Everyone agrees that America has to rebalance the share of production and consumption in GDP. But companies won’t ratchet up investment in a time of declining demand. Short-term actions, like a payroll tax holiday and extending unemployment benefits would help. A more substantive response would be heavy public spending on jobs-intensive infrastructure and energy projects—both sorely needed in any case—ideally accompanied by strong "buy American" rules.

Restoring the American Dream

Without a serious intervention, our current government is beyond redemption… The New World Confusion reigns in America.

Throughout previous issues of our Bulletin, we point out how politicians have ruined this great country.  By now, one should realize Washington is not coming to your rescue. You must work on restoring yourself before it is too late.

The modern American Dream had always been a general prosperity and well-being for the average person. European civilization had produced the great cathedrals of the world. America had the two-car garage. And this middle-class contentment created a country of optimists.

Progressives have perverted the meaning of the term American Dream in an effort to transform the America of our Founding Fathers. They would have you believe that the American Dream is about increased government benefits and government-created rights…something they cannot grant as we already have them.  It’s up to us to take back those rights and tell the government to go to hell.

As we head into a decade of lowered expectations, should we focus on restoring the dream or replace it with a better dream?

What exactly is the American Dream?

It is about having a strong people and a weak government.

It is about the right of every citizen to keep the fruits of his labor.

It is about the sanctity of each individual's natural right to maintain sole dominion over his own life.

It is about true prosperity—not false prosperity generated through government schemes.

It is about every individual's natural right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is about self responsibility and self-reliance

As Congress has bankrupted America during the past 30 years, consider some of the consequences:

- The United States ranks behind Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, and Canada in social mobility across generations.

- The United States is number 1 in terms of our total debt to other countries.

- The United States has the number 1 military, spending WAY more than any other country

Lamp chimneys and glassware for hot water are made less liable to break by putting in cold water, bringing slowly to boiling point, boiling for an hour, and allowing to cool before removing from the water

Oil and Kerosene Lamp Tips

Always fill the lamps every day and in the daytime; never fill a lamp after dark near a lighted lamp; when lighting oil lamps, never light an almost empty lamp, as the empty space is nearly always filled with a very explosive gas. Never fill an oil lamp when lighted.

If the lamp wick is dry after filling, allow it to become saturated with oil before lighting.

Adjust the wick making sure it is level and trim with scissors if necessary. The wick may have to be adjusted to avoid smoking after lighting.

In putting out a lamp, turn the flame down low, and wave a fan, book, or paper across the top of the chimney. Blowing down the chimney is very dangerous when a lamp is nearly empty and turned up high.

To prevent lamp wicks from smoking, soak them in vinegar and then dry them thoroughly.
Never start a fire in a stove or fireplace with the kerosene lamp oil.

Here are a couple of added safety tips for lighting oil lamps that my old Dad taught me:

1. Never overfill the container with lamp oil; fill to just over three-quarters full.

2. And always make sure the lamp or lantern is sitting on a stable, level surface and never leave burning lamps unattended

Tower of Power

Unique solar collector brings power to 25,000 homes in Seville, Spain; producing 19.9 megawatt of power from 2650 mirrors to the tip of a central tower.  The sunlight heats molten salt which is stored, and it produces steam as it cools, powering generators for 15 hours day or night or during bad weather.  This thermal storage design promises higher temperature steam and better efficiency that competing solar designs.

Two years ago, we wrote about another unique offgrid methane generation system used in Spain (acres of foliage producing carbon dioxide, captured by an inverted funnel which fuels turbines)…why are we so far behind on these amazing technologies?

Castor Oil as a Dressing for Leather

Castor oil, besides being an excellent dressing for leather, renders it vermin-proof; it should be mixed, say half and half, with tallow or other oil. Neither rats, roaches, nor other vermin will attack leather so prepared.

The Nanny State Updates…

An Unemployment Report That Screams Spectacular Failure

As Pres. Obama travels rural America preaching jobs…

Spectacular failure. These words came to mind as the dismal employment data for June were released last Friday. After the biggest spending binge in peacetime American history, the unemployment rate is stuck above 9%, while in May fewer than 20,000 jobs were created in what was once a vibrant U.S. economy. Adding in discouraged workers drives the combined rate to 16.2%. Wage rates fell, as did the average workweek.

It may get worse. In a U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey of small businesses released Monday, 64% of the executives surveyed reported no plans to add workers, while 12% had plans to cut jobs. Only 19% said they planned to add employees.  --Charles Kadlec of Forbes Magazine

According to CNN, sales of safes and vaults are absolutely soaring right now. One store owner told CNN that she believes that she is selling a lot more safes now because people are scared that civil unrest could be coming....Another recent poll found that only 17 percent of Americans now believe that the U.S. government has the consent of the governed.

Invest in yourself…according to Fareed Zakaria   – The Parting Thought

Although not widely reported on mainstream news, violence, especially among the young, is growing at an alarming rate.  Teens have a high unemployment rate, 44% among Black youth and they’re participating in what’s being termed ‘flash mobs’ violence.  Overwhelmed police had to be called out at the Wisconsin State Fair recently due to such unruly mobs who were on a rampage of beating and destruction.

Desperate people do desperate things. Many of America's "forgotten poor" are trying to survive any way that they can. For instance, a group of vagrants recently set up "a makeshift camp" near Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn. According to the New York Post, many nearby residents have been disturbed by what these "drifters" are doing to survive....

The drifters have been illegally trapping and cooking up the critters that call the park home, including squirrels, ducks and swan-like cygnets.

They used crude tactics to hunt their prey, including barbed fishing hooks that ripped off the top half of one poor gosling's beak. They then cooked the meat over illegal fires. Some of the animals were eaten raw.

CNN personality, Fareed Zakaria, has been sounding the alarm and has been presenting ideas for restoring the American Dream…

‘Questioning with Boldness’ and ‘Reading up on our Founders’ may be good advice for the political sphere, but what Fareed suggests is more personal…

Learn a new trade, set up a local service, learn a new language, hell, learn math. Learn how to read. (That one came from me.) All of this are something you can do now—and do it online for free, look back to that pyramid—and each of them will re-energize your personal life and your personal improvement. And if enough people would do that, and stop railing on each other and get off their couches and do something—anything, even a hobby—with themselves, the American Dream will without a doubt be back to full speed.
