America, the mature market, is still
being robbed blind
While
energy companies are posting healthy profits, HSBC, Europe’s largest bank,
announced it was eliminating 30,000 jobs – about 10% of its workforce and it is
scaling back operations in ‘mature markets’ including the United States (it
just sold 195 branches in upstate New York for a cool one billion in cash).
McDonald’s
plans to increase the number of outlets is has in China by 2,000 in 2013 and
hire 50,000 employees there this year.
Although it recently went on a one-day hiring spree in the United
States, it sees more growth in Asian markets than in Europe or the US.
If you
follow the stock market you already know sovereign debt problems in Europe and
our recent Standard and Poor’s credit downgrade have seen more investment in
growth countries such as China, India and Brazil…we’re a mature market, after
all.
This means
we’ll most likely continue to see a downgrade in employment domestically and if
the housing market is any indicator, it doesn’t look good. US home ownership has fallen to its lowest
level since 1998 and does not appear that it will see any meaningful uptick in
the near future. Meanwhile, Washington
continues its best efforts at hampering our economy by new orders giving itself
more power to ban energy exploration on any public land and they’ve federalized
what had been a state-level permitting process for energy projects.
Recently,
the Obama Administration quietly secured for itself the power to ‘freeze’ all
money market accounts in the event of another run on the system…it appears they
realize just how bad our economic system has become due to Congressional
malfeasance.
What this
continues to mean for all Americans is that we must take matters into our own
hands while we still can. While the
government continues bankrupting the nation, bulldozing the private sector with
job-destroying nonsensical red tape and costs, trampling citizens’ rights and
more…it’s up to us to circumvent the war on citizens.
More and
more folks have begun to realize that our country is being systematically
looted by Wall Street bankers and other special interests.
As one
pundit recently quipped, “Our country is no more than a pipe bomb away from the
imposition of a police state…the feds stand ready to exploit any national
tragedy to advance its power over all of our lives.”
The secret to fluffier
pancakes – swap out the milk or buttermilk in the recipe equal amounts of
seltzer water…the bubbles will help aerate the batter to produce lighter
cakes. Add to batter last, gently
folding it in.

Quick Survival Tips in a pinch
You may curse the
Prius' popularity now, but when the world is deserted and you're in need of
some electricity, you'll be glad you put up with them. With a simple inverter,
you can turn a Prius into a long-lasting generator that'll keep you warm, revive your phone, or keep
your taser fully charged
We all know you should have an "in case of
emergency" number on your phone, but technology affords us many more opportunities. You can use Google Voice to dial multiple family
members at once, or use a service like I'm OK to quickly notify
a group of people that you've
survived the most recent disaster. And, if worst does come to worst, you'll
want to make sure your loved ones can locate your important information, so an in-case-of-emergency everything document is a good idea.
When night falls and
you need to stay warm, you'll want a quick way to start a fire. You can make an emergency fire starter out of a
t-shirt, or, if you don't
want to waste your clothes, a few egg cartons and drier lint. You can, of course, also make a more stove-like "Buddy
Burner" out of trash, a soda can and some alcohol, or just make a lamp out of a tuna can and some
string.
The above tips will
get you by, but we all know the people that last the longest during the
apocalypse will be the ones that had a plan. Make sure your home is
emergency-ready with a 72-hour disaster kit, and when it's time to hit the road, make sure you
can fit a few survival items in an Altoids tin or in an old wristwatch. It may seem like a waste of time now, but when a
calamity strikes, your life will be a lot less stressful for it.
Is Raw Milk Safe?
The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention recommends against drinking raw milk. Even if the cow is healthy, the place where
the milking is done is clean…raw milk can still transmit diseases caused by
salmonella, E.coli and other bacteria.
Those germs are killed during the pasteurization process.
Drinking raw milk
is especially risky for children and people with weakened immune systems and
for the elderly.
Home Made Gatorade
Save money on store
bought by using this recipe for rehydration fluids:
2 quarts water, 2
Tbs. of granulated or brown sugar, ½ tsp. salt, 1 tsp. of baking soda and 1 cup
of apple or orange juice.
Magnetic Generators - A Real Alternative to Solar Power
If you’re interested
in alternative energy and saving money, you've no doubt thought about looking
into solar power. While solar power is still the first choice for many people,
magnetic energy is becoming increasingly popular. Despite it's many advantages
over solar power, magnetic energy will always be less popular for the simple
reason that magnetic generators can't be bought, they have to be built.
When a moving magnetic
field passes through a conductor, it generates electric current. By moving a
magnet very quickly through a coil of wire, a generator can produce a
continuous current. Homemade generators are a simple way to demonstrate the
process that powers lights, computers and countless other electronic devices
the world over.
Run major appliance
during non-peak hours - You probably
didn't know this but your power company has different rates during peak hours.
Running large appliances like your clothes dryer during these peak hours costs
you more money. So if you only run your dryer during non-peak hours (for most
this will be on weekends and after 9PM) it can have a big impact on your power
bill.
To ease indigestion, sip 4 ounces of water mixed with
½ teaspoon of baking soda.
More Online Sites for free learning
The Poor Man featured an article last year on the
growth of ‘free’ learning resources; here’s a few more notable ones we’ve run
across:
>AcademicEarth.Org – Offers 1,500 video
lectures by professors from Yale, Harvard and other top schools.
>KhanAcademy.org – Provides a refresher
on finance basics as well as tools for helping your kids learn geometry –
21,000 plus videos; learn at your own pace.
>HowCast.com – divided into categories
such as environment, first aid, and parenting.
Experts share their knowledge via video on a wide range of topics
including surviving heart attacks to playing charades.
Fast relief from itchy bug bites…rub a dollop of mint-flavored
toothpaste onto the irritated area.
The Parting shot…the
fleecing has begun
In addition to being ruthless and desperate, the
political class is deeply infected with a sense of entitlement – to YOUR money.
It’s taken decades,
but the political imbeciles in Washington appear to have finally killed the
goose that lays the golden eggs of the American Dream – our once fabulous,
job-creating private economy.
Looted by
lawyers, crippled by draconian regulation, castrated by job-killing taxation,
and micromanaged to near-death by evil, incompetent, power-seeking ninnies –
America’s once-great system of entrepreneurship is on its deathbed.
To give you an idea of
just how much financial pressure the government is under, consider that even
mass confiscation of private assets won’t be enough to save Congress from
bankruptcy.
Not long ago, for
example, Dallas Federal Reserve Bank president Richard Fisher made a frank but
virtually unnoticed speech. It should be required reading for anyone who has to
pay taxes.
In addition to
criticizing the political class for getting the U.S. into a “deep hole,” Fisher
observed that federal unfunded liabilities (meaning obligations Uncle Sam can’t
currently pay for) are close to $99 TRILLION!
Petty Fleecing
of the Public Has Already Begun
You may have noticed
the petty fleecing by state and federal employees has already begun. More
state-level, federally-inspired speed traps, automated camera ticket scams,
green fines of all stripes, regulatory penalties for petty infractions on home
improvement projects, mysterious new Internet and cell phone “surcharges,” and
on and on.
If you like to enjoy
afternoons on your local lake, you’ve probably noticed the number of officious
police, game wardens, and forestry agents have recently multiplied (all from
different jurisdictions trolling for fines, fines, fines) – barking orders at sunbathers
and handing out tickets to working-class boaters for ridiculous petty
infractions.
The long arm of Uncle
Sam’s intrusive tax collection schemes seems to know no limits. For example the
Census Bureau is now using satellite global positioning systems (GPS) to create
a national database of the precise coordinates of each U.S. home (making it
easier for government-contracted satellite systems to “inventory” what is on
your property).
The AMT -
Alternative Minimum Tax is already snaring many middle class taxpayers in its
‘Catch 22” rules.
