Hair Pin Turns
& Plenty Native American Ruins & Learning on CO Trip
Our road trip throughout
western CO proved exciting and enlightening from running into an Amish couple from PA at
Mesa Verde National Park [no, they didn’t drive their horse and buggy] to
driving along hair pin turns at 10mph along winding mountain roads atop 15,000
foot high mountain peaks through Durango and other small towns [sans guard
rails]…I’ll admit, my cajones are mighty rusty as the thought of going over the
edge of one of these roads was not comforting!
We visited dozens of Native American pueblo ruins, the Ute Indian
Museum and Center several and National Parks throughout the state. Thankfully, I have a National Park pass which
I had obtained years before during visits to Montezuma’s Castle in AZ. Being disabled and a veteran I have a
lifetime pass and this saved us a ton of cash on park fees.
I have studied Native American history off and on since attending
Arizona State University in the 70s and just prior to our departure my wife and
I had viewed a 30 hour program about Native Americans and the American West
from the Great Courses [a very worthwhile resource offering a wide range of
topics] provided in conjunction with National Geographic and the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Everywhere we visited folks were friendly and roads were in good
condition [unlike MI which has the same weather, CO takes much better care its
highways and bridges].
My cousin who is an EMT and firefighter told me the state government
and local governments have been good stewards of its marijuana tax sale proceeds
and have invested heavily in infrastructure projects. Various innkeepers I spoke with verified that
and suggested legalization has been good for tourism as well and it has boosted
population numbers too. Additionally,
crime numbers seem to have remained in check-no one is running out to rob the
7-11s of chips and ‘ding-dongs’ while smoking a joint!
MI has not been known for its good stewardship of public money in
recent decades, especially under Democratic leadership which has seen the
demise of Detroit, its infrastructure and the state. Only recently has it made somewhat of a
comeback but at great expense to the taxpayer so we’ll see how it fares in
November when a ballot initiative for marijuana legalization takes place.

The
Levi Strauss Co. might need to revamp its 1977
slogan to,
“We put a little gun control in everything we make.” Company President and CEO
Chip Bergh announced in Fortune that the iconic
clothing manufacturer is taking a public stand against guns.
The
two-pronged approach includes teaming up with Michael Bloomberg’s group,
Everytown for Gun Safety, to create an offshoot called Everytown Business
Leaders for Gun Safety. The second facet is to start a Safer Tomorrow Fund to
help nonprofits and youth activists who are working to curtail gun rights in
the name of ending violence.
Just
to make sure the
message gets out to all Levi’s employees about where Bergh stands, well ...
the company will use a rather heavy-handed approach, encouraging employees to
donate to gun control causes because, hey, Levi Strauss will provide twice that
much in matching funds. The clothing company will also encourage its workers to
spend their five hours a month of paid volunteer time for anti-gun groups. (So,
now their employer is going to play Big Brother and monitor where they spend
their volunteer time. What's next, will Levi's watch how they spend their free
time, too? What if someone goes hunting or to the range?)
Bergh
describes Levi’s a “values-driven company that’s known the world over as a
pioneer of the American West and one of the great symbols of American freedom.”
But Second Amendment supporters really have to ask how the notion of freedom
equates to infringing on the constitutional rights of millions of law-abiding
Americans.
Of
course, Levi’s sold out when it comes to U.S. jobs years ago by outsourcing
much of its labor to Thailand, so why should we expect the company to adhere to
any other American ideals?
Average workers in the bottom 40
percentiles of the earnings distribution saw their disposable earnings decrease
over a 16-year period: In constant dollars, annual premiums for full-time,
full-year single workers rose from $415 in 1999 to $1,068 in 2015, an increase
of $623 per year.
Average U.S. health expenditures rose to $10,348 per person in 2016.

We’re getting dangerously close. By
the first quarter of this year, household debt was at an all-time high of $13.2
trillion.

Yippee! Not the kind of roads I'd take kindly to either. Glad your trip was worthwhile and safe. The views sound breathtaking. I had heard CO has done very well with its pot revenues.
I forgot to mention...we saw a lot of wildlife during this trip. A herd of antelope, a coyote scrambling up the side of the mountain, to a small herd of mule deer and their babies just outside of our hotel room one night. Although there were a ton of signs warning for elk we never did see any [darn]. Plenty of open country and we spoke to many people who depended on hunting to fill their larder for food but were somewhat timid about speaking of this due to anti-gun fears.
