You’ve got 2 hours until disaster strikes. Are you prepared?

If you’ve watched any apocalyptic movie ever[or the evening news this week regarding the storms approaching our east coast, you’re familiar with the grocery store scene. You know which one I’m talking about. Anxious dad rushes aisle by aisle gathering water and canned food for his family while everyone around him gradually turns from innocent customer to aggressive looter.

In this scenario, shelves are emptied quickly, and the store turns into a war zone. In the next scene, dad finds a store that has managed to keep control of their stock but has become absurdly greedy, inflating prices and heartlessly bartering family heirlooms in place of the now useless cash...

What is the most important survival item? I regularly see this question on forums and social media sites, both in text and meme form. One of the more common answers is: knowledge and/or your brain. This answer annoys me because it feels like a cop-out. Obviously, you need knowledge and skills to make it through a survival scenario. Which is why "a survival guide" is also a cop-out.

The real question is: If you could only have one survival item (other than knowledge), which one would you choose? One of the most common answers is: a good knife. I tend to agree, but there are other good answers such as: axe, gun, rope, tarp, matches, multitool, metal pot, sleeping bag, water purifier, etc. My favorite answer comes from Ray Mears, who suggested a satellite phone.

Anyway, when I came across this video by Sensible Prepper, I was expecting him to talk about one of the items I mentioned above. Instead, he talked about something I didn't expect. But when you think about it, it makes perfect sense...

The price of copper often gives us a clear indication of where the economy is heading, and it is now down 13 percent over the last six months.

When it looks like an economic crisis is coming, investors often flock to precious metals.  So it is very interesting to note that the price of gold is up more than 20 percent since May.

Look at “Megacities: Urban Future, the Emerging Complexity,” a Pentagon training video created by the Army for U.S. Special Operations Command.

The training video is only five minutes long, but it says a lot about the government’s mindset, the way its views the citizenry, and the so-called “problems” that the government must be prepared to address in the near future through the use of martial law.

USEFUL STUFF…

New Restrictions on Your Safe Deposit Box
On June 3rd, 2019, KeyBank of Cleveland, Ohio, sent out a letter to all of their customers entitled: “Important Change Of Terms For KeyBank Safe Deposit Box Clients”. In it, they outlined the following four changes:

Important Change of Terms:

  1. The Bank limited the aggregate value of each box, as well as their maximum liability to $25,000.

By starting with this point, it would lead one to believe that the letter was primarily addressing an insurance issue, but not so. The second point completely changed directions.

  1. “You can no longer store gold bullion or non-collectible domestic or foreign currency in your box.”

Why in the world is it their business to tell you that you can’t store perfectly legal cash and gold in your safe deposit box? It clearly is not an insurance issue, since point #1 was to deny liability for any value over $25,000. It’s up to the customer to secure or not secure separate insurance for their valuables. Without question the bank is targeting cash and gold bullion specifically.

  1. KeyBank has the right to drill and/or enter your box “to ensure your box and everything inside is kept secure.”
  2. “The Bank has the right to move boxes and/or contents to a new location without any liability...”

These are profoundly intrusive, restrictive, and outrageous changes to the privacy of safe deposit boxes. The question that we must ask ourselves is why? And why now? Keep in mind that KeyBank is a very large bank:

  • $138 Billion in Assets
  • Over 1100 Branches
  • Located in 15 States
  • Well over 18,000 Employees

Here are my ideas for new bill [s] to improve government

>Since term limits never seems to gain any traction perhaps we should entertain the idea of zero pay for elected officials after their third term in office…give them their office, expenses, health insurance while in office and a living allowance only=much like our Founding Fathers and see how many decide to remain in office.

>Perhaps we need to resurrect a new version of ‘war’ bonds, perhaps calling them “government bailout bonds” to help pay off our national debt and/or to help pay for our massive deficits and proposed new spending projects since fewer foreign nations are buying our debt!

>An idea I've suggested before:  Eliminate ALL city/state & Federal taxes on the 1st $25K of income for all people. 41% of citizens pay no Federal tax, many city/state taxes are killers for many. Tax laws that encourage more US manufacturing/jobs & elimination of red tape would help too.

Paracord is both lightweight and strong. It weighs less and takes up less room than heavy-duty ropes, and can be woven together to create a stronger rope that is rot proof and sturdy. When the inner cords are taken apart, its uses multiply. Paracord has a bearing weight of 550 pounds. It was designed to stretch under a load and will stretch over time. There are many uses for this “survival rope,” but here are the ten most practical ways to use your paracord in the wilderness.

Rosefield is a classic traditional cabin, which can be built for less than $6,000. The cabin is open plan, which has the advantage of making it far easier, cheaper and quicker to build than more intricate cabins with separate rooms. This particular plan also includes a detailed cabin assembly diagram and step-by-step instructions which includes a foundation guide.  [282sf’]

How to make a secret door/book case

A number of years ago I owned an old mansion with 11 bedrooms and eight baths and a full basement with several secret rooms…we also had an even more secret room near the attic for which I used for ‘special’ projects…lots of fun and it would have reminded many of the classic Stephen King movie, “The Shining.”

My good friends recently renovated their attic and were able to close off some of the “unusable” space into a secret room. My friend has wanted to have a secret room his entire life, and with their first child on his way soon, the recent renovation was the perfect way to make it happen. The whole idea is for his son, in about four years, to find a secret playroom in his house!

The renovation left an opening for me to build the bookcase in, framed out simply as a short door frame. Even though the walls are new construction, the floor and ceiling have been around since the 1920’s. Old construction adds a whole lot of variables to making built in cabinetry, and I definitely ran into lots of hurdles because of it.  Learn more here:

Rooftop Farming Kits

This Urban Farmers Modular System Helps Anyone Create Their Own Operation

If you've ever wanted to create a garden on your roof, this rooftop farming kit lets you transform essentially any bit of spare roof space into a full-on operation. Available from Urban Farmers, the UF Farm is a commercial scale system complete with greenhouses and custom shipping containers.

The modular kit could be used by anyone with an interest in growing food, whether it be a restaurant, grocery store or educational institution. The rooftop farming operation can be installed on just about any kind of roof, making it very versatile and offers the added benefit of the farmers not having to start from scratch. The aquaponics system can support both fish and plants, where the fish fertilize the plants and the plants filter the fishes' water.

The Shroombox by Fungaea kit will make it easy for even the gardening adverse to get their hands dirty with urban farming.

The Shroombox by Fungaea kit is easy to go and ready upon arrival, producing fresh oyster mushrooms in under two weeks, and the product boasts eco-friendly packaging in the form of a 100% recyclable inner bag and an outer box made from locally sourced recycled coffee grounds.

In addition to oyster mushrooms, Fungaea also offers organic sprout kits. The Shroombox by Fungaea is a great introduction to the growing locavore movement and could serve as important inspiration in starting a full, farm-fresh urban garden at home.

Edie Shares Her Best Shave Ever

This time of year, my legs are really dry, so shaving is always hard. I read that a 50/50 mix of glycerin and water in a spray bottle was good for dry skin. For extra moisturizing, I add a few drops of jojoba oil to the bottle. I ran out of shave cream and decided to give my mixture a try. It worked great! Shaving was painless, and my skin felt smooth as silk after. I'll never buy shave cream again!

Easy, Economical, Ecological Distillation…practical knowledge for the Retro Guy

Homemade hootch, a tradition which predates governments and something every retro guy should know…

Amateur chemistry can be educational, fun and rewarding; however, it can be intimidating to begin, especially with the cost of professional laboratory equipment. Fortunately, this is amateur chemistry, and we can use amateur equipment, a process which not only saves you money but also helps you to understand what's going on! In this Instructable I'll demonstrate how I built a distillation apparatus for only a few dollars.

This device is useful for a wide range of hobbyists and makers - in addition to amateur chemists, their users include brewers, survivalists, herbalists, and more. Also, I typically make a point of using new material or retail-supplied material as little as possible and have a strong tendency to blur the line between thriftiness and cheapness. Though it can be difficult at times, this also helps me build independence from prefabricated materials and is an avenue through which I can exercise creativity in problem-solving.

Motivation

You probably already know why you want to build a distillation apparatus. If not, I can certainly give you a few:

  • The application common to all my fellow hobbyists and DIYers is purifying water, since we all use water numerous times daily. If you need to purify water and remove contaminants from it, you could do so by distillation. This might be done for drinking or use in a humidifier.
  • Most hobbyists who construct devices for distillation, however, are doing so with alcohol in mind. I don't see any reason why the apparatus I built wouldn't work for that purpose, but I didn't build it with that in mind. If you do want to distill alcohol, check whether or not it's legal where you are and be sure it won't cause your distillation tube to degrade - many companies post free solvent/plastic compatibility charts like this one online.
  • But why do I want to build a distillation apparatus? Amateur chemists often find commercial suppliers for reagents in everything from garden to automotive supply stores, and sometimes these finds require concentration, purification, or separation. In my case, I've been interested for a while in polymers and I'd love to make my own - I know of plastics made from borax and glue, milk (its protein casein), corn starch, agar, and gelatin Ethylene glycol is readily available as antifreeze, but other chemicals are added - I want to isolate ethylene glycol because of its dual hydroxyl groups, which I'm hoping will be useful in polymerization.
  • I mentioned before that herbalists might use distillation because essential oils can be distilled to concentrate them. As with brewing, I'm not involved with any of the details of essential oils, so it's your responsibility to double-check safety and legality here.

Resources you can use and share…

Learn anything. Online learning used to be a novelty. Then it started becoming mainstream and comprehensive. Today, it is exploding beyond belief. Here is a site that offers 100 other sites that teach just about anything you could ever want to know. And the crazy-great Khan Academy isn’t even listed. It boggles the mind to consider that there was a time when government imagined that it could control what we learn.

Remit money cheaper. Banks and wiring companies are charging too much money for people to send money home — mainly to poor countries. But remittances are about to get a lot cheaper. Companies like TransferWise, Moni Technologies, and WorldRemit are competing, paradoxically, to keep more money in the hands of people in the developing world.

Partake in the Creative Commons. Not every government imposition on market institutions allows for a way out. But in the case of copyright — a regulatory intervention that has become a major source of mischief in the digital age — Creative Commons is the answer that freedom-lovers can embrace. FEE founder Leonard Read pioneered this approach in the late 1940s, long before people even questioned copyright. FEE in 2014 has gone all the way by putting all its content in the commons with no restrictions. Goodbye censors.

etGems. Instant messaging is still the thing, but what if it lived on a distributed network with no central control that also allowed instant currency exchanges at near-zero cost? That’s what going on at GetGems. It’s some pretty edgy stuff, but remember: these are the early days of such innovations. No one can prevent us from talking to each other -- or exchanging with each other -- in whatever way we choose. (See also other forms of crypto-texting.)
