Cleaning Your Home Water System

I finally got our well system operating correctly and the pressure has returned to normal.  However, after being “idle” all winter, I see the system needs to be flushed and I’m adding a filter system.

It's a good idea to flush out your water system once or twice a year to ensure any untreated water that may have built up in your pipes or faucets is removed, preventing possible contamination. An annual flushing may also prolong the life of your pipes and faucets. We've compiled some tips for different parts of your water system:

Hot water faucets: Turn on all hot water faucets and allow to run for 15 minutes, unless your hot water tank is larger than 80 gallons--then run for 30 minutes.

Cold water faucets: Turn on the tap and run the water until it feels cold; keep running for at least a minute or two.

Dishwasher: After you've flushed your hot water faucets, run one cycle with an empty dishwasher. (Bonus: Your dishwasher will be cleaner, too!)

Refrigerators: Flush your refrigerator's water dispenser with at least one quart of clean water.

These flushing tips are especially helpful if your area has recently been under a boil order. If you're trying to troubleshoot a noisy faucet, a more thorough faucet line flushing may be in order. And for that, you may want to consult your faucet manufacturer, whether at a retail location or via the Internet. Different faucets will require different flushing procedures, as well as a varying supply list.

In some extreme cases, your well will need to be chlorinated to eliminate certain odors and bacteria. It’s not a particularly difficult chore, a bit time-consuming however.  Use this link to learn how:

Zip Ties in the Garden: Many folks I know are already in the habit of growing their own food. If not, they have plans to put in a garden immediately should the economy or our infrastructure take a turn for the worse. You can use zip ties in your garden to train your plants and increase production. Whether you want to give your tomatoes a little extra stability or teach your cucumbers to grow up a trellis instead of your fence, you can use zip ties to get the job done.

Survival Trapping in Urban Areas

As a trapper, you can set many traps and snares, all working for you simultaneously and for 24 hours every day. Regular checking of traps is crucial to minimize any suffering to the animal. Go for small prey, especially birds. All birds are edible, but some taste better than others

Different animals require different types of traps or snares. Observe the area to find out what kind of creatures are running around there. That means you need to know a little about what to look for.

Whether you are in a wilderness or urban survival situation, survival traps and snares could mean the difference between living and starving. Even if you’ve never hunted before there are a few simple guidelines that you should know.

Know something about the animal you are hunting

Learn how to build a trap

Be silent and don’t scare off the game

Trails

Animal or bird tracks

Scat or droppings

Burrows, nests or bedding sites

Watering holes and feeding grounds

In extreme situations (think WWII) people have been known to eat their horses, dogs and cats in order to feed their children to survive.  Here are two sites which offer useful information on trapping.

Using Mouthwash to do what!

Antiseptic mouthwash is designed to kill germs in your mouth and keep your teeth clean. It's those very properties that make mouthwash a perfect cleaner and disinfectant for other surfaces in your home too. So grab a bottle of Listerine and try these eight ideas for yourself!

Disinfect your toothbrush.
Wash your toothbrush with some antiseptic mouthwash every couple of days to ensure there is no lingering bacteria that could make you sick!

Clean the toilet.
All you need is half a cup of mouthwash. Just pour it in the toilet, swish it around with a toilet brush and flush! It'll kill the germs and shine the bowl in one fell swoop.

Clean grout and inhibit mold growth.
Dip an old toothbrush dipped in mouthwash to clean grout. It's also strong enough to cut easily through hard water stains and build-up. Just make sure you label that toothbrush for cleaning only!

Shine mirrors and handles.
Use a little on a lint free cloth to shine up mirrors and disinfect medicine cabinet handles, doorknobs, faucets and flush levers.

Clean television and computer screens.
A little alcohol based antiseptic mouthwash will clean dirt, grease and fingerprints off of those surfaces in short order.

Remove bacteria from laundry.
Add a cup of mouthwash to each load of laundry along with your detergent to kill those unwanted germs.

Banish a blemish.
Use a cotton swab to dab some mouthwash on the area, it'll kill the bacteria and clear up the blemish.

Disinfect a cut or scrape.
In the absence of antiseptic wipes or creams, mouthwash will clean and disinfect injuries in one step!

Tip: All of these tactics should only be attempted with a sugar-free, alcohol-based antiseptic mouthwash. At a few bucks a bottle, you can't go wrong!

Zip Ties can be used for Temporary Child Safety Locks: You can use zip ties to seal a cupboard or pantry door if you need to keep visiting children out of your cleaning chemicals or anything else you don't want them to get into. They make the perfect solution if you don't want to install child safety locks, but need a good way to secure a cupboard or two for a short period of time. Just loop the zip tie around two handles and pull it tight.

The Nanny State Updates…

Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency is using aerial drones to spy on farmers in Nebraska and Iowa. The surveillance came under scrutiny last week when Nebraska’s congressional delegation sent a joint letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

In fact, the EPA has absolutely zero authority and is an unconstitutional entity of an ever-expanding and rogue federal government. Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution does not authorize Congress to legislate in the area of the environment. Under the Tenth Amendment, this authority is granted to the states and their legislatures, not the federal government.

How To Boycott TSA
If you are uncomfortable dancing naked or being groped by TSA, there are ways to boycott them, avoiding the disturbing security theater.

How far would you go to avoid being sexually assaulted or having to dance naked in front of strangers? Boycotts have proven to be very effective at crippling immoral and corrupt government policies and practices. It might be effective to Boycott TSA in addition to suing TSA agents in their individual capacity.

Learn a practical alternative to TSA impropriety.

Use zip ties to Make Improvised Hinges: If you're building a fence with a gate, say for your garden, chicken coop, or dog run, you can use zip ties to make a functional hinge for your gate.

The Parting Thought –

Serious Insights-Is This the End?

If you're into delusion, you may not like this frank discussion of
the reality of the state of our financial system

“The sources of deflation are not a mystery. Deflation is in almost all cases a side effect of a collapse of aggregate demand - a drop in spending so severe that producers must cut prices on an ongoing basis in order to find buyers. Likewise, the economic effects of a deflationary episode, for the most part, are similar to those of any other sharp decline in aggregate spending - namely, recession, rising unemployment, and financial stress."

-Fed Chairman, Ben S. Bernanke

American voters need to wise up and pay attention to what is happening around the World. Europe is facing severe economic failure on many fronts and it will affect us.

Here are two very recent radio programs by two people who: a) can count, b) are immune to news media baloney and c) are willing to do the very heavy lifting of telling it like it is.

The first comments are from Karl Denninger, a former Internet entrepreneur (ISP) and now full time trader and commentator.

Denninger was one of the original founders of the Tea Party. He dropped out a month later when it became painfully obvious to him that the movement had been taken over by Republican Party hacks.

(The original purpose of the Tea Party was to call attention to and take action against massive frauds taking place on Wall Street that were being aided by the White House and Congress. Now Tea Party-elected “leaders” in Congress are among the leading enablers of Wall Street fraud thanks to well distributed campaign contributions.)

The second comments are from Richard Martin who is a financial advisor based in Singapore. I know less about his background, but he is consistently accurate and rigorous in analysis.

The issue is Deflation…

What is Deflation? Why is it coming? What will it look like? And what to do about it?

No one can predict the future, but deflation is at least as likely a scenario as the CNBS baloney that “recovery is right around the corner” and unlike the CNBS clowns, these two analysts have the numbers to back up their projections. (Source: Ken McCarthy)
