that preppers should have in their pantries.

Have a Back-Up Plan For the Grocery Store

If you end up having to rush to the grocery store during an emergency, you should be prepared to employ a different strategy for finding food. If, when you arrive at the store, there are already a lot of people grabbing the low hanging fruit like canned foods, bread, etc., don’t join them. You’re probably only going to find the scraps that they haven’t gotten to yet. Instead, move immediately towards the food items that won’t disappear as quickly, and can substitute the foods that everyone is going to fight over first.

To employ this strategy properly, you only need one thing. Something to cook with that doesn’t require the grid, such as a camp stove with a few fuel canisters. You’ll need something like that, because many of the food items that disappear later in the game, tend to need some preparation.

These Four Emergency Food Alternatives Can Keep You Alive

So with that said, what kinds of foods should you go after when you arrive at a grocery store later than everyone else?

·         Instead of bread, go straight for the flour. Don’t worry if you can’t find any yeast. You can always make hardtack, tortillas or naan. You might also find that the sacks of dried rice and beans won’t disappear until after the canned foods go. When combined, these two make a complete protein and are perfect for emergency food meals. Keep cooking times in mind with the beans and go for small beans like navy or lentils.

·         If you find that the produce section is stripped bare, go to the supplement aisle instead. There you’ll find all of the vitamins and minerals that are normally found in fresh produce. Look for food based or whole food vitamins. You’ll also find protein powders that can at least partially substitute fresh meat. As well, look for seeds to sprout. Sprouts provide the highest amount of vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes of any of food per unit of calorie. Enzymes are essential because they heal the body, cleanse the body, prevent diseases, enhance the overall functioning of bodily organs, aids in digestion, and removes gas from the stomach.

·         If fresh meat or canned meat is gone from the shelves, a substitute for is dog food. Though this may disgust most people, desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s really cheap and packed with protein. The only downside, of course, is that pet food usually doesn’t face the same health standards as human food. If it can be helped, go for the wet food instead of the kibble. Though you’ll probably be fine eating any dog food for a couple of weeks, dry dog food isn’t as safe as wet food. Plus, the cans of wet food will be much more hydrating.

·         And finally, instead of trying to find butter, which will be one of the first food items to disappear, try looking for alternatives. Remember, you needfats in your diet. Healthy oils like coconut oil or avocado oil provide healthy nutrition and canI be used for cooking, added to coffee, oats, beverages, and other foods. In addition, one of the most nutrient dense foods that are often forgotten during emergency food planning is in the health aisle. Look for granola and nuts. Nuts are calorie dense and full of fiber to help you stay full longer. Due to the high protein count of this natural food, it can be an efficient meat replacement too. Look for non-salted nut varieties to keep you hydrated longer. It’s packed with calories and can go weeks without spoiling when it’s not refrigerated.  Read more about the ideal bug out meal plan here. Alternatively, if all the healthy oils and nuts have been taken, look for some lard. It’s sometimes labeled “manteca.” It will probably be overlooked, but has just as many calories as butter, and lasts a really long time.

Of course, many of these items aren’t the best tasting or the most healthy. They’re certainly not ideal. But then again, neither is being caught in a disaster without your food preps. If you arrive at the grocery store before everyone else, by all means, go after the good stuff. However, if you aren’t lucky enough to beat the crowds, now you know what kinds of foods you should grab first.

Be Prepared: 5 Strategies for Building a Budget-Friendly Emergency Kit

For some folks -- self-proclaimed “preppers” -- being ready for anything is an obsession. For others, it’s an afterthought.

It’s Hurricane Preparedness Week so this is an excellent opportunity to take stock of your situation now instead of waiting for the next natural disaster to make headlines.

Are you ready for an emergency? Preparing doesn’t have to be expensive.

How to Build Your Emergency Kit for Less

Sure, you could plunk down more than $200 on a one-size-fits-all emergency kit filled with stuff you probably won’t need.

Or, try the budget-friendly option: build your own customized, cost-effective kit. Here’s how.

1. Decide What You Need

First of all, know what you need.

The Red Cross suggests keeping these bare essentials on hand, mostly common-sense items: food, water, extra clothes and medicine.

You definitely need a stash of those. But what other goods make sense for where you live?

In my part of Florida, I can’t think of a disaster scenario that would necessitate the hand chain saw or rope in the $200 kit I mentioned, but maybe I’d feel differently if I had to deal with tornadoes or earthquakes, or if I lived in a wooded area.

Figure out what your kit needs and prioritize those items. And don’t get carried away -- you probably just need to be able to feed yourself for a week or so, not build a shelter on a desert island.

2. Prep for Free

Some of your preparation won’t cost you a dime. It’s all about gathering stuff you already have, like important documents, cell phone chargers, maps and spare emergency cash.

You can even stock your stash with free items -- Raven signs up for free samples online and uses some of the giveaways toward her emergency kit.

Instead of buying it by the flat, consider bottling your own water. Use bleach-purified, leftover two-liter bottles and treated municipal water. Just don’t use milk or juice cartons, which can harbor bacteria. Date your bottles and replace them every six months, and you’re good to go.

If you’ll need water for hygienic purposes, clean your bathtub, then fill it with cold water. It won’t be potable, but you can use it to flush toilets and keep yourself clean.

Don’t forget your protein! Beef jerky is a great survival snack -- but it isn’t cheap. You could dehydrate your own and save money and sodium content. Plus, you get to make your beef jerky the way you like. Check yard sales or Craigslist to find a dehydrator on the cheap.

Whenever you’re doing your own food prep, make sure you’re meticulous. Items undergoing long-term storage can get contaminated if they’re not perfectly sanitized and sealed -- and you don’t want to discover your food stash is useless when an emergency arises.

3. DIY to Save

In my area, hurricane shutters are important, but expensive.

The good news is you can make your own out of plywood or polycarbonate from Home Depot -- just make sure to factor in the cost of waste when you’re doing your comparison. You may not be able to find much use for raw material scraps once you cut out shutters.

4. Collect Cost-Effective Items

When you have to buy items, use coupons and your penny-hoarding knowledge to your advantage: Shop on the right day, use cash-back sites to earn rebates and use hacks to get the best deals at stores like CVS and Walmart.

When you pick up batteries, hydrogen peroxide, bleach and bandages, make sure to buy generic -- they’ll work just as well as the brand name stuff. Check out the dollar store for these items, and while you’re there, pick up some emergency entertainment: crayons and coloring books for the kids, and a pack of cards for adults.

You probably already know how much you can save by buying in bulk. Emergency rations of paper towels, toilet paper, canned goods, batteries and bottled water are a perfect opportunity to take advantage of those savings.

Finally, consider battery-free emergency additions, like wind-up flashlights and weather radios. If you’re going to be without electricity, you’ll definitely want a handheld cell phone charger, which you can keep charged and prepared beforehand.

5. Plan Ahead

One of the best ways to save money on disaster preparedness is to play the long game: Look for sales in your day-to-day life and stock up, way before your storm season approaches. Cans of tuna on BOGO? Put your “get-ones” into your stash.

The more you can avoid a last-minute disaster-prep rush, the better: Vendors do price gouge. Here in Florida, the price of canned goods and gallons of water goes up in June and falls steeply in December, after hurricane season ends.

In case you do need a last-minute item, include disaster prep in your savings budget. Set aside $20 a month or so, and consider it part of your emergency fund -- because that’s exactly what it is.

TIP:  Keep tampons in your first aid kit.  They are excellent for treating deep wounds as they are designed to absorb lots of moisture.  They will also expand to fill the shape of the wound.

Stay safe, Preppers -- and don’t forget your can opener!  And hats off to the Penny Hoarder for this piece.

Try these plans out for yourself and let me know what you think in the comments. Got more advice or another way to make these? Let me know! The more we help each other out today, the better prepared we can be tomorrow. Remember, Prepare Now, Survive Later.

Yours for a productive 2017,

Bruce ‘the Poor Man’
