America:  Designed by Geniuses…Enjoy Your Freedom

I especially like the 4th of July is because of what the holiday celebrates, which is our overall freedom. As Mrs. Poor Man Survivor will tell you, we’re pretty independent people [some might say stubborn]. I think that rules should be kept to a minimum. You should be free to live your life and make your decisions. I should have the same freedom for my life, and we should both respect each other's freedom. This is one of the main reasons I’ve always despised the mis-named Patriot Act, which eroded the Bill of Rights and our personal privacy…making us LESS Free!

For inspiration we watched the movie The Patriot which is loosely based on events and one of my boyhood heroes of that war, the Swamp Fox, Francis Marion.

The Patriot is a 2000 American epic historical fiction war film directed by Roland Emmerich, written by Robert Rodat, and starring Mel Gibson, Chris Cooper, Heath Ledger, and Jason Isaacs. The film mainly takes place in rural York County, South Carolina, and depicts the story of an American swept into the American Revolutionary War when his family is threatened. Benjamin Martin is a composite figure the scriptwriter claims is based on four factual figures from the American Revolutionary War, Andrew Pickens, Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan, and Thomas Sumter.

The Patriot is a grand epic full of action and emotion....But it's also surprisingly insightful in its evaluation of the American ideal—if not the reality.

Bill O’Reilly produced a series which portrayed a very historically accurate picture of our Founding Fathers and the events that led up to our war for Independence and it is something that should be taught in every American high school as it seems too few graduates today have a grasp of our history.

However I consider myself fortunate to live in the U.S. where that's still largely true to significant degree. It does seem that we have more and more rules, but according to the
Human Freedom Index, the U.S. ranks 23rd in freedom, something which continually drops each year. My hope and prayer is that we maintain that freedom.

I find it so ironic that many of the freedoms our founders fought for have gone by the wayside by the cretins who now run [ruin] our nation that I have little doubt few would recognize the nation today as something they fought for.

I know many of our returning veterans often wonder why they bothered fighting to preserve our freedoms only to see politicians whittle away at our Bill of Rights…perhaps someday these people will wake up and see what we’ve lost.  Think about this bumper sticker recently seen:

America: Designed by Geniuses; Run by Idiots.

Much like Orwell’s Big Brother in 1984, the government and its corporate spies now watch our every move.

Much like Huxley’s
A Brave New World, we are churning out a society of watchers who “have their liberties taken away from them, but … rather enjoy it, because they [are] distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing.”

Much like Atwood’s
The Handmaid’s Tale, the populace is now taught to “know their place and their duties, to understand that they have no real rights but will be protected up to a point if they conform, and to think so poorly of themselves that
they will accept their assigned fate and not rebel or run away.”

And in keeping with Philip K. Dick’s darkly prophetic vision of a dystopian police state—which became the basis for
Steven Spielberg’s futuristic thriller Minority Report which was released 15 years ago—we are now trapped into a world in which the government is all-seeing, all-knowing and all-powerful, and if you dare to step out of line, dark-clad police SWAT teams and pre-crime units will crack a few skulls to bring the populace under control.

Minority Report is set in the year 2054, but it could just as well have taken place in 2017.

Good citizens won't let these destructive government actions continue!

Yours for freedom,

 Bruce, the Poor Man!

You hit the nail on the head. Our Founders are rolling in their graves at how politicians have corrupted the good works they created beginning with the income tax and the so-called Patriot Act which essentially eliminated the Bill of Rights and those who enforce that piece of crap legislation should be ashamed of themselves as they are no patriots of this nation.

No doubt about it-the masses are deluded into thinking they still have a lot of freedom yet everything do is now controlled and regulated to the Nth degree by Big Brother and we're taxed to the hilt to pay for our own destruction...guess we are just the sheeple folks have talked about for years.

Couldn't have said it any better...everything our colonists fought for, our politicians have pretty much stripped away and I agree the Patriot Act is the most un=American piece of crap ever shoved done our collective throats and the sheep just loved it, giving up their freedom for the illusion of security. I've despised King George Bush ever since.
