If you'd like to avoid all of the tempting sales this weekend, here are some things you can do that can help you free up some extra cash for your holiday budget or simply improve your budget:

·         Put together a holiday budget: If you still need to plan your holiday expenditures, spend some time figuring out how much you have to spend and what you'll need to spend. Then figure out how you might cover the difference.

·         Sell some stuff: With so much shopping going on this week, why not post some things for sale on eBay or other selling sites and earn some of what everyone else is spending?

·         Start a side gig: An additional income stream can be a wise move right now, given the current economic climate. Spend the long weekend finally getting that side gig started, or search for a part-time job opportunity.

·         Do a mini pantry challenge: Clean out and organize your pantry, fridge and freezer and plan meals you can make with the ingredients and foods you have on hand. Avoid the grocery store for the next few weeks and use the extra cash for the holidays.

·         Shop for new auto insurance: Insurance companies might not offer Black Friday deals, but it doesn't mean you can't score some discounts. (You can get quotes here.) Even if you don't shop for new coverage, review your current coverage to ensure you're getting all of the discounts that apply to you.

DIY Cooking Spray

Since I cook and bake a lot, I was buying cooking spray frequently. Finally, I decided to make my own. I mix one cup of shortening, one cup of flour, and two tablespoons of vegetable oil. I mix it up and keep it in an old butter tub in the fridge. I use a crumpled-up paper towel to spread it on my pans.

Saving on Carpet Cleaning

I clean carpets for a living. If you want to clean your carpets yourself, mix 1/2 cap of liquid laundry detergent to about a gallon of water in a bucket. Scrub soiled areas with a stiff brush. Get the carpet pretty wet to make sure it gets clean. Load a home machine with hot water only, no soap. You'll just be using the machine to rinse. Dry by using a fan.

It's cheap, and it will save you the cost of bringing in a professional.
