Are you prepared?

We urge readers to rethink the entire process of working for a living and preserving purchasing power: “Instead of converting labor into money, money into investments, investments back into money and money into real goods once again, convert your surplus earnings directly into real goods. Simply stated, invest your savings in those real things that you will be consuming in the future. Save only real wealth.”

The Alpha Strategy entailed three levels…

1. Invest in production. If it’s something you need to make a living — education, a skill set, tools — this takes priority over anything else.

2. Save consumables. This is the stuff you use on a day-to-day basis — razor blades, pasta, tires — if you use it up and it has a decent shelf life, it falls under Level 2.

3. Save real money. If after Level 2 you still have savings left, then you can put it into precious metals and other tangible assets.

Note well: The Alpha Strategy is not a “prepper” or “survivalist” plan for the end of civilization as we know it. You will not — indeed, should not — load up on No. 10 cans of Mountain House freeze-dried meals.

“While you may choose to put away freeze-dried foods,” Pugsley wrote, “remember that they do not fall within the definition of good savings assets… The Alpha Strategy is a means to protect purchasing power, and is not intended to be a means to defend against social collapse.”

Although under present circumstances in 2021, it can’t hurt. Heh…

The best part about the Alpha Strategy is you can start with any amount of capital. “If you have only $100, you can protect it completely against inflation and all investment risks by simply buying things now that you know you will have to buy next week, next month or next year. If you have $1,000 or $10,000, the same thing holds true.”

Better yet, all your “gains” are tax-free.

More about Level 1: “The greater the investment you make in education and tools, the more you will produce and the higher your income and standard of living will be,” Pugsley wrote in The Alpha Strategy.

By education, he was careful not to specify a college degree. For purposes of the Alpha Strategy, education means “the acquisition of knowledge that will enable you to produce a product or service that will be in demand by others.” Or it might entail learning a second trade, in case your current skill set becomes obsolete.

Meanwhile, think of the tools you use to earn your living. “Whether you are an accountant whose only tools are a calculator, an accounting pad and a pencil; a mechanic who uses wrenches, drills and hammers; or a manufacturer who needs warehouses, lathes, presses and automatic screw machines, the principle is the same.”

OK, the accountant of 1980 undoubtedly had to spend money on ever-increasing amounts of computer power in the decades since, but you get the idea: If it’s something that won’t go out of date quickly, stock up.

On to Level 2: “Once you have invested as much of your available capital as you can in education, tools, supplies and facilities for production, the next logical place to put your savings is into those goods that you and your family will consume in future years,” Pugsley wrote.

Whether it’s toothpaste, light bulbs or antifreeze, goods that have a long shelf life and won’t become obsolete before you use them are all fair game for the Alpha Strategy.

It might sound daunting at first. But it’s much easier to accomplish now than when The Alpha Strategy was published. Then, Pugsley had several pages of advice about how to dicker with retailers to get bulk discounts and how to seek out wholesale suppliers. In the age of the internet and wholesale clubs like Costco and Sam’s, you don’t need to resort to such measures.

So… let’s run down a shopping list.

Food: “Foods are the No. 1 consumption item for most of us,” Pugsley wrote, “but because of their perishable nature, they must be carefully selected.” So forget about meat and produce. Even with a freezer, “the storage cost is high relative to other goods.” Consider instead…

Canned goods: Shelf life varies, but figure on using them up within 18 months. Even a one-year supply will insulate you against rising prices

Sugars: The shelf life of sugar is just on this side of forever. “Jams, jellies and other preserves will last indefinitely, as will most fruits that are packed in sugar syrups.” Honey and molasses will keep for years; even if they harden, just heat and stir

Grains and legumes: Wheat, rice, peas and beans will all last for 10 years or longer. Beware: If you grind the wheat into flour, that shelf life turns into mere months

Tea: A “near perfect” savings asset, Pugsley said. Bulk buying gives you significant savings, and tea takes up little space and suffers little if any loss of quality over time

Pasta: It can keep for five years or longer.

Coffee? At the time Pugsley wrote the book, debate raged over its shelf life. A casual search of the internet today reveals that’s still the case. You might want to experiment.

Health and beauty aids: “Items such as deodorant, shampoo and toothpaste will keep indefinitely when stored in a cool, dry place, and mouthwash will keep up to three years under these same conditions… Don’t forget razor blades, toothbrushes, sanitary napkins, combs, brushes and first-aid supplies.”

Cleaning supplies: Depending on their chemical makeup, not all detergents will last indefinitely. “The best Alpha items in the cleaning equipment category are brushes, brooms, mops, vacuum bags, pot scrubbers, trash bags, compactor bags, sponges and scouring pads.”

Paper products: Yes, they last forever as long as they’re not exposed to light, bugs or mice. But there’s a catch: “The biggest drawback to some of these goods is their low cost per cubic foot, as this makes them costly to store.” More about this shortly…

Clothing: Yes, fashions change. But men in particular could easily load up on 10 or 20 years’ worth of socks, underwear and T-shirts.

Automotive: “Storage space and styling taken into account,” Pugsley wrote, “you may decide to buy an extra new car this year and put it up on blocks.” Five years on, you might be very satisfied with the purchase. If that’s too out there, consider stockpiling replacement parts, motor oil and tires.

Around the house: Here too, spare parts for furnaces, water heaters and such might be useful. At the very least, consider small hardware items and garden supplies.

Wine: Pugsley was an oenophile, and he waxed eloquent about wine storage for four pages. “The investment in a substantial personal wine cellar,” he wrote, “offers the best of everything: low risk, protection against inflation, no taxes on the gain and an interesting and pleasurable avocation — in other words, it is the perfect asset for saving.”

Don’t take this up without some basic knowledge about which wines store well and which don’t.

Also beware the temptation to deplete your stash faster than you expect: “My first adventure into stockpiling,” Pugsley wrote, “came when I bought what I thought would be a two–three-year supply of wine. The convenience of having it on hand each time we had a nice meal turned it into a one-year supply.” Which defeats the purpose of keeping your cost of living low…

Most hard liquor, by the way, can last 10 years or more if you store it properly. Beer? Forget it.

Ah, but where do you keep everything? And how much room do you need in the first place?

“The amount of room you need,” Pugsley wrote, “will depend on the amount of money you have to invest and the type of goods you decide to stockpile.”

A helpful tool is to figure the cost of an item relative to the amount of space it takes up, the value per cubic foot. This is why we encouraged you at the start of today’s 5 to stock up on razor blades — a large supply takes up little space — so you wouldn’t find the idea intimidating!

At 1980 prices, Pugsley reckoned the average value per cubic foot of the goods you’d store would be $25. Thus, a $10,000 stockpile would require 400 cubic feet of space. “It could be kept in a space 4 feet deep by 7 feet high by 14 feet long, or roughly a 4-foot-deep storage area built along the wall of your garage.” That said, a garage might not be the ideal choice, he said: You want a space that’s cool, dark and dry.

Don’t forget to think about insurance if loss of the goods would affect your standard of living for the worse.

Then you get to Level 3 — saving real money.

Still have some cash left after building up your stash? “You are ready to explore the third level of the strategy: the accumulation of real goods that you can eventually sell or exchange.”

Pugsley’s preferred vehicles were raw commodities. Granted, pork bellies and barrels of oil are problematic… so he leaned mostly toward metals, and not only the precious variety. “Copper, zinc, lead, tin, nickel and aluminum are all metals that can be stockpiled, are universally used and can be expected to be in demand for centuries to come.”

Forty years later, his words take on new relevance as copper and nickel will be cornerstones to a “greener” economy — one that will surely be more expensive to live in.

Late in his life — he died in 2011 at age 77 — Mr. Pugsley posted a free PDF file of The Alpha Strategy on his website. And while his site is long gone, fans dutifully reposted the PDF. Here’s a link.

If you prefer a real book in your hands, prepare to shell out. A few years ago, used copies abounded on Amazon and used-book sites — often for a penny plus shipping. Now you’re lucky to find a copy for under $50.

And yet it might be worth it: Only the real book contains an appendix listing the shelf lives of literally hundreds of consumer goods.

 NOTE: Given how fast inflation is costing you with food; an investment in food is money in the bank!

 Four steps to take after you realize preparedness is for you

During the Great Depression, the vast majority of American citizens were rural, farm-oriented people with survival skills far beyond the modern American.

"Prepping" in those days was ingrained in our society, rather than marginalized and labeled "fringe." Today, the numbers are reversed, with a dwindling number of farm-experienced Americans and a vast wasteland of urban and suburban citizens — many with few, if any, skill sets that would benefit them in a time of societal breakdown.

During the Great Depression, millions of people died of starvation and general poverty, despite the incredible number of people with rural survival knowledge. Today, an incredible subsection of Americans do not know how to feed themselves; they do not know how to hunt; they do not know how to grow crops; they do not know how to repair any necessary items used for subsistence; they do not know how to build anything useful; they do not know how to shoot; they do not know how to defend themselves; they don't even know how to cook a pot of rice properly.

I have often closed my letters to you with a simple reminder to store water, food, guns, ammo and gold, without mentioning the above deficiencies in society in general. Yet, inevitably, that remark will spark a rejoinder or emails pointing out the folly of preparedness.

Some people just don't get it, and apparently, no amount of "preaching" to them on the subject will get through. Boy Scouts, apparently, they aren't. For them, either normalcy bias — the belief that things will always be just like they are — or the belief that society is too "advanced" for anything to go wrong is just too tough to overcome.

Perhaps now, after the Coronavirus casedemic frenzy that locked down the entire country, they begin to understand that being a prepper does not mean you believe a "zombie apocalypse" is imminent. It just means that you are preparing for whatever might come along: be it a vehicle breakdown in a remote location, a storm that knocks out power for several days or something much more catastrophic.

I used to use the example of New Orleans after Katrina to provide an example of how quickly society can break down into anarchy once basic services are lost.

But one need look no further than the effects and panic during the coronavirus scare.

What's foolish about having a backup survival plan and enough water, food and medical supplies — and the means to protect them — to get you through at least a month in a situation in which you are on your own?

Nothing, considering the original "orders" coming from government were to lock down everything for a month.

Those in New Orleans who were unprepared for the chaos found themselves dependent on nonexistent or ineffectual government services. Many died or suffered greatly as a result.

Those among the 17 million who lost their jobs immediately following the onset of the coronavirus pandemic found themselves lining up, for miles, trying to get free food at locations around the country, from California to Pittsburgh.

I believe the immense amount of borrowing by the Federal Reserve will cause hyperinflation. It is unclear exactly how that is going to affect basic services (including those we depend upon government to provide), plus the banking system and the supply chain of food and other goods to stores. I know we have historical precedent to study; and I'm certain that when it happens, there is going to be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

I believe that when that occurs, a barter system will develop in which tradable commodities along with gold and silver become the monetary system, if even for a short time. So-called "junk silver" (pre-1965 silver coins) could easily become the currency of choice. The coins look like the money we see every day but have the value of their silver content. Besides, both silver and gold have had value as "money" throughout every society in our history.

When disaster occurs, if you find yourself without the means to barter something of value, you will have to sell your labor or skill set to others or resort to scrounging or theft to survive.

So, is it foolish for me to have enough essentials stored away that your family will be well-set if (when) something catastrophic occurs? I think it's foolish not to.

So, whether you feel you already are a "prepper," or if you would like to be, or if you simply want to be prepared for anything that comes our way and you don't need a label for yourself, get started today.

The noted philosopher Winnie the Pooh once said, "Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up."

Four steps

As my friend Thomas Miller once wrote, "'The Alpha Strategy: The Ultimate Plan of Financial Self-Defense,' a book that was written in 1980 by John Pugsley, outlines how the economy really works and provides an investing strategy that could be a very viable solution for the prepper as well ... it is also an ideal way to accumulate the beans, bullets, and bandages that are paramount to being prepared for an uncertain future.

"It is also conceivable that if there were to be a disaster (regardless of whether it is natural or man-made) that the traditional system of three classes; the upper, middle, and lower, could easily become a two-class system of the haves and have-nots. If this were to become the case, having invested in physical holding that will support survival will turn you into the wealthy for all intents and purposes.

"The Alpha Strategy breaks investments down into four levels. This is the real takeaway for the prepper.

• Level one is investment in production which is essentially education, a second trade, and tools with which to produce (emphasis can be placed on skills that are especially useful in a post-collapse society).
• Level two is to save consumables such as items to maintain your home or shelter, foods, beverages, first aid supplies, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, clothing, etc.
• The third level of The Alpha Strategy is to save real money, this includes manufactured goods for the purpose of resale or barter, raw commodities, and precious metals.
• The fourth and final level is to protect against theft."

I will reiterate that I always consider it prudent to grow at least some of your own food if you can and to store food and water for emergencies. We even set up a website so you can purchase food and water purification at a discount. Everyone should have at the barest minimum of three days of food and water on hand. But even better is at least three weeks of food and water and other essentials at your disposal at all times. More is better.

Gold American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, African Krugerrands and Australian Kangaroos, because they are stamped in English with their weight and gold content clearly marked, are the preferred forms of gold.

Purchase a gun if you can before it's too late. Once you have one, become familiar with its use. Get trained and practice.

I spend more time watching Youtube than regular television. There wasn't much quality content on Youtube at first, but over the past few years some very experienced preppers have started some fantastic channels.

More than half of all Americans “plan to stockpile food and other essentials” for the chaotic months ahead

 Product shortages are NOT over.

I was in the grocery store earlier this week and discovered they were limiting paper goods again, because of supply chain issues (specifically, with paper towels).

And if you remember how it happened BEFORE, first the consumer goods run out... and then the meat department gets cleaned out... and then the shelves are empty of dry goods.

There was a time when preppers were relentlessly mocked, but nobody is laughing now.  Today, most Americans are thinking about stockpiling food, and this massive shift in our national mindset has been sparked by concern about what is going to happen in the months ahead.  Many Americans believe that another wave of the coronavirus pandemic is coming, others believe that our ongoing economic depression will get even deeper, and yet others are convinced that the upcoming election could produce widespread violence. 

Of course there have always been people that have been deeply alarmed about future events, but we have never seen anything quite like this.  In fact, a brand new survey has found that over half of all Americans are currently planning “to stockpile food and other essentials”…

Slightly more than half of Americans in a recent poll from Sports and Leisure Research Group say they already have or plan to stockpile food and other essentials. The chief reason: fears of a resurgent pandemic, which could lead to disruptions such as new restrictions on businesses. On Oct. 2, the number of COVID-19 cases in the USA was its highest in almost two months.

People still remember the shortages that we witnessed earlier this year when the coronavirus pandemic first erupted in this country, and those that ended up being stuck at home without enough toilet paper would rather not repeat that experience.

So as the mainstream media continues to hype a new wave of the pandemic, we should expect to see Americans hitting the grocery stores really hard.  And according to data company Envestnet Yodlee, there is evidence that this is already happening…

Already, there’s some evidence that grocery sales are rising, according to data from industry sources. The typical bill for a trip to the grocery store rose to $72 for the week ended October 6, or 11% higher from the week before, according to data company Envestnet Yodlee.

“That’s the highest we’ve seen since the first week of June and the second-highest since we started tracking this in January,” said Bill Parsons, group president of data and analytics at Evestnet.

Fortunately, many grocery store chains anticipated a spike in demand in advance and started stocking up ahead of time.  The following comes from CNN…

Grocery stores across the United States are stocking up on products to avoid shortages during a second wave of coronavirus.

Household products — including paper towels and Clorox wipes — have been difficult to find at times during the pandemic, and if grocery stores aren’t stocked up and prepared for second wave this winter, runs on products and shortages could happen again.

During a time when other retailers all over the nation are failing at a pace that we have never seen before, many grocery store chains are actually experiencing booming sales.

And of course I have been warning that this would eventually happen for a very long time.  During a time of crisis, demand for food and other essentials tends to go up and demand for non-essential items tends to go down.

Needless to say, this is something that is not just happening in the United States.  All over the world we have seen demand for food on the rise, and this comes at a time when global food production has become increasingly stressed.

As a result, food prices all over the world are starting to escalate quite aggressively…

Food prices continue rising during the coronavirus pandemic, jeopardizing food security for tens of millions worldwide.

On Thursday, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations said world food prices rose for the fourth consecutive month in September, led by surging prices for cereals and vegetable oils, reported Reuters.

FAO’s food price index, which tracks the international prices of the top traded food commodities (cereals, oilseeds, dairy products, meat, and sugar), averaged 97.9 in September versus a downwardly revised 95.9 in August.

Sadly, this is just the beginning.

Global food supplies will continue to get even tighter, and global demand for food will just continue to shoot higher.

So I would stock up while you still can, because prices will never be lower than they are right now.

Meanwhile, our society continues to unravel right in front of our eyes.  You would think that the Lakers winning the NBA title would be a time to celebrate for the city of Los Angeles, but instead large crowds of young people used it as an opportunity to riot and attack police officers…

A crowd of more than 1,000 revelers descended into the area around Staples Center after the game. Unruly individuals mixed within the crowd began throwing glass bottles, rocks, and other projectiles at officers. That is when an unlawful assembly was declared, and only a limited number of people complied and began to disperse. A larger portion of the group broke off and began vandalizing businesses while continuing to engage in violent behavior, some aimed at responding officers.

In Portland, protesters just toppled statues of Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln during a “day of rage”, but the mainstream media didn’t seem to think that this was any sort of a problem.

And in the middle of the country, the violence never seems to stop in the city of Chicago…

Five people were killed and 48 others were injured by gunfire this weekend in Chicago. Five of those wounded were teenagers.

Last weekend saw 37 people shot throughout the city, five of them fatally.

Of course things could soon get a whole lot worse.

According to one recent survey, 56 percent of all Americans expect “an increase in violence as a result of the election”.

Isn’t that incredibly sad?

Many are still hoping that such a scenario can be avoided if one of the candidates is able to build an extremely large lead on election night.  A large enough lead could potentially cause the candidate that is behind to concede fairly quickly, and that may ease tensions.

At this point we are about 500 hours away from the election, and both sides are indicating that they are prepared to fight until the bitter end.

And the side that ultimately ends up losing is likely to throw a massive temper tantrum, and that won’t be good for our country at all.

So it makes sense that so many Americans are making extra preparations for the months that are ahead, because it definitely appears that they could be quite rocky.
