Getting Back Some Value for Your Tax Dollar
There are tens of thousands of free programs to help
you if you
are struggling with a problem or want to accomplish
some objective in life.
So before you spend money, borrow money, or not do anything
at all, first
check to see whether there is free help.
1. Receive up to $10,000 to train for a new career. If you have better
skills, you can get a better job, and employers will
have a stronger stock
of skilled candidates to choose from. This is why the
government offers you
up to $10,000 to take a few months off to sharpen your
computer skills,
learn to be a chef, or even get any specialized
training that will make you
more employable for the jobs available now.
If you think that specialized training will help you
get a better job,
contact your state One-Stop Labor Information Center
headquarters in your
state capitol, where someone can direct you to a local
office to explain
2. Land a job, thanks to the stimulus package. The people who have money to
spend are those who received stimulus funds. These are
government agencies,
contractors, and even subcontractors who are hiring
people, buying equipment
and supplies, looking for caterers for their parties,
or are flush to
donate to your charity.
To find out who received this money in your area,
contact the office of your
senator or representative or your governor’s office.

office and ask whether the agency has money to help
you accomplish some
goal, don’t take “no” for an answer. Government
offices are too big
for any one person to know everything available
through the office.
Get the documents, check the websites, and ask for
suggestions for
other sources. The best way to deal with the

professional financial
experts in 1,000 offices around the country. Either
call 800-569-
4287 or visit www.HUD.gov and search the phrase, “I
want to talk to a
housing counselor.”
• Free management consulting services to help you
start a business or work
on your invention from a network of professionals paid
for by government
grants. Visit www.sba.gov, and then click on “Small
Business Development
Centers” under the “Local Resources” tab.
• Free legal help from government regulatory offices
who fight for consumers
who have been treated badly by insurance companies,
contractors,
doctors, employers, merchants, and lawyers. Contact
your state government
operator, located in the state capitol, and ask who
regulates the
person who did you wrong. At www.llsdc.org/state-leg,
you’ll find a list
of state government operators.
Refinance your auto loan(s) with MoneyAisle.com, a website that allows
banks and credit unions to bid for your business by offering low APR
rates.

Whether they sell fries or office supplies, several chains offer free
Internet access at many (and sometimes all) locations. Here’s a partial list of
places that usually have free Wi-Fi…

Free Wi-Fi is well-documented online. Head to WiFiFreeSpot.com and you’ll find
state-by-state and city-by-city lists of locations, as well as categories of
hotspots such as airports, campgrounds, and chain stores.
Want Wi-Fi data mapped out? Try WeFi, which lets you punch in an address and pull
up the area with free Wi-Fi stores and hotspots marked. They also have an app for Android phones. All free.
There are security risks when using public Wi-Fi – check out OnGuardOnline.gov’s
tips for protecting yourself.
Even items with a “standby” setting, such as a
television Or a DVD player, can suck up energy.
Unplug these devices when you aren’t using them, or
plug a group of appliances
into a power strip for easy shut-off when you leave
the room, suggests

Slipping the Noose: Americans Are Learning to
Resist the Feds Quietly

Americans are learning how to beat the system, cheat the system, and
outfox the system. As the bureaucrats tighten their many nooses, Americans are
finding ways to slip the noose.
An article in Forbes offers examples. They are everywhere. Businesses
are just ignoring the rules. They hire lawyers to help them avoid the law. They
are fed up with the federal squid. They are not cooperating
This is significant for the future. The heart of every legal system is
legitimacy. If the government – family, church, or civil – is viewed as
legitimate, people who are under its jurisdiction cooperate. They add
self-government to external systems of sanctions. If they refuse to do this,
the government's enforcement system cannot force them to obey consistently. The
system does not have enough resources to enforce compliance.
The people who live under the regime think the regime is corrupt, they
cheat. They feel no guilt. If they think a law is immoral or stupid, they
refuse to cooperate. The government can do little to change this outlook, other
than shrink. No government does this voluntarily.
The federal government is now at the limit of enforcement. The
bureaucrats write 83,000 pages of new rules every year, yet the country changes
only slowly. The bureaucrats think they are in charge. They are not.
The Tea Party is a sign that the Feds have reached limits of
compliance. The harder the Feds push, the greater the resistance

"We follow
speed limits when we think they are being enforced only. Dads let their
teenaged kids drink beer. People cross the state line to buy fireworks, or any
good when the sales tax is lower. People on unemployment compensation stretch
it out so they can work on their eBay business.
"Retirees
buy discount drugs from Canada. Families share prescription antibiotics with
other family members for whom they have not been prescribed. A man with cancer
smokes marijuana even though he doesn't live in a medical marijuana state. When
we are driving at night and we come to a T in the road with a stop sign and
there is no one else around, we slow down and roll through the stop sign. We
eschew seatbelt laws when we take short safe jaunts up the block. We let our
kids do a little practice driving in the parking lot before they get their
learner's permit.
"We don't
recycle every time they tell us to. We top off the gas tank even though they
tell us not to. If they announce they are going to illegalize normal light
bulbs, we buy more, not less of them to stock up. If we think that gasoline
will kill the poison ivy better than some biodegradable eco-approved watered
down stuff, we use the gas. Even though certain states had anti-sodomy statutes
on the books up until just a few years ago, gay people had sex in their homes
all the time, and did not give a thought to the ordinances.
"Businesses
split in half so as to be qualified for small business exemptions from federal
regulation. Farmers look the other way when they hire day laborers who clearly
are not citizens. Federal regulators write their regulations, and financiers
change their form of organization in unforeseen ways to avoid the regulations,
even ones they pushed for.
"George Soros delists his hedge fund to avoid rules his
beneficiaries wrote. Businesses treat many regulations as cost of business and
just pay the fine rather than incur extreme costs. Factories and labs create
commonsense workarounds to arbitrary OSHA regulations .
"And most
people have absolutely no moral compunction about any of these violations of
the either the spirit or the letter of the law, because deep down they no
longer believe that the law, especially the tax code, represents any compelling
moral principle, nor do its dictates seem any longer to be fair. They don't
think their home state has earned taxes on the Amazon purchases or that it
deserves any share of the mutually beneficial exchange between you and your dry
wall guy.
"I bet you
can think of a few dozen more examples, and increasingly we're all in business
and in personal life thinking of more and more ways to game a system which we
have less and less faith in."
Editors Note: It’s been estimated goods and
services in America cost us on average 25% more due to over regulation and its
resulting higher insurance premiums paid for by US service providers and
manufacturers. This choking of the free
enterprise system is a threat not only to job creation but in reality, our
national security.
