If you've been with us awhile, you know I'm an admirer of Bolles' and his advocacy of doing things that matter to us, that allow us to "work" our values and leverage our gifts and passions.

There are few worse horrors in the world of work than doing something day after day that means nothing to you. (Many of us have been there, including me.) Self-esteem decays, optimism turns to jaundice, and the soul begins to shrivel like a quick-dried grape.

It doesn't make us much fun to live with, either.

DIY Crisco Survival Candle

You can purchase many “survival candles” that last 12-120 hours, but did you know that you can create a candle that will last for up to 45 days using something that you probably already have in your kitchen?

All you need is:

*a 48 oz tub of Crisco or smaller. The large tub will get you the 45 day life span and anything smaller will burn significantly less
*a spoon
*an old candlestick or something else that can be used as a wick

There are a few options when it comes to creating a Noah candle. One of the first things you need to decide is if you want a candle that will burn brighter or one that will last longer.

For a longer lasting candle you will use only one wick and for a brighter candle you will use anywhere from 2-4 wicks depending on the size of the container.

Regardless of how many wicks you decide to use or the size of the Crisco tub that you choose, the directions are the same.

Homemade vinegar

>Take apple peels and cores from 5 apples, add 2-4 pints water, mash in large container.

>Add 1 cup sugar

Take the sting out of insect bites with a copper penny. Simply tape the penny over sting for 15 minutes and by the next day you should be fine.

I have lamented how our government has not only stripped away core civil liberties from citizens, but that citizens have become increasing passive and accepting of the loss of such freedoms. A new poll conducted by Harris Interactive offers a particularly chilling measure of just how passive and accepting citizens have become to the new realities of our internal security system. The poll found almost one third of American adults would accept a “TSA body cavity search” in order to fly. Moreover a majority believes that it is reasonable to criminalize the act of disobeying any TSA agent.

Avoiding Time-Wasting Searches at the Airport

Research shows that clothing matters. Specifically, it has been found that those wearing sloppy clothing are subjected to more searches than those wearing business clothes. Not sure what this means for other clothing styles, but in any case, tuck in your shirt.

TSA Grows More Powerful

The Transportation Security Administration has been expanding its power for years now, and probably will continue to do so. When Texas tried to pass a law last year that made it a crime for a TSA agent to needlessly grope airline passengers (the language specifically made it illegal to "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly [touch] the anus, sexual organ, buttocks, or breast"), the TSA came down hard. They warned that passing the law could lead to them shutting down all airports in Texas. Naturally, the legislators dropped the bill. Whether you’re looking to slim down, build muscle, train for a marathon, or just protect your health, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. And a fast-food morning meal is not the worse choice. Instead, the unhealthiest option is not eating a morning meal at all.

The Parting Thought-Changes in attitude toward the Police

A tipping point in the public attitude toward law enforcement is under way... finally! A significant number of people have realized that America is either currently a police state or it is teetering on the crumbling edge to one.

Part of the sea change comes from the deliberate militarization of police departments, where tanks, drones, and SWAT teams have become standard. A military-style training, in which civilians are viewed as combatants, has deepened the antagonism of the police toward the public so that violent incidents are commonplace.

Part of the sea change also comes from the increased use of law enforcement against children in public schools. Last May, New Mexico police officer Chris Webb was visiting a school for career day when he asked a group of young boys to wash his police car. A 10-year-old refused. According to an ensuing lawsuit against Webb and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, the officer told the youngster, "Let me show you what happens to people who do not listen to the police." Webb then used a Taser on him, sending 50,000 volts of electricity into the 100-pound boy's chest. He lost consciousness. Instead of seeking medical care, however, Webb merely carried him into the principal's office. The officer claims it was all an accident and points to his punishment -- a three-day suspension -- as proof the police department believes him.

The backlash goes on and on. The raw money grabs being made by police in the name of civil forfeiture have also sparked fury. Under civil forfeiture, property that was involved in a crime can be confiscated and sold by police departments. It doesn't matter if the victims of the forfeiture have committed no crime or have never been charged with one.

To understand the reality that the police are not there for you is an extremely valuable piece of information. If you are depending on them to protect you, to guard you against real crime, to stop intruders or muggers and to prosecute after the fact, you have been sorely misled.

Every citizen who wants to be free must prepare for his or her own defense against violence. The market is there to assist with security services, alarm systems, property monitoring devices, ever more sophisticated locks, and, of course, guns of all sorts. In the end, we are responsible for our own security. The state will not come to your rescue. On the contrary, it is the market that provides the means by which we are rescued from the state.
