DIY Cold Frame Enclosure

In agriculture and gardening, a cold frame is a transparent-roofed enclosure, built low to the ground, used to protect plants from adverse weather, primarily excessive cold or wet. The transparent top admits sunlight and prevents heat escape via convection that would otherwise occur, particularly at night. Essentially, a cold frame functions as a miniature greenhouse to extend the growing season.

Historically cold frames were built to be used in addition to a heated greenhouse. The name itself exemplifies the distinction between the warm greenhouse and the unheated cold frame. They were frequently built as part of the greenhouse's foundation brickwork along the southern wall (in northern latitudes). This allowed seeds to be germinated in the greenhouse and then easily moved to the attached cold frame to be "hardened-off"[1] before final planting outside.[2] Cold frames are similar to some enclosed hotbeds,[3] also called hotboxes. The difference is in the amount of heat generated inside. This is parallel to the way that some greenhouses are called "hothouses" to emphasize their higher temperature, achieved either by the solar effects alone or by auxiliary heating via a heater or HVAC system of some kind.

Cold frames are found in home gardens and in vegetable farming. They create microclimates that provide several degrees of air and soil temperature insulation, and shelter from wind. More at:

1. Become a member of the Freecycle Network. This nonprofit movement consists of more than 5,000 local groups — and some 9 million members — all around the world. It's all about keeping good stuff out of landfills by allowing members to give away items they no longer need as well as search for things they need that someone else might want to jettison. And it's all free, including membership. Prepare to live The Cheap Life in 2013.

2. Looking for a free weekend activity or maybe some fun stops during a family vacation? Consider touring factories and other businesses that offer free tours of their facilities — everything from chocolate and candle factories to breweries and the Spam Museum. Best of all, many offer free samples of their products as part of the tour.

If you want to leave virtually no trace of money that you need to get to someone, the mail can be a much more private option than using wire services or sending checks or using credit cards or PayPal. Everything other than cash leaves a clear trail that, more and more, government officials can access without even troubling themselves to get a warrant. So let's look at a few guidelines for safely sending cash through the mail.

1. Split large amounts up and mail it in several different envelopes.

2. Mail the envelopes from several locations.

Don't throw out your scratched CDs and DVDs!

First, carefully wash it in warm water to get rid of any debris. Gently rub some toothpaste on with your fingertips in a spiraling motion or back and forth from the center to the perimeter. After a minute or two, when you think you've buffed it out, let it sit for a while and then wash it off again and dry it with a microfiber cloth.

Ashley Warden was fined $2,500 after three-year-old Dillan pulled down his pants to urinate on his grandmother’s front yard. The police officer, Ken Qualls, was in his car at the end of the block when he spotted the young urinator. Qualls wasn’t fazed by the fact that the young toddler was on private property when the wetting occurred. “I said we are on our property and he said it’s in public view,” recalls Jennifer Warden, Dillan’s grandmother. Justice is flowing like a river for an Oklahoma mom. A Piedmont police officer was fired for writing an excessively hefty fine for her three-year-old’s “public urination” on the family’s property.

The origin of the term “Nanny State”: A care provider outside the intimacy of the immediate family whose interests are not aligned with parental tradition.

In stark contrast to the nation founded in 1776 on the principles of limited government and self-reliance, the current state has morphed into one of the greatest Nanny States the world has ever known. Forget the bread and circuses of Rome, modern America is Applebees and 60” LCDs broadcasting NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL games 24-7 in Bose surround sound. The people are kept fat and happy as the political class runs roughshod over their rights.

The Nanny State depends on a combination of bribery and a constant "gimme gimme" attitude from the adults it supports. It seeks to undermine the character of the sheep-like people who live within its borders — infantilizing them to a point where they are totally dependent through direct employment or subsidization. A total of eleven states now have more government employees and individuals on welfare than private sector workers. That means one fifth of American states have more parasites than producers.

Simultaneously, across the nation US Senator Dianne Feinstein is attempting to throw down a new era of gun prohibition that would absolutely dismantle the Bill of Rights, giving the federal government precedent to block your speech, outlaw home gardening, eliminate vaccine choice, outlaw home schooling and more:

The Parting Thought- Lifelong Politicians-the Scourge of America

Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the government take care of him had better take a closer look at the American Indian.” -Henry Ford --despite that there is an abundance of stupidity in America today…why else would they continue re-electing the same idiots into office?

A wise person once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Well, by that definition, the American people are insane - because we re-elect the same people over and over again and expect that this time it will be different. They will do right by us.

Here's yet another sign of what low regard we hold Congress in:

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll shows that just about half of those surveyed say that most Republicans and most Democrats in Congress are unethical.

The poll also shows only one-third of Americans approve of how the congressional leaders have handled their jobs.

Another poll by CBS news shows even worse results for party leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Only 11 percent have a favorable view of Pelosi; and eight percent for Reid.

Just 22% of members of Congress today have also served in the military — the lowest number since at least World War II.

What’s wrong with politicians today?

Sen. upChuck Schumer –D-New York, typifies what’s wrong with politics today and what’s wrong with voters.

-He’s never served in the military; slams our military at every turn

-Has never been responsible for a payroll

-Has never held a real job

-Made some of the most ignorant self serving statements I had ever heard after the Waco massacre by the government

-One of the most anti-gun and anti-Constitution leaders we have.

But the ignorant voters in his district have made him a lifelong politician and a lifelong irritant to conservative Americans.

Another example of lack of ethics - Insider Trading in Congress

Members of congress get to trade stocks on inside information, unlike anyone else in the country. CBS News reported on this last year, prompting Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's office to call the report a "right-wing smear" (Since when is CBS News a right wing outfit?). Here is a small excerpt from one interview on CBS:

Schweizer: For example insider trading on the stock market. If you are a member of Congress, those laws are deemed not to apply.

Kroft: So Congressman get a pass on insider trading?

Schweizer: They do. The fact is, if you sit on a healthcare committee and you know that Medicare, for example, is-- is considering not reimbursing for a certain drug that's market moving information. And if you can trade stock on-- off of that information and do so legally, that's a great profit making opportunity

Only in America could they have had the two people most responsible for their tax code, Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury Department and Charles Rangel, who once ran the Ways and Means Committee, and BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.

People can't figure out why so many millions of Americans have embraced socialism.

One only need look at the government's indoctrination centers called public schools and two private organizations: NEA (National Education Association and the NTA (National Teachers Association). Their toxic influence has helped usher along the ultimate goal of a Soviet America.

The Democratic Socialists of America boasted in a newsletter to insiders 70 of its members currently serve in Congress, but an independent survey by WND suggests the number of actual avowed or semi-secret socialists in the House and Senate is considerably higher – at least 82.

Q: How many members of the U.S. Congress are also registered Socialists?

A: Seventy in the 111th Congress.

Q: How many of the DSA members sit on the Judiciary Committee?

A: Eleven: John Conyers [Chairman of the Judiciary Committee], Tammy Baldwin, Jerrold Nadler, Luis Gutierrez, Melvin Watt, Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, Steve Cohen, Barbara Lee, Robert Wexler, Linda Sanchez [there are 23 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee of which eleven, almost half, are now members of the DSA].

More returning military veterans are beginning to question why the rights they’ve been ‘protecting’ are being whittled away at by politicians who’ve never served a day?

"I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts." -- Will Rogers

Char cloth: Char cloth is basically very thin pieces of charcoal made out of 100% cotton. It will take a spark almost immediately, burn hot, and burn quite awhile. Here’s a QUICK how-to guide to make your own.

Take a 100% cotton shirt, sheet, or any other piece of 100% cotton and cut it into 1 or 2 inch squares. Then, drop the cotton squares into a CLEAN tin can until it’s full & cover it with heavy aluminum foil. You can secure the aluminum foil with baling wire, but it’s not vital as long as the foil is on tight. Next, poke a small hole in the top of the foil and put the can into a pile of hot coals. Smoke should start coming out of the hole within a couple of minutes. This is smoke and methane and the smoke will be flammable (you can light it if you want). Within 5-10 minutes, the smoke should stop coming out of the hole. When this happens, take the tin can out of the coals and let it cool. When it’s cool, take the foil out and pull a square out. If it’s all ash, it means that air got into the can and you just need to try again. If not, then the cotton got hot without oxygen, turned black, you should be good to go! (This is how charcoal is made, and you essentially end up with small, thin pieces of charcoal) Take a piece, use a sparking device to throw a spark at it and play with your new toy

The skills you’ll develop making char cloth are a solid foundation for making charcoal AND for making a gassifier. In one of its easiest forms, a gassifier is a contraption that allows you to extract methane from wood and use it to run a generator.

As the cold weather firmly takes hold in most parts of the country, you might notice a steep spike in your utility bills as your heating system works to keep your house warm.

A collection of cases of number ten cans could be stacked and covered with an attractive cloth. A piece of plywood with a cloth could extend over the edges if you wanted foot room. Even a sheet of glass could be used for a table top, the boxed cans making a fairly sturdy stack. This could be done as a coffee table, game table, or even a dinner table.

A wall or corner of a room could be attractively “curtained”, or one of those zigzag room dividers stood up, and a stack placed behind it.

Adding a couple bricks under each foot of a bed can raise it enough that the cases of cans can fit under the bed. This allows for an enormous, normally untapped storage area.

Some people set up a limited selection of food storage just for the most extreme of emergencies. They have no intention of using it up and cycling it around. This kind of storage could be put in very awkward places such as under a house in the crawl space. Add some extra tape to the boxes and drag them under, (it is not called a “crawl space” for no reason). But remember that attics are much too hot for storage of this type.

The Nanny State Updates…

Isn’t it ironic that the biggest purveyor of gun violence is the US government…

A Cogent Argument Against Gun Control Make By...Anonymous?

The hacker activist group Anonymous has released a video, in its usually creepy fashion, warning Americans against allowing Washington, D.C. to impose gun control on the nation.

While the group is usually associated with more leftist movements, they have a strong anti-authoritarian streak in them, which explains the video.

Currently, thirty-five states do not provide access to information on people who have gun licenses, except to law enforcement. Some of the states where access to such information is permitted, are now moving toward restricting such access.

Information about when and where photographed subjects were when their pictures were taken is readily disclosed through photos taken, and the information is disclosed and distributed without their permission. The problem has become even worse due to the popularization of portable terminals with built-in cameras and developments in SNS and image search technologies. Three most important words to remember when being interrogated:  I don’t know!

The Parting Thought- Our bloated gov’t is a 800lb Gorilla on our Back

The Challenge of Understanding the American People

In December 2011, a Gallop poll indicated that Big Government was a bigger threat to 64% of the people than Big Business and Big Labor. A little more than one year later, a Washington Times poll shows that 60% of the citizens want stricter gun laws and bans on military-style weapons. The poll seems to indicate, according to Politico, that "the general public appears receptive to stronger federal action."

A CNN/Time poll, however, says that 61% of Americans say new stricter laws will not stop or prevent future mass shootings such as happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

So what is it? Do we want more centralized, stronger federal government or are we capable of policing ourselves on a state-by-state basis? Do we want stricter gun laws and curtailment of our Second Amendment rights or is it a futile exercise that will matter little in the long run? How can we be so cavalier with the freedoms we have in this country? I wonder, do we ever stop to listen to ourselves?

This is what I know. The rest of the Bill of Rights means little without the enforcement capability of the Second Amendment. The whole intent of the Second Amendment was to protect against a tyrannical government, not for hunting or sporting purposes. Even the Founders knew that the government they were forming also had the capacity for tyranny should elitists attempt to control through brute force and side-stepping the Constitution. Noah Webster wrote (when Pennsylvania was considering ratification of the Constitution) "Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States"

Hamilton, in Federalist 29: "...but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights..."

Tench Cox, Philadelphia Federal Gazette, 1789: "As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms."

The intent was to allow the people to be as equally armed as the standing armies of the government so that there was always maintained a balance of power. It wasn't about filling the freezer. And before anyone starts tossing red herrings about nuclear weapons and grenade launchers, save your breath. No reasonable Second Amendment advocate is pushing for that. This is about guns.

By the time this newsletter comes out, the 19th of January will have passed, which was a general call to all citizens to go to their state capitols and peacefully protest the attempts by our government to curtail our rights as free citizens. I hope you attended. I hope you made your feelings known.

The federal government has grown so bloated by its own excesses that it's no longer functional. Presidents’ side-step Congress and rule by executive order. Congress is derelict in their duty to perform the checks and balances needed to reign in dictatorial control by the executive and judicial branches.

We will not win this battle in Washington D.C. The fight for freedom lies in each individual state. We are learning to become independent of societal constructs, to provide for ourselves, and to take care of our families without having to rely on the government. That desire for independence must not be just a desire to divorce ourselves from the constraints and dependence of the infrastructure (because a government big enough to take freedom away is big enough to find you wherever you're at). Freedom also means controlling the behemoth of government so that it is not a threat to liberty at large.

We must decide what we want as a country. Is it more government oversight and control, or do we desire freedom? I leave you with the words of Patrick Henry, "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains or slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!"
