More People Leaving the USA for a Better Life-Would You?

Poor Man Survival

A Digest of Urban Survival Resources

"Liberation is not deliverance."
-- Victor Hugo

Apparently, more than one in three Americans would consider packing up and moving to another country, according to a recent poll of more than 2,000 people.

For millennials (those aged 18-34), that number jumps to an incredible 55%.

The most common reasons given for considering a move abroad were a better quality of life, a lower cost of living, and having new experiences.

Ironic, isn't it… after all, weren’t those the reasons people came to the U.S.?

But of course, times change. Not always for the better.

You don’t have to look far to justify the pessimism about life in America today:

  • We have a National Security Agency that spies on and records every email you send and every Web page you visit
  • The nation’s police forces have been militarized, conducting more than 80,000 paramilitary raids every year
  • Thanks to the 4,500-plus federal crimes and more than 400,000 rules and regulations, daily life itself has been criminalized -- which is why it’s been estimated the average American commits three felonies a day without knowing it.
  • The US has dropped to 13th place in terms of Economic Freedom

Things aren’t much rosier in the economic realm, either.

Sure, if you work for a Silicon Valley startup, life is probably pretty good… but for just about everyone else, it’s ever more challenging to make ends meet.

We live in an “extraction” economy.

“Washington’s empire,” former Reagan Treasury aide Paul Craig Roberts explains, “extracts resources from the American people for the benefit of the few powerful interest groups that rule America.”

Think bank bailouts, the military-industrial complex, Big Pharma, Big Agra…

Put all of this together and it’s no wonder people are contemplating getting out of Dodge.

There’s certainly no shortage of greener pastures.

This is something our friends at International Living have been doing for over 30 years now: showing people that they really can live a more free, relaxed, and healthy life where their dollars go further.

For more than a quarter century 50,000 Americans, mostly retired US military, have been living in Costa Rica where the cost of living a very nice lifestyle has averaged less than $35K annually including top notch medical services and maid service [and great fishing].  They even publish their own newspaper [I once subscribed to it for over a year].

You just have to expand your horizons beyond the borders of the U.S…Perhaps you might want to consider becoming a perpetual tourist as more Americans have.  The USA has become an expensive place to live and this lifestyle might be just the ‘ticket.’

Your New Jet-Set Life on Less Than $1,800 a Month

  • Take advantage of flexible flight searches. Sites like Adioso.com let you find the cheapest fares by searching all flights for an entire region, continent, or even the world. A quick search for one-way tickets from New York to anywhere in South America in May 2015 turns up ticket prices as low as $186 to Colombia, $202 to Panama, and $207 to Aruba. With these prices (assuming one international flight every couple months, plus some smaller trips and overland travel), a couple could easily keep to a $400 monthly transportation budget

  • Housesit for free accommodations. On sites like TrustedHousesitters.com and MindMyHouse.com, you can find free accommodations all over the world in exchange for taking care of someone’s home

  • Stay longer and save. Not only will staying in one place for a week or longer enrich your experience and save money on transportation, but many apartment rentals and hotels offer weekly or monthly discounts. A quick search for monthly pricing in Ecuador and Panama on Airbnb.com shows a variety of nicely furnished apartments priced under $600 per month. Secure house sitting assignments for half your travels and use long-stay discounts on the rest and your monthly housing budget could be as low as $300 (just $3,600 per year)

  • Get on an expat health plan. Companies like International Medical Group (IMG) offer worldwide-coverage health plans that start at just $1,500 for the year. With a monthly budget of $400 for transportation and $300 for housing, all that’s left to factor in is food, supplies, and fun. Monthly groceries can easily be covered in places like Mexico for under $300. You could eat out several times per week and treat yourself to coffees and snacks along the way for $400 per month. The rest of your budget should go toward whatever you find fun -- be it museums, theater, wine tastings, wilderness treks, or yoga on the beach

Thanks to Laissez Faire Letter for many of these resources!

The art is not in making the money, but in keeping it. – Proverb

Many of our readers are concerned about becoming more resilient without spending a lot of money. After all, it’s no secret that the economy hasn’t quite rebounded and the increasing rate of inflation certainly doesn’t help either.

It’s important to remember that money is simply another form of exchange. We have talked in detail about local sharing economies in previous posts and it is one of our main themes.  It is also a perfect example of how we can become more resilient without breaking the bank.

For instance, we can just as easily trade an item we don’t need for something we do. You can literally trade anything that has value to someone else. If you think about it, this isn’t much different than our currency system anyway.

Here are just a few ways I saved money this week…

My AAA Auto Club membership renewal came in the mail this week…I didn’t renew it.

I have AAA’s top tier plan with a 100-mile towing deal but the price in MI goes up every year and I seldom use it.  My price for the same plan in AZ was $98, in MI it’s $145!

I started looking around and found pretty much identical plans available through AARP and AMAC in the $70 range.  Needless to say, I chose another plan which is run by Allstate.

Something else I picked up on.  Milk by the quart (about all I ever use) runs nearly $2 or more at our supermarket.  At our area Dollar Tree store I found milk (in whole, 2% and 1%) aseptic packages for .99 cents.  These are good for longer term storage as well given the ones I purchased don’t expire until nearly 2016!

Although I rarely eat lunchmeat anymore [too much sodium] I found slicing my own bologna and other meats was cheaper than buying it pre-packaged at the supermarket.  However, if you purchase lunch meats that are on sale at the deli counter, you can save up to 31%...just avoid their fancy pre-made salads as they are expensive.

Of course, you can save further by purchasing store brands and researchers recently discovered in many cases, supermarket store brands offered bigger savings over Costco and Walmart, even on household staples and beauty products.  Use coupons to save even more on items you regularly buy.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, buy ribbons and wrapping at dollar stores to save money.  One year my mother had saved the comic sections from newspapers and used them to wrap gifts…better than lining the birdcage!

You can learn more about saving money, creating your own community currency and the art of bartering by visiting our main site and browsing through our many categories.

Hackett Makes His Own Post-apocalyptic Currency [Video]

When civilization collapses, this hand-built coin press could mint money to buy goats, grain, or even a spouse.

Money makes the world run—but without a stable government, paper bills will be little more than fire starters, and coins chips of cheap metal. Bartering is inconvenient: If I desperately want the cat food you’ve stockpiled, but you have no need for the fine moonshine I can produce, it will take multiple trades to satisfy us both. A more efficient solution would be to mint a new currency.

Coins are manufactured by squeezing a disk of soft metal, or planchet, between two harder dies—typically cylinders with images cut into their faces. Given enough energy, the planchet briefly acts like a liquid, flowing into the nooks and crannies of the dies. I chose to mint my coins out of copper, which can be reused to make electrical parts, giving them real-world value. For the dies, I used saltwater and a battery to etch patterns into two hydraulic pistons. Then came the hard part.

Holiday Relief!

I am 55 and single. I have no children. A few years back, I talked to all my family about gift giving on holidays, birthdays, and other occasions. It was too costly to buy for everyone, and to be frank, some just didn't have the money. So at one of the family gatherings, I brought the subject up. We all agreed to stop buying for each other. Everyone was so happy to do it, but no one wanted to bring up the subject because they didn't want everyone to think they were cheap. We enjoy the family gatherings so much more when we eat, play games, and talk to each other. It's much more enjoyable with a lot less stress.

Fresh Bread!

Unless you have a big family, a loaf of fresh French bread will go stale before you eat it. Here's how I solved that problem. When I buy it, I cut it into sections that we will eat at one sitting. I wrap each in plastic wrap and put them into a big freezer bag and store in the freezer. Whenever I want some fresh bread, I pull out a chunk, let it defrost, and pop it into the oven for a minute or two. It's just like it was fresh from the oven!

What Stresses Moms Most, Food in Basement Better than the Bank, Silly Tactics You Fall For

Poor Man Survival

A Digest of Urban Survival Resources

Winning at anything brings pleasure - but winning at life is what brings the greatest and lasting happiness.

What is the number one thing that stresses Moms out?

>>Cash flow, managing money, stretching a budget [especially if you have kids]

35% - the percentage of Americans with credit records being pursued by collection agencies over unpaid debts according to an Urban Inst. Study – most of the debtors are in the south and west like Las Vegas, where nearly half the population has been reported a collection agency.

40 percent of all workers in the United States actually make less than what a full-time minimum wage worker made back in 1968 after you account for inflation.

How to Spend More and Be Financially Secure

You might make the same income as your neighbors make, spend less than they do, save more, and yet still be in a much more precarious financial position. How is that possible? What could some of your neighbors be doing differently that makes them more financially secure? It's all about the nature of your expenditures.

It is common advice to try to spend less for the things you buy and to set aside some money every month. Both are good ideas as far as they go. Of course how you invest the money you set aside makes a big difference in how well you do in the future.

But I'm not going to tell you about your investing options here. That's a topic for another time. I'm going to explain the difference between your fixed versus your discretionary expenses, and which ones you need to watch carefully if you want to have more financial security. I'll start with a simple story...

Food in the basement is better than money in the bank

There are many reasons for stockpiling a one-year supply of food. The value of food commodities generally increases at the same rate as inflation. Money in the bank doesn't do that. Investing in 500 cans of tuna or in dehydrated food that will last five to 10 years are better bets than putting $350 in the bank.  Find what you need below:

Wood-fired earthen ovens are easily documented all the way back (and likely even before) the ancient Romans

Likewise, they are easily documented in archaeological evidence and first-hand accounts from the 18th Century. We show you how easy it is to build one. We've been amazed with how well earthen ovens work, so much so that some of us here at Jas. http://jas-townsend.com built one at home. This episode deals strictly with the oven's construction. In next week's video, we will show you how to bake bread in an earthen oven. We will also use the oven in future videos, comparing results with those that can be achieved by baking in a cast iron Dutch oven. Stay tuned!

Pantry Organization

I use simple, inexpensive plastic dishpans to organize a pantry. I label each one with the contents and then they simply slide in and out of the shelves with ease. The plastic dishpans I buy are around $1 each and last forever. They're also good for keeping track of children's toys and many other items around a home.

Dull knives may seem less dangerous than sharp ones, but that’s far from the truth. When we use dull knives, we have to exert more pressure to cut food, and the resistance of the food can easily cause that dull knife to go out of control. So when you’re using knives in the kitchen, you ... read more
