Since we live in an area with a faulty power grid, I often write about alternative energy ideas and resources. No matter where you live, it is always a good time to look at solar energy.  Jessica of MPOWERED read one of our articles and sent me a pretty remarkable device called Luci, an inflatable, micro-solar lantern that is waterproof, shatterproof, lightweight, portable and rechargeable.

MPOWERD offers many solar related products that are functional for emergencies, camping and boating, power outages, auto breakdowns and other crisis situations.  I might suggest grabbing a few for your family or perhaps to use for gift giving this holiday season.

There are several areas a homeowner needs to examine before you convert a home to solar energy.  One helpful site is FindSolar.com, a web site powered by the American Solar Energy Society which helps you calculate the estimated savings you will realize based on the variables.

MPOWERED also offers their product as a fundraiser, something worth reviewing for you Boy Scout group, church, school or other organization.

Net meters allow customers who generate electricity through their solar panels to feed electricity back into the grid. The meter also gives the consumer a breakdown of usage with each monthly bill. You can monitor exactly how much it's costing to cool or heat your home, wash your dishes or dry your clothes, for example. More »

Home Wind Power in my Backyard - Oh Yeah!

Yesterday I wrote about our most recent power outage and some of the backup resources we use to overcome these hiccups.  Today, we’re bringing another option for you to consider.

Home Wind Power: Yes, in My Backyard!

by Megan E. Phelps

Is home wind power a good choice for you? The answer may surprise you, because living in a windy area is not necessarily the most important factor. In fact, many properties are not a good fit for installing a wind turbine even if they have a lot of wind. On the other hand, if you want to go off-grid and produce your own electricity, you almost certainly want to consider installing a home wind turbine, even if your location is not notably windy.

Here’s the deal: For a home wind turbine to be worth your investment, you really need to live on an acre or more. Living in a rural area helps, because if you’re in a residential neighborhood, you’re likely to run into conflicts with zoning and local homeowners associations. You’re more likely to find a high average wind speed in wide open spaces far from windbreaks such as buildings and trees.

That’s the case for Cam and Michelle Mather, who live on 150 forested acres in rural Ontario. The Mathers live in an off-grid home powered by solar panels and their micro wind turbine, a 1-kilowatt (kw) Bergey Excel 1. On such a large property, they’re nowhere near their closest neighbors, so there’s no one who might be upset.

The Mathers’ local wind speeds are not ideal, yet home wind power works beautifully for them. The biggest issue with the Mathers’ property is that they have too many trees, and even though their small wind turbine is easily 40 feet above the tree line, the landscape slows down the wind. Wind still makes sense for them, though, because they’re off the grid, so their only electricity is what they produce and then store in batteries. They started with solar panels, but adding a wind turbine to the mix made the whole system much more stable and efficient — a major benefit when you’re solely responsible for generating your own electricity.

If your main goal is energy self-sufficiency, you may want to be off the grid. But if you’re simply interested in producing your own residential wind power, a grid-connected system can make a lot of sense. With this setup, anytime your wind turbine produces more power than your home needs, that power goes onto the local utility grid. When you need more power than you’re generating, you draw power from the grid. Grid-connected systems are often cheaper, because without the responsibility of producing all of your own electricity, you can install a smaller, less expensive system.

That’s how it works for John Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist on their rural property in Browntown, Wis. About 10 years ago, Ivanko and Kivirist installed their 10-kilowatt Bergey Excel turbine on a 120-foot tower. They’re now generating about 10,000 kilowatt-hours (kwh) per year, an amount just slightly below the average annual household electricity use in the United States.

The couple invested in home energy efficiency before they started installing renewable energy, however, and with an efficient home, they now generate more electricity than they need.

Exactly how this relationship with the utility works depends on state regulations. Wisconsin, like most states, has net metering regulations that help make grid connection a good deal for homeowners. When you use electricity from the utility, your meter runs forward, and when you put excess electricity onto the grid, it runs backward.

Ivanko and Kivirist estimate that the total installed cost of their 10-kw wind turbine was about $39,500, but their out-of-pocket costs were less than half of that, thanks to a state grant and other creative financing.

The Mathers chose off-grid living for environmental reasons, but the decision to go off-grid can sometimes make sense purely in financial terms. To begin with, if you live in a truly remote area and want to go off-grid, installing renewable energy systems will often be less expensive than paying the utility company to extend a power line to your property. In fact, some states require that the utility provide information on renewable energy alternatives whenever a customer requests a power line extension.

One of the easiest factors to calculate is individual renewable energy incentives. In the United States, small wind turbines currently qualify for a federal tax credit of 30 percent, which is scheduled to continue through 2016. The Department of Energy’s wind guide recommends 10 mph as a minimum average wind speed if you want to consider installing a grid-connected turbine.

What else do you really need to know if you’re considering wind energy? Paul Gipe, author of Wind Power: Renewable Energy for Home, Farm and Business, has been researching and writing about wind turbines since the mid-1970s. While he’s a big supporter of renewable energy, he’s also an outspoken consumer advocate.

Here’s his short list of things consumers need to know about small wind turbines.

Tower Height. First, yes, you really do need that tall tower, because average wind speeds increase substantially with height. “For a small, residential-sized turbine, it should be at least 80 to 100 feet tall,” Gipe says. You’ll see wind turbines mounted on shorter towers, and they may be producing some electricity — just likely not as much electricity as you’d want, and making the financial side of wind work out is difficult if you’re not producing enough power.

Roof Mounting. “Never put a wind turbine on the roof,” Gipe advises. This comes up all the time, because a big part of the expense of the turbine is the tower, and people are looking for ways to save a little money. This isn’t the way to do it, however.

Certification. Avoid being seduced by a new wind turbine design that sounds wonderful but doesn’t have the test data to back it up. Look for established manufacturers with a proven track record and certified test results that show how much electricity you will be able to produce.

Safety. “Make sure that the turbine can be safely serviced and operated,” Gipe says. “Based on available technology, that means making sure that the tower can be safely lowered to the ground.” In other words, consider a tilt-down tower rather than one that requires you to work on the wind turbine 100 feet in the air.

Ivanko and Kivirist have a few additional words of wisdom: Get insurance. They didn’t have to do anything special to get liability insurance — it was just one more item listed on their homeowners insurance policy, Ivanko explains. However, they also insured their wind turbine against damages, and were grateful they had done so when the blades cracked during a severe storm last year.

And some final words from Cam and Michelle Mather: Don’t be intimidated — you can do it! When the Mathers went off the grid 15 years ago, they couldn’t find anyone in their area who knew about solar panels or wind turbines, so they had to learn everything themselves.

Wasted Energy-Who is to Blame?

Some of you might be old enough to recall the Arab Oil Embargo of the early 1970s when drivers could only buy gasoline on opposite days.  Lines of cars could be found at every service station which had fuel as supplies didn’t last. The price shot up to as much as .75 cents a gallon.  (Now, the per- gallon tax is enough to make you scream).

Thankfully, I rode a bike to school back then.

President Jimmy Carter to the rescue!   Carter created the Department of Energy with a promise to make our nation less dependent on foreign oil.  Through the years, that agency kept doubling in size and the price of fuel never came down nor did we ever shake our oil dependency.

The ‘crisis’ ended and I purchased a 1969 Chevelle Super Sport which sucked a gallon of premium (or hi-test as we called it) gas just turning the ignition (it was a hell of a chick magnet though).

Fast forward a couple of decades.  Janet Napolitano is the governor of AZ and politicians and academics are calling for ideas to make the nation more energy sufficient.  Working with the Dept. of Energy I created a detail proposal for the state to capitalize on its most abundant free resources, the Sun.  I suggested placing solar panels on the berms of the state’s network of highways through a combined effort with the DOE and area utilities.

The state already owned the land and the DOE was willing to help fund the project through grants.  Long story short…thank you for your wonderful idea, we’ll take it under advisement.  Nothing ever happened and I suppose if they had acted on my plan, someone else would’ve grabbed the credit.

The DOE provided me with several interesting background data sheets however which highlighted:

·         The government is the biggest consumer of energy and gasoline with the post office and the military topping the list; law enforcement coming in at a close third.

·         Poor traffic light management (constant stop and start) of cities throughout the nation were among the top five biggest gasoline wasting drains and millions of gallons could be saved through better timing.

·         The amount of government research dollars for alternative energy amounted to almost nothing

·         Bad Press and government regulation has discouraged additional nuclear power facilities in the USA

·         Regulators have aimed their fuel efficiency standards at the auto industry

·         New EPA regulations are stifling the coal and natural gas industries which will ensure that prices will rise for consumers.

The government and pressure from environmental groups have helped to improve air quality standards but have also driven up the cost for anything energy related for industry and citizens.

Using available technology we have personally cut our water and energy usage and drive a very fuel efficient car.  Unfortunately, like many other Americans, no matter what our efforts are, government interference in the market continually raises prices, a losing proposition for many.

Going completely off-grid can be expensive and daunting and in some cases, filled with government interference like the woman in FL we recently reported on.  Her off-grid home is under attack by regulators.  Thankfully, various non-profit groups have come to her legal aid.

We’re still reviewing our options for taking our mini-farm completely off-grid.  We own our water system and septic and have a backup generator.  Soon we’ll install a system of solar and wind that we’ll adapt from an RV system.

What Makes My Electric Bill So High?
For most of us the electric bill is one of the larger bills that we pay each month. Therefore, it's only natural that we'd want to reduce it if possible. So here's a look at three important things - how your bill compares to the average, what makes the average electric bill so high, and what you can do to reduce your bill.

Sheerwind is an innovative wind power generation company founded by Dr. Daryoush Allaei.

The company recently announced its work on a bladeless wind turbine called INVELOX. Rather than using large and expensive blades, INVELOX captures wind and forces it through tapering passageways to ground-level generators. As the air is squeezed through these passageways, its intensity is amplified – a more efficient design (in theory at least).

Decoding Retailers' Price Tags

There actually is a method to retailers' price tag madness. At Costco, for example, prices that end in 97, 88, 00 are markdowns, whereas those ending in 49, 79 or 89 are manufacturers' specials. Here is a chart to decode various retailers' pricing policies including Gap, Old Navy, Home Depot, JCP, Office Depot, Sam's Club, Staples, and more. Here are a few more frugal living tips…

Growing tomatoes in a bra

Large tomatoes will require support. Tomato plants don’t have a very strong stem and usually bend (sometimes break) under the weight of the growing tomatoes - especially due to the larger tomatoes. Generally, “stakes” are used to provide some support to the stem so as to keep the tomatoes off the soil. The book goes a step further and suggests tying a used/worn-out bra between two stakes, in such a way that the cups supports large tomatoes.

Using diapers as water reservoirs for plants

This is again in the context of tomatoes (is tomato gardening so popular? - there are a lot of tips and tricks in the book about growing tomatoes). According to the book, you can reduce the frequency of watering tomato plants by placing the absorbent material from a disposable diaper underneath the soil, and then planting your tomato plant on the top. Whenever you water the the plant, some of the water will be absorbed by the soil and the rest will be absorbed by the diaper material. When the soil dries out, the roots can still suck up water from soaked diaper (scientifically, when the soil dries out, the soil itself sucks up the water from the diaper - which is analogous to how a candle wick draws up wax - by capillary action). This way you could probably get away with watering just a couple of times a week.

Here are 5 key ways from the PurposeFairy.com
I found to be invaluable in changing my relationship to money
and developing a 'prosperity' consciousness:

1. Change your mIndset (yes, it is the first step!)

"Money is just energy, and the longer you believe you
will never have it, the longer you’ll be stuck in this money rut.
Challenge your current perspective on money by filling in the
blank “Making money is _______”. Was your answer hard /
stressful / boring / etc? If yes, time to change that!
Fill in the blank with NEW word from the following options
– fun / exciting / easy.."

2. Stop spending money on frivolous things

"Every single time you pull out your wallet, ask yourself
“Is spending this money helping me get closer to my goal?”
If the answer is no, put it away and walk on by. Yes, it’ll
sting in the moment, but when you can finally invest in your
bigger life goals, you’ll be grateful you had
the willpower to say no when it mattered
.."

3. Start talking about what you want

"Put it at the forefront of your mind everyday. Tell everyone you
know. Talk to strangers about it. How could this possibly help
you with money? You never know. There just might be someone
out there who has connections to someone or something that c
an help you get it. The more you let the world know
you’re serious about asking it happen, the easier it is for
people to help you get what you want."

4. Make saving money a game

"Every time you say no to spending frivolously, keep track
of exactly how much money you saved, and put that exact
amount of cash in your “BIG DREAM” jar/account (you do have
one of those, don’t you?). As you watch your jar fill up, it becomes
more and more motivating to continue to save, knowing that you’re
saving for something that
really
matters. Toss your spare change in t
here while you’re at it."

5. Get creative with your money-maker

"It’s not all about saving – you’ve gotta be bringing in more moolah
too. I guarantee there are at least 50 ways that you could be making
more money right now...."

(As a matter of fact, one of the most valuable exercises I've ever done
was to make a list of 100 ways to
make money (legally!)
It really opens up your brain...)

The Parting Thought – Not to worry in the land of the free!

Dear Unconcerned Citizen…

The biggest threat to national security, privacy & freedom is our own government…

How the U.S. Government
Forged a Surveillance Society

The following article is from a past issue of the DeWeese Report. For more information and to subscribe click here.

On September 12, 2001, President George W. Bush invited members of Congress and the media for a meeting in the cabinet room of the White House. The mood was understandably anxious, somber: The World Trade Center lay in rubble, the Pentagon had a hole gouged into it and shock and awe had settled over the United States. One of the most extraordinary periods of American history – what would come to be known as the “Post 9-11 Era” – was beginning.

The president gravely laid out the situation and the steps his administration would take to secure the homeland, but during the course of the meeting he also made this significant declaration: “We will not allow this enemy to win the war by changing our way of life or restricting our freedoms.”

Those were heroic words of principle and patriotism in a traumatic time, but history would show that government’s reaction to the terrorist threat was the exact opposite than the protection of freedoms. Instead, government rushed in with a massive plan to create a surveillance society, intending to watch and document every action by the American people as a means of ultimate security.

FBI Tracks Your Transactions

The government is watching your purchases made with credit cards and even with store loyalty cards. They no longer need to get a warrant to do this thanks to more and more intrusive laws being passed in the name of national security. Some people argue that it doesn't really matter as long as you are not doing anything illegal. Others, including myself, feel that mistakes are often made by governments, and I prefer more privacy. First, Congress passed the Patriot Act, giving law enforcement powers to circumvent many Constitutional guarantees to personal privacy and home security. Then Congress created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The department immediately became an army of more than 170,000 employees by combining twenty two existing federal agencies, including the

Border Patrol, Coast Guard, Secret Service, FEMA, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Customs Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection, Federal Protective Service, FBI’s Computer Incident Response Center and several more lesser agencies of the same type. In the middle of this rush for security, Congress created the Transportation Security Agency (TSA). Also born in this Post 9/11 era were state fusion centers with the intention of combining federal, state and local law enforcement agencies into instant response teams, intending to eliminate bureaucratic overlap and red tape, in case of another terrorist attack or Hurricane Katrina-type disasters.
