As the World Burns

We have a very short window of relative stability in the United States, yet most Americans don't seem too concerned about our long-term problems.  Most have their heads buried in the sand or have faith that our "leaders" will be able to find a way to muddle through whatever challenges are ahead…

In the 25 years that I have been writing about politics and economics, I have never seen a more dangerous confluence of circumstances or such a degree of complacency among citizens.

Americans are dangerously ignorant about their own history and world affairs.  Many are thoroughly enamored with mundane, the trite and the superficial.  A look at what passed for entertainment today indicates how far we’ve fallen.  Our appetite for crap entertainment, pop culture, sports and celebrity nonsense is insatiable and growing.

Most of us are closed off to new ideas, subjects and other information through artificially created filter bubbles via search engines such as Google.  Others have called this the closing of the American mind… [What the internet is hiding from you - users get less exposure to conflicting viewpoints and are isolated intellectually in their own informational bubble] We know, for instance, that only 4% of Americans are active news consumers, down 12% from just a few years ago.**

Growing numbers don’t want to face reality and are truly ignorant about the world around them.  Most of them, like our leaders, are fiddling while our nation burns.

Of course, politicians who have been feeding at the public trough for life enjoy this knowing stupid people are easier to control and fewer of them vote or become involved in politics.

Personally, I’ve had it with so many years of incompetent and mediocre leaders at all levels of government.  It has led to a mind numbing state of affairs…

2015 Store Closing Roundup - Office Depot, Radio Shack, Barnes & Noble

The mainstream media is constantly telling us about the "employment recovery" that is happening in the United States, but the truth is that it is just an illusion.

If you listen and believe the news reports and government concocted statistics, yes it is better.  If you are in MI, the economy is booming…cars are selling, restaurants are booming, people are attending sporting events in record numbers.

However, the shadow stats aren’t as rosy and as history has shown for consumers, they’ll the blow any extra money they get their hands on just like a drunk politicians.

The truth isn’t as sparkling.  Just like our escalating national debt, consumers are again piling debt onto their credit cards.

As a nation, we buy far more from the rest of the world than they buy from us.  In other words, we perpetually consume far more wealth than we produce.  This is a recipe for national economic suicide.  Our current account balance soared to obscene levels just prior to the last recession, and now we have almost gotten back to those levels...

Many are spending like it is 1999 as the old song goes and now reports are surfacing that many college kids and others are selling their food stamp dollars or exchanging them for drugs and alcohol.

The wealthy are hoarding cash and precious metals right now.  In fact, one British news report stated that sales of gold bars to wealthy customers are up 243 percent so far this year.   The stock market here and in Canada has dropped considerably this month…reminds me of the beginning of the big crash of 2008-09!  Is anyone paying attention?  Not really.

U.S. Retail Chain Store Closing Plans and Total Numbers - U.S. and Global

What follows is a complete roundup of U.S. retail chain store closing plans, and total numbers of store closings that retail chains have announced will take place in the U.S. and globally.  Information for this 2015 Store Closing List was obtained from reports made available to the general public through news reports, corporate documents, and company press releases, and will be compiled and aggregated as new information is released throughout 2015.

Here’s why our economy adds so few living wage jobs while discouraging business startups…

We Can’t Afford the $2 Trillion Price Tag of Government Regulations

In recent years regulations have also been used to promote social policies’

The federal government takes its toll in taxes but there are insidious and intrusive hidden regulatory costs that eat into our household budgets to an extent that is equal to or greater than what we pay in taxes, according to Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens.

“Regulations are supposed to make things better and safer, but in recent years they have also been used to promote social policies such as green energy.  Why else would federal regulators create onerous rules, for example, that inhibit the use of the nation’s vast fossil fuel resources?”

The EPA would decimate the nation’s coal industry with restrictive carbon emission regulations despite the fact that technology exists to allow for the clean use of coal to generate electricity.

“Bear in mind that coal generates about 41 percent of our electricity and is our cheapest source of power.  Because American coal is so plentiful and inexpensive, it can be construed that it is a hindrance to the development of solar and wind power,” Weber pointed out.

He noted that rules governing such things as the operations of public transportation and financial markets, the sale of pharmaceuticals, workplace safety, drinking water, etc. have a practical role to play in our society.  But, he added, “when the government uses its regulatory authority to further social goals without so much as a debate on the issues and a Congressional vote, it is downright wrong-headed.  Not to mention the costs it imposes on American households.”

The Competitive Enterprise Institute estimated that in 2013 the cost of complying with federal regulations amounted to nearly $15,000 for the average U.S. household.  Many of the rules were, of course, necessary and beneficial, but the CEI pointed out that in recent years the government has been imposing as many 3,500 regulations per annum.

“It begs the question: are all those new rules really essential in the midst of an excruciatingly slow economic recovery?”

“The issue of government regulatory authority run-amok is not a political issue.  It’s an American issue that requires bi-partisan attention because we simply can’t afford the nearly $2 trillion dollar price tag,” Weber concluded.

Obama Added Over $1 Trillion in Red Ink in Fiscal 2014

The federal government’s fiscal year ended last week, on September 30.  The accounting is dismal.  Even though 2014 has been a booming year in the economy, with rapidly rising (+8.5%) tax collections, the total federal debt increased by $1.077 trillion to reach $17.823 trillion.  The reported federal deficit for the year was “only” $583 billion, but that’s because the government ignores various increases in debt.  If you look at the total federal deficit between September 30 in 2013 and 2014, the increase was $1.077 trillion.  In the last six years, President Obama has added more debt than any other President in history, almost doubling the cumulative total, from $9 trillion to almost $18 trillion.

Most people are stupid, especially when they’re panicked.  This can easily be evidenced by the many sheeple still among us. They’re everywhere. Worse, they’re really going to be EVERYWHERE during an emergency…

If you’re not planning ahead, you’re already in trouble…I’m giving this library away…get it now while you still can!

Declaring Your Independence, Preserving Freedom

Self-reliance is the only road to true freedom, and being one's own person is its ultimate reward.

-Patricia Sampson

Declaring Your Independence from Government: My annual 4th of July message about incompetence, dishonesty & preserving your independence.

What are you doing to help preserve freedom?

Our founders intended to create a society where freedom and liberty would be maximized, but that is not what America looks like today.  Instead, we live in a country that literally has millions of laws which are strangling economic growth and turning millions of people into criminals…Our government in many cases, has become the enemy of the people!

It seems to me that time is growing short. America has a toxic combination of corrupt politicians who have been in office too long and powerful Wall Street and other special interests which are ruining our nation.

In our nation right now, there are powerful institutions actively fighting to keep us all enslaved. Those include the government itself, the mainstream media and special interests on Wall Street or as I call it, the Washington-Wall Street Cartel.  Yes, they are just like drug cartels.

Everyone wants the opportunity for economic prosperity in a fair and just system where hard work and innovation is rewarded. Everybody is tired of the lies and oppression of corrupt politicians, evil corporations and the lying news media

As tyrants become more bold, so too must the citizenry.

Americans are easily bamboozled by the armies of professional PR staff politicians use to lie to the American public.  Too many seem blind to our demise.

America is quickly splitting into two distinctly different groups of people: Those that live off a government guarantee, like government workers, greedy bankers and welfare recipients...and those who pay for it.

Too many of our cities are on the verge of collapse.  This is in large part because of poor and dishonest political leadership.  Corruption and democratic rule for 50 years in Detroit, for example, we find nearly half the citizens cannot afford running water. In an area with the largest body of fresh water on the planet, it has some of the highest water rates in the nation.  Michigan’s governor is helping to bail out government worker pensions from that city but hasn’t lifted a finger to remedy the water problem.

Nearly 10,000 city residents received water shutoff notices from the city and I find it sad that the United Nations is now publicly blasting the water situation in Michigan as a human rights violation.

(1) In New York, 1 in 6 families faces starvation. (2) The collapse of America into third-world conditions is happening so rapidly and unexpectedly that the United Nations may soon be called in to "rescue" city-dwellers. (3) Since 2001, America has suffered a loss of 56,000 manufacturing facilities (4), and southern towns are now being literally overrun by such a huge wave of undocumented immigrants that the Department of Homeland Security has declared a Level Four Alert.

An estimated 750,000 to nearly 1 million Americans are living off-the-grid. Interest in self-reliance is growing around the country in order to lessen — and if possible, cut — all dependences on the government and corporations, which have become bloated and increasingly more controlling.

Off-the-grid living doesn’t mean living in the dark ages ... it’s about being self-reliant. It’s about producing your own power, your own water system and septic. A few companies are now specializing in “green” modular homes that come with solar panels and complete battery back-up power in addition to water collection systems. They sell for around $80,000. The initial market was low-cost housing for third-world countries. But now, wealth Americans who worry about the state of U.S. affairs see these turnkey self-reliance solutions as a way to gain peace of mind.

America, by almost every measure, is declining…culturally, politically and economically.  Our freedoms and privacy are shrinking, and every week brings new law enforcement abuses to light.  Many feel that America is losing its identity and its middle class.

True to form, governments and corporations dislike any form of empowerment that allows us to break free of their control. A self-sustaining lifestyle cuts them out. It allows us to develop communities of like-minded folks who crave the hard work and freedom of taking care of themselves.

Carl Sagan, an American scientist and Ivy League professor said it best:

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

The Obama white House has used the Espionage Act against more whistleblowers and journalists and spied upon more journalists than any other President in history…

To me, knowing how to be self-reliant in a natural way is more important now than ever because, in the event of a shock to national or global supply chains, we’ll want to have peace of mind.

Americans are losing confidence in all three branches of the Federal government. Fewer than one in 10 citizens have faith in Congress, just 29 percent express confidence in the President and only 30 percent feel the Supreme Court is doing a good job.

The numbers, according to the Gallup polling agency, indicate historical lows in American confidence for both Congress and the Supreme Court, along with the lowest Presidential approval since Barack Obama took office.

We don’t need another election, We need another Revolution

This has become my battle cry for nearly 20 years and I get mighty angry when I see how fat, dumb and apathetic my fellow citizens have become.  Are you doing anything to preserve our heritage against public officials who seem hell bent on destroying our freedom?

The Poor Man offers some of the best self-sustaining, self reliance, how to be politically savvy and independent resources and holistic lifestyle solutions.  The majority of these resources are provided to you FREE of charge.  Each week our blog brings more of these resources to light.  Take advantage and subscribe using feedburner or one of our social networks!

I also recommend watching segments of Bill Moyers…one of the few journalists who actually interviews people who are informed and critical of the never-ending BS which spews forth from the district of corruption…

I don’t know about you, but I am terribly tired of living in a land where intolerance in the supposed name of tolerance has become the rule and where government, at all levels, ignore the rule of law.

Our forefathers fought against a king whose taxes and other rules they could not abide by.  Today, the number of anti-freedom laws we have would choke most of those Patriots!

I believe we’re at a point for a major national reset in this country…it could go either way.  A complete meltdown initiated by the government including a declaration of martial law…OR, we could find that enough citizens have awakened to finally take action and stop reelecting the fools which have steered a nasty course for our nation.

Gallup Poll: Satisfaction With Their Freedoms Has Record Drop Among Americans

We have long discussed the erosion of civil liberties in the United States, including the attacks on privacy and other rights by the Obama Administration. It appears that we are not alone in those concerns. A new Gallup poll shows a record drop in the satisfaction of Americans over their freedoms.

Where Have all the Protesters Gone?

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in time of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. - Dante Alighieri

Whatever happened to the protest generation?

The Tree of Liberty has been asking “What have you done for me lately?”

PBS aired a segment about the protest folk singers of the 60s this week…Guthrie, Baez, Dylan, Ochs and many others who wrote and sang songs about social ills and anti-war tunes.  As a young teen I listened to these songs on my transistor radio with its convenient ear plug so my parents could not hear that I was still awake.

I was a voracious reader at an early age too and read every single book from our local library which pertained to our Founding Fathers.  The ideals they stood for provided me with a lasting foundation and belief in a small government which didn’t intrude on the rights of its people.  Thomas Jefferson and others taught me our rights were not granted to us by government.  Indeed, it was the other way around, We the People granted rights to government.

Somewhere along the line that thinking got reversed, politicians now see themselves as the master, not the servant. We conducted a revolution against unfair taxes and because:  He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance."

As most would agree, Washington and state governments have repeated the King’s cycle of too many taxes and too many bureaucrats which are strangling the lifeblood out of our nation, threatening our economic vitality while decimating the rights of citizens.  The “king” has been militarizing its police and destroying privacy and freedom through its so-called Patriot Act.

So whatever happened to all those protestors of the 60s and 70s?  Our generation was supposed to make a difference!

Outside a Small Circle of Friends

Smoking marijuana is more fun than drinking beer,
But a friend of ours was captured and they gave him thirty years
Maybe we should raise our voices, ask somebody why
But demonstrations are a drag, besides we're much too high
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

--Phil Ochs, Pleasures of the Harbor album, often called the Apathy song

While many of us have been asleep at the wheel, our nation has been hijacked by a greedy ruthless political class which has little regard for freedom, or our national welfare.

Starts when you’re always afraid, the man comes and take you away – Buffalo Springfield “For What it’s Worth.”

Many of us became yuppies, corporate drones, some might say we lost our way or that we got too old, fat and lazy to do anymore protesting.  After all, it is still a fact that most people don’t care about much of anything outside their small circle of friends.

So what have you done lately to protect and promote freedom?  It is the civic duty of every American to NOT support anti-freedom laws and acts such as the so-called Patriot Act.  Our readers know one of my mantras is just because something is a law does not make it right, moral or ethical.

"There are not enough jails, not enough policemen, not enough courts
to enforce a law not supported by the people."

-- Hubert H. Humphrey

Here are some ways you can fight injustice:

·        Learn about Jury Nullification

·        Stop campaign contributions to the two dysfunctional parties destroying our nation

·        Stop reelecting ineffective politicians-anyone who has been in office since before the internet needs to be retired.

·        Learn the art of SHUNNING – use it on local politicos, bureaucrats and law enforcement officials who are unethical and think about launching recall efforts to rid the system of these bottom feeding parasites.

·        Start your own local action groups to share this information.

“Why should anyone trust a government that has condoned torture, spied on at least 35 world leaders, supports indefinite detention, places bugs in thousands of computers all over the world, kills innocent people with drone attacks, promotes the post office to log mail for law enforcement agencies and arbitrarily authorizes targeted assassinations? Or, for that matter, a president that instituted the Insider Threat Program, which was designed to get government employees to spy on each other and ‘turn themselves and others in for failing to report breaches…’” — Professor Henry Giroux

A democracy is only as good as those who actively participate in it and work toward getting rid of arrogant politicians and others who have forgotten who they are supposed to serve.  I always thought it was our job to save the world.

Aside from the Wall Street One Percenters, which were heartily attacked by the press...

The War on the Middle Class-Will You Be Next?

A confidential briefing

Will you be next?

The American people have been sold out…Learn how to fight back!

The War on the Middle Class: How the Washington-Wall Street Cartel is Destroying America

Has the middle class squeeze made you feel ‘left behind’?

If so, you’re not alone. Since 2008 we’ve lost more than 10% of our middle class!  Will you be next?

The slow, steady death of the middle class, the U.S. consumer began in the 1970s when governments at all levels thought we were bottomless pits of cash.

Median household income has declined for five years in a row, but all of our bills just keep going up.

For example, 32 million Americans were on food stamps when Barack Obama took office, and subsequently that number shot up to about 47 million. Are you next?

If we were going to have an “economic recovery”, it should have happened by now.

Unfortunately, it has not materialized, and another downturn is coming.

Back in 2008, 53 percent of all Americans considered themselves to be “middle class”.

In 2014, only 44 percent of all Americans still consider themselves to be “middle class“.

You Don’t Have to Feel Poorer

The government directed decline in your purchasing power and retirement dollars has been orchestrated and millions of average people are seeing their life’s work frittered away while Fortune 500 CEOs continue to rake in fortunes.

At no other time in history has there been such an income gap between the top one percent and the rest of the nation…that explains why we have more people on food stamps than at any other time history.

Our government always has money to bail out Wall Street or for foreign welfare but it can’t even fix our infrastructure or stop job losses.

Read what others are saying:

"The Poor Man represents the real America, the one which stands for traditional values, fiscal responsibility and financial security for those who apply themselves.
