Decoding Retailers' Price Tags

There actually is a method to retailers' price tag madness. At Costco, for example, prices that end in 97, 88, 00 are markdowns, whereas those ending in 49, 79 or 89 are manufacturers' specials. Here is a chart to decode various retailers' pricing policies including Gap, Old Navy, Home Depot, JCP, Office Depot, Sam's Club, Staples, and more. And here is more insight into Target's clearance pricing policies.

Growing tomatoes in a bra

Large tomatoes will require support. Tomato plants don’t have a very strong stem and usually bend (sometimes break) under the weight of the growing tomatoes - especially due to the larger tomatoes. Generally, “stakes” are used to provide some support to the stem so as to keep the tomatoes off the soil. The book goes a step further and suggests tying a used/worn-out bra between two stakes, in such a way that the cups supports large tomatoes.

Using diapers as water reservoirs for plants

This is again in the context of tomatoes (is tomato gardening so popular? - there are a lot of tips and tricks in the book about growing tomatoes). According to the book, you can reduce the frequency of watering tomato plants by placing the absorbent material from a disposable diaper underneath the soil, and then planting your tomato plant on the top. Whenever you water the the plant, some of the water will be absorbed by the soil and the rest will be absorbed by the diaper material. When the soil dries out, the roots can still suck up water from soaked diaper (scientifically, when the soil dries out, the soil itself sucks up the water from the diaper - which is analogous to how a candle wick draws up wax - by capillary action). This way you could probably get away with watering just a couple of times a week.

Here are 5 key ways from the PurposeFairy.com
I found to be invaluable in changing my relationship to money
and developing a 'prosperity' consciousness:

1. Change your mIndset (yes, it is the first step!)

"Money is just energy, and the longer you believe you
will never have it, the longer you’ll be stuck in this money rut.
Challenge your current perspective on money by filling in the
blank “Making money is _______”. Was your answer hard /
stressful / boring / etc? If yes, time to change that!
Fill in the blank with NEW word from the following options
– fun / exciting / easy.."

2. Stop spending money on frivolous things

"Every single time you pull out your wallet, ask yourself
“Is spending this money helping me get closer to my goal?”
If the answer is no, put it away and walk on by. Yes, it’ll
sting in the moment, but when you can finally invest in your
bigger life goals, you’ll be grateful you had
the willpower to say no when it mattered
.."

3. Start talking about what you want

"Put it at the forefront of your mind everyday. Tell everyone you
know. Talk to strangers about it. How could this possibly help
you with money? You never know. There just might be someone
out there who has connections to someone or something that c
an help you get it. The more you let the world know
you’re serious about asking it happen, the easier it is for
people to help you get what you want."

4. Make saving money a game

"Every time you say no to spending frivolously, keep track
of exactly how much money you saved, and put that exact
amount of cash in your “BIG DREAM” jar/account (you do have
one of those, don’t you?). As you watch your jar fill up, it becomes
more and more motivating to continue to save, knowing that you’re
saving for something that
really
matters. Toss your spare change in t
here while you’re at it."

5. Get creative with your money-maker

"It’s not all about saving – you’ve gotta be bringing in more moolah
too. I guarantee there are at least 50 ways that you could be making
more money right now...."

(As a matter of fact, one of the most valuable exercises I've ever done
was to make a list of 100 ways to
make money (legally!)
It really opens up your brain...)

Guilt by Dislike

Television programs and movies that glorify prosecutors and make every arrested person appear to be guilty have changed our justice system. In their book, Mistrial, Mark Geragos and Pat Harris explain how the standards for convicting a defendant have changed as a result of a cultural shift in attitudes. Now, to get a conviction, it is enough for a prosecutor to make the jurors dislike the defendant and to prove that the defendant acted oddly.

Dear Unconcerned Citizen…

The biggest threat to national security, privacy & freedom is our own government…

How the U.S. Government
Forged a Surveillance Society

The following article is from a past issue of the DeWeese Report. For more information and to subscribe click here.

On September 12, 2001, President George W. Bush invited members of Congress and the media for a meeting in the cabinet room of the White House. The mood was understandably anxious, somber: The World Trade Center lay in rubble, the Pentagon had a hole gouged into it and shock and awe had settled over the United States. One of the most extraordinary periods of American history – what would come to be known as the “Post 9-11 Era” – was beginning.

The president gravely laid out the situation and the steps his administration would take to secure the homeland, but during the course of the meeting he also made this significant declaration: “We will not allow this enemy to win the war by changing our way of life or restricting our freedoms.”

Those were heroic words of principle and patriotism in a traumatic time, but history would show that government’s reaction to the terrorist threat was the exact opposite than the protection of freedoms. Instead, government rushed in with a massive plan to create a surveillance society, intending to watch and document every action by the American people as a means of ultimate security.

FBI Tracks Your Transactions

The government is watching your purchases made with credit cards and even with store loyalty cards. They no longer need to get a warrant to do this thanks to more and more intrusive laws being passed in the name of national security. Some people argue that it doesn't really matter as long as you are not doing anything illegal. Others, including myself, feel that mistakes are often made by governments, and I prefer more privacy. This video describes some of what federal agents are doing with their...

First, Congress passed the Patriot Act, giving law enforcement powers to circumvent many Constitutional guarantees to personal privacy and home security. Then Congress created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The department immediately became an army of more than 170,000 employees by combining twenty two existing federal agencies, including the

Border Patrol, Coast Guard, Secret Service, FEMA, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Customs Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection, Federal Protective Service, FBI’s Computer Incident Response Center and several more lesser agencies of the same type. In the middle of this rush for security, Congress created the Transportation Security Agency (TSA). Also born in this Post 9/11 era were state fusion centers with the intention of combining federal, state and local law enforcement agencies into instant response teams, intending to eliminate bureaucratic overlap and red tape, in case of another terrorist attack or Hurricane Katrina-type disasters.

Who has access to your Social Security number, your bank information, and your tax records?

When Obamacare's health insurance exchanges open, your data could be exposed to shysters and hackers, thanks to serious vulnerabilities in the system.

The exchanges are scheduled to open on October 1 (just 53 days away). But the
list of implementation failures keeps growing, and the security of Americans' data is threatened.

THREAT #1: Obamacare "Navigators"

Navigators are a group of people and organizations that are going to be facilitating signups for Obamacare's insurance exchanges.

  • Example: Planned Parenthood has applied for navigator grants to work with consumers.
  • Danger: HHS will not require navigators to undergo "minimum eligibility criteria and background checks." The Administration's training program does not require navigators to participate in anti-fraud classes. And many states do not have plans for investigating unscrupulous navigators who may attempt to prey on vulnerable and unsuspecting Americans. Even California's Democratic insurance commissioner—a strong supporter of Obamacare—admitted "we can have a real disaster on our hands" if scam artists posing as navigators get access to applicants' Social Security numbers, bank accounts, and other personal information.

THREAT #2: Obamacare's Data Hub

The data hub is a massive compilation of tax filings, Social Security reports, and other government data that will be used to determine eligibility for subsidized insurance.

  • Insecure? The hub isn't scheduled to be certified as secure until September 30—only one day before the exchanges open for business.
  • Cutting Corners: The HHS inspector general recently released a report highlighting major delays in implementation of Obamacare's data hub. The report amplifies what former HHS officials have been saying for months: The Administration has been cutting corners on data privacy for the exchanges, raising major questions about whether the data on the hub can be certified as secure—or whether Obamacare will place Americans' tax and other personal information at risk.

The Obama Administration's shoddy, slapdash approach to Obamacare implementation is placing the sensitive personal data of millions of Americans at risk. It's one more reason why Congress should refuse to spend a single dime implementing this unfair, unworkable, and unpopular law.

Make your own little Bee Houses

Since the bee population is kind of on the decline with all the chemicals being used everywhere and whatnot, it's good to try and help them out with places to nest so that they can continue to pollinate your fruits and berries.

This is just a real easy project, great to put up around the house or even better, in the garden to attract those helpful bees. Really, the bees will nest in any holes that are in a safe and dry space, so this can be made from a wide range or scrap materials.

Materials: (suggested)

·         a few scrap boards/planks

·         a log or two

·         Nails and Hammer

·         Drill or Drill Press

·         Some kind of Chop, Miter, Slide, or Circulating Saw to cut the boards. A good hand saw, if that's all you have, will do.

·         Sand paper, if you want it to look nice

The Nanny State-We love our government

The Redistribution of Wealth to the Rich

The following is about the redistribution from the poor and middle class to the wealthy. There are at least a hundred ways this is accomplished, but just a dozen or so of the more important ways will be covered here. What lead me to do this research was the controversy of the 2008 presidential campaign after Obama made the political mistake of advocating "spreading the wealth around."

Of course, saying that seemed shocking to some, but what false outrage! Virtually all Republicans and Democrats alike believe in certain social programs that "spread the wealth." I didn't hear any of them advocating the dismantling of welfare, Medicaid or public education. These certainly help poorer people at the expense of the wealthier who pay most of our taxes.

It was called "socialism" when Obama advocated the same thing most Republicans believe in. Why? Because he advocated a bit more wealth be redistributed? That's not a principled argument. By the way, in 2000, complaining about the Bush tax cuts, McCain said...

The Folly of Celebrity Worship in the US

US Media a monument to Poor Taste…

I’ve long contended that I believe the end game of those Corporatists that run our world is a feudalistic state of affairs where they represent the “Nobility” of the Middle Ages. This theory of mine originally came about when I began to think about the mystifying rise of celebrities as cultural icons. The Kardashians, whatever it is that they do, certainly are among the most famous of today’s celebrities.

Many of these celebrities are notable not for their talent, but for their ability to manipulate public relations and the media. The Kardashians were not the first intimation that came to me about what I see is a trend to use subtle propaganda techniques to pave the way for full blown Medieval Feudalism. One of the first indications that came to mind was the TV program “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” The show’s host was Englishman Robin Leach. With his upper crust sounding English voice, actually a worked over Cockney dialect, he would breathlessly show the viewers sumptuous estates and introduce them to the wealthy celebrity wannabe’s who owned this monuments to poor taste.

The recent birth of the Royal baby in England and the round the clock coverage by CNN illustrates my point. Our news shows give us more “news” on the box office from this week’s movies, than it does about deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq. The “Cult of Celebrity” in my opinion is propaganda to pave the way for a feudal system where we the citizens spend our time thinking about the doings of our “betters”, rather than our responsibilities as citizens. When there is this absorption about the wealthy class and their lives, the fact that many escape their duplicitous deeds by being so wealthy, becomes and accepted reality. There is much evidence and little doubt that the recession of 2008 was brought about by illegal activity on the part of the financial community. Yet almost all of that community has escaped real criminal punishment for their deeds and when light prison sentences have been imposed, they spend their time is minimum security federal prison camps, with many of the comforts of home.

We and many of the industrialized nations are supposed to be Republics, not Monarchies and to my mind we are fast elevating our “entrepreneurial and entertainment” class into our new nobility. The reality is that there is little any of us can do about this except to try to expose it and hope people wake up. I think though that having won the “celebrity war” there is coming an expansion by our “elite” into making ones status in society’s hierarchy, into ones’ privilege under the law and I’ll explain further the signs of this that I see occurring right now. A Decline in Reading, Obsession w/ Cell Phones, Games & Video…

Ignorance in America is growing, it must be contagious.  It is fueling a citizenry who cannot read or think for themselves.  Little wonder why America seems to be singing its swan song…Curtis White

Despite spending more on public education than any other nation, America’s education system, once among the world’s best, has fallen on hard times. The latest evidence of this can be found in the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), an exam given every few years by the federal Department of Education to fourth, eighth, and 12th graders.

The latest results of this test show that only one third of American students exhibited proficiency in science and technology. Only three percent of students are classified as “advanced.” According to the Wall Street Journal, “[t]hirty-four percent of fourth-graders scored at or above proficient. Describing the life cycle of an organism is an example of a skill demonstrated by fourth graders at the proficient level. Thirty percent of eighth graders met the mark, by demonstrating, for example, that they could recognize plants produce their own food.” As students progress in age, it seems their knowledge declines, as only 21 percent of 12th grade students met the criteria sufficient to be considered proficient.

Out of 55 countries in an Urban Institute study of countries that succeed in improving academic achievement of low-income children, the U.S. ranked 36th, according to the Education Trust, a nonprofit that focuses on closing the gap.

Most studies indicate a rise in single parent families a major contributor to the decline in education, behavioral issues among youth…
