We pay too little attention to the reserve power of the people to take care of themselves. We are too solicitous for government intervention, on the theory, first, that the people themselves are helpless, and second, that the government has superior capacity for action. Often times both of these conclusions are wrong.

RECOVERY AFTER A HURRICANE

Throughout the recovery period, it is important to monitor local radio or television reports and other media sources for information about where to get emergency housing, food, first aid, clothing, and financial assistance.

Here are some quick tips to keep in mind after the hurricane passes and the recovery begins:

  • Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates.
  • Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended.
  • If you have become separated from your family, use your family communications plan or contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS/1-800-733-2767 or visit the American Red Cross Safe and Well site: www.safeandwell.org
  • If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe
  • For those who have longer-term housing needs, FEMA offers several types of assistance, including services and grants to help people repair their homes and find replacement housing. Apply for assistance or search for information about housing rental resources
  • The emotional toll that disaster brings can sometimes be even more devastating than the financial strains of damage and loss of home, business or personal property. Be sure to understand the individual effects of a disaster, especially for those most at risk like children or the elderly.

Most federal assistance becomes available when the President of the United States declares a “Major Disaster” for the affected area at the request of a state governor. FEMA will provide information through the media and community outreach about federal assistance and how to apply through DisasterAssistance.gov.

What to do if you are ever caught in a crowd. Most people don't realize that people die in crowd mobs, not because they are trampled, but because of asphyxiation. The compounded force of just five people pressing against you is enough to kill you... and you can lose consciousness after being compressed like this for just thirty seconds.

PM’s Roundup of Useful Resources…

FIVE FREE TIPS FOR WHAT YOU CAN DO TO RAISE THE COST OF BEING SPIED ON

First, be aware you are being spied on and cognizant of some ways you leak personal information on the Internet and how to clean it up.

Second, you should already be using a VPN and Bitcoin so employ these principles and tactics to shift purchasing power to merchants that accept Bitcoin. Do not let firms like Stratfor compromise your personal information and render you increasingly vulnerable to identity theft.

Third, opt-out of unsolicited credit card offers. Get off their databases and away from these tracking devices. The borrower is servant to the lender, you are chained and naked with loan privacy disclosures, so avoid debt like you would avoid the plague.

Fourth, sign-up for the free How To Vanish email list and get the Free Privacy Guide. It has some extremely helpful and free tips for you to follow. Plus, you will get more tips on a regular basis.

Remember, spying costs money. Sure, they can print money out of thin air but eventually that privilege will come to an end. And with Bitcoin around that is likely to be sooner than before. Remember, using USD, EUR, Bitcoin, etc. is a political choice so opt for political privacy.

But even more than costing money it costs human resources to make any sense out of all the data. And the more human resources you can tie up following worthless and ineffectual trails the better. The more people who do this the higher the cost of spying exponentially rises while the return on investment, actionable or useful intelligence, gets lower and lower.

But why just stop with you taking control of your privacy?

Fifth, understand the force multiplier effect of encryption and share this post with your friends. Spark a discussion and show each other privacy protecting techniques. Plus, it is fun introducing James Bond techniques into your life. Delude yourself and pretend that you actually matter enough to someone else to be spied on

Rules for Self Defense Shooting

  1.  NEVER fire a warning shot.  Even if you shoot into the
ground, the bullet can ricochet up and kill an innocent
bystander - even a child inside a nearby house!

  2.  Shoot to stop the threat!  There's no other reason to
shoot someone and trying to "scare" or "wound" an
attacker only shows the court that you didn't feel your
very life was in immediate danger.

  3.  Know your legal responsibility!  You don't want to go
to prison just because you thought you were right -
only to find out you missed one of the "legal tests"
the court will use to determine if you acted
     responsibly

A Non-Traditional Roof Over Your Head
No matter how tightly you manage your finances, your single biggest expenditure is related to housing. But what if there was a way to reduce or eliminate the cost of renting or owning a home with non-traditional housing?

The safest, cheapest, and easiest way to scare off just about any home burglar is an air horn – one of those really loud, ear-splitting ones that you can find on eBay or your local hardware store or boating supply house.

The Nanny State-We love our government

Big Brother’s Prying Eyes

Welcome to The United States of Surveillance…

Whatever your take on the recent revelations about government spying on our phone calls and Internet activity, there’s no denying that Big Brother is bigger and less brotherly than we thought. What’s the resulting cost to our privacy — and more so, our democracy? Lawrence Lessig, professor of law and director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University and founder of Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, discusses the implications of our government’s actions, Edward Snowden’s role in leaking the information, and steps we must take to better protect our privacy.

“Snowden describes agents having the authority to pick and choose who they’re going to be following on the basis of their hunch about what makes sense and what doesn’t make sense. This is the worst of both worlds. We have a technology now that gives them access to everything, but a culture if again it’s true that encourages them to be as wide ranging as they can,” Lessig tells Bill. “The question is — are there protections or controls or counter technologies to make sure that when the government gets access to this information they can’t misuse it in all the ways that, you know, anybody who remembers Nixon believes and fears governments might use?”

Few are as knowledgeable about the impact of the Internet on our public and private lives as Lessig, who argues that government needs to protect American rights with the same determination and technological sophistication it uses to invade our privacy and root out terrorists.

Quick Bug-Out Tip
Put all of your papers... all of your photos... all of your financial documents, passwords, and important policies on a high-capacity gigabyte "flash drive."  A super-rugged flash drive made with up to 512 gigabytes of storage space, which should hold EVERY photo, movie, video, and piece of paper in your house.

The Parting Thought:

The FBI's Make-Believe War on Terrorism

There have been relatively few real terror attacks or even plots in the United States. But that doesn't mean there are not many "manufactured" plots. In his book, "The Terror Factory; Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terrorism," Trevor Aaronson gives a few examples of real plots (mostly unsuccessful), which in all cases involved terrorists with international connections and the ability to carry out the attacks on their own. Then he details the many FBI sting operations that have led to arrests, which almost universally involve defendants who had no capacity to act alone, no connection to real terrorists, and were encouraged, financed, and even led by FBI informants.

A good example is detailed in Chapter Five of Aaronson's book. James Cromitie worked stocking shelves in Walmart, and he had a history of mental instability. Shahed Hussain, a highly paid FBI informant (some make over $100,000 for entrapping a suspect), introduced himself under false pretenses and went to work encouraging Cromitie's bigotry and hatred, eventually suggesting that he take action against the enemies of Islam. Cromitie, meanwhile, lied about his past, claiming to have firebombed a police precinct and blowing up police cars. He seemed to enjoy the attention he was receiving. During this process Hussain had to leave for two months and he told Cromitie to spend the time recruiting others and to doing reconnaissance on possible targets. Instead, Cromitie spent the time working and watching television, never getting around to the important terrorist work he was so committed to.

When Hussain returned he told Cromitie that authorization for an attack was given by his "superiors," and that now they could teach people a lesson. Cromitie's response was, "Who are we teaching a lesson to?" Hussain had to explain that they were teaching a lesson to...

I used to discount some of what you write, but even the lame stream press is reporting this stuff too, so I guess none of us can ignore how the government is screwing us and bankrupting the country at the same time.
