The Post-Coronavirus Economy-Befriending Fear

Yes, most people have lost money.

Industries have been destroyed.

People are hurting.

And yet, behind the scenes of the fear mongering media, new industries, ideas, and new ways of life are beginning to sprout.

[Note: Though things are bad, nothing has been lost that cannot be rediscovered (and, this time, with a newfound appreciation). As you may know, we here at LFT are insufferable optimists about the future of freedom, sovereignty, and prosperity… but not for no reason. More on that soon.]

Ferriss, a friend to the Stoics, realizes one important thing that will make ALL the difference;

Fear, if not dealt with, will block us from seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

The Ancient Technique to Befriend Fear

It’s often the case that people emotionally unprepared for a crisis will FREEZE…

Or do something wildly counterproductive…

All out of not being prepared -- or being unwilling -- to handle their own emotional state in a time of crisis.

One way to keep your head, then, is an ancient Stoic technique called premeditatio malorum (or foreseeing badness).

In short, when trying to make a big decision…

You visualize (and write out) the absolute worst-case scenario you can imagine (including, but not limited to, facing death square in the jaw).

And then you write how you would deal with it.

“A big part of that for me,” says Ferriss of this technique, “has been deeply envisioning the worst-case scenarios and what they would not just look like, but FEEL like to observe and experience.”

Ferriss gave the example of his portfolio dropping up to 70%... and the decision he had to make beforehand, knowing he would take a hit.

“... In this case,” he said, “I’m referring to Uber, that I was an early advisor to so it represents a disproportionately high percentage of my net-worth.”

After much deliberation, seeing the virus coming, and considering the worst-case scenario...

Ferriss sold a small amount in February, and decided to hold the rest.

“That could prove to be a terrible, terrible, terrible decision,” he admitted. “This could be the worst financial decision of my life…”

But it’s a decision he’s willing to make for himself, accept any consequences, and move forward.

One of the perks of ”negative visualization” is you PURGE yourself of the dreaded “analysis paralysis” brought on by fear.

And, having not acted completely out of fear, you’re able to move on without regret.
