Your final backup plan should include…

It is the final backup plan for a lot of us in the case of a disaster. A generous supply of cold hard cash to buy our way out of trouble, pick up as many last-minute supplies as possible or to acquire resources that are unavailable to anyone with a credit card in a world where the electricity is out and the internet is down. We frequently talk about having cash for emergencies, but how much cash should you have if the grid goes down? What will you be able to purchase with your doomsday supply and how long would it last in the first place?

One of our readers made a recommendation the other day to have between $500 and $1000 in cash for your bug out bag and at the time it prompted me to consider again if this amount makes sense. In my personal preparedness plans I have a supply of cash but I am always trying to figure out if what I have is enough or too much. Will it even matter when TEOTWAWKI comes and how can I best use the cash I have to survive?

Why do you need to have cash on hand?

You want to know the time when you will need cash the most? It will be when you can’t get to it. How many of you right now have no cash at all in your wallets or purses? I used to be the same way. I never had cash and relied on the ready availability of cash machines or most often the ability to pay for virtually everything with a debit card. How convenient is it to never have to make change or worry if you have enough cash when with the swipe of a card your bank account funds are at your disposal. This is a great technological advance, but the problem is that this requires two things to be functioning. First, the card readers and ATM machines require electricity. If the electricity is out, neither of these two machines works. The second thing is a network connection. If the network is down, even with electricity the transaction won’t work and you can’t pay for goods or get cash from your bank.

In a disaster, one of the first casualties is electricity. This doesn’t have to be due to some cosmic solar flare that has rendered the grid useless, it could be as destructive and common as a fire, flood, earthquake, tornado or winter storm. It could also be from simple vandalism or perhaps terrorism. A major fiber optic cable was cut in Arizona back in February leaving businesses without the ability to accept payments. When the electricity is out, you aren’t going to be able to access your cash via the normal means so having a supply on hand is going to be a huge advantage for you in the right circumstances.

Even if there is no natural disaster, you are still at the mercy of your bank. What if your bank closes or there is a bank holiday declared because of some economic crisis. In any of these situations, if you are dependent on access to money that is controlled by either technology or physical limitations like a bank office it is wise to have a backup plan should either of those two conditions prevent you from getting cash.

What is cash good for in a crisis?

I think there are two levels to consider when it comes to keeping cash on hand. There is the bug out scenario mentioned above where you would have some “walking around money” to take care of relatively minor needs like food, a hotel or gas. The second is for a longer or more widespread unavailability of funds. Let’s say the economy tanks and the price of everything skyrockets but stores are still open for business. Your bank is one of the casualties, but you had a few thousand dollars of cash stored away that you could use to purchase food, gas and necessary preparedness items for your family. In this scenario, the government is still backing the fiat currency and vendors are still accepting it as a form of payment. For this scenario having a few thousand dollars makes sense.

But what if we have an extreme event where the currency is devalued and is essentially worthless? Your thousands of dollars might only buy you a loaf of bread. Don’t believe it can happen? It did to the Weimar Republic after WWI so it can happen again. That isn’t to say it will, but you should balance how much money you have squirreled away under your mattress with supplies you can purchase now that will last and keep you alive during that same event. My goal is to make sure I have the basics I need to survive at home for several months to a year without needing to spend any cash. This way, if the money is worthless, I still have what my family needs to survive.

If we have a regional disaster where you can bug out to a safer location, your cash should serve you well. Of course if you are in a safer location, assuming electricity was working your access to bank funds should still be working. If this is truly the end of the world as we know it, how long will that cash you have be worth anything?

How much cash do you need?

So the million dollar question is how much cash should you have if the grid goes down? I always try to plan for the worst case scenario. My rationale is that if I am prepared for the end of the world as we know it, I should be just as prepared for any lesser disaster or crisis I may be faced with. The way I see it is if we do have a disaster, you aren’t going to be using that cash most likely to pay your mortgage, student loans, rent, or your credit card bills. Cash will go to life saving supplies and this will need to be used in the earliest hours of any crisis before all of the goods are gone or the cash is worthless. Once people realize for example that the government has been temporarily destroyed, they aren’t going to want to take your $500 for a tank of gas. They are going to want guns, food or bullets.

Global take down of the American empire shifts into high gear

The U.S. dollar tanks under massive debt while the BRICS ready a new global currency

We are living in the last days of the American empire. The No. 1 weapon of the empire -- the US dollar -- has been targeted for termination by most of the other powerful nations across the planet, including China, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Russia.

The end result will be hyperinflation (of the prices of goods and service) combined with rapid devaluation of the dollar currency, which will ultimately go to zero.

I cover this in detail in today's article and interview with Dave Hodges of The Commonsense Show.

The Two Causes of the Coming Great Depression

How to Build the Ultimate SHTF Library

The human race is remarkably resilient. Throughout history we’ve survived wars, natural catastrophes, and yes, even pandemics. But that survival wasn’t without casualties based on location, circumstances or just bad luck.

But for many of the survivors there was another factor. The knowledge and awareness of how to make the right decision at the right time to not only survive events as they happened, but survive the aftermath sometimes lasting for years, decades and even a lifetime.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities that many survivors possess sometimes comes from experience, at other times upbringing, and mostly the determination to learn self-sufficiency, practice sustainability, and master basic survival skills...

Don’t Look Now-Chaos Is Being Unleashed All Over The World

The relative peace and tranquility that we had been enjoying for several months has been shattered.  All of a sudden, chaos is erupting all over the globe.  Rioters are setting fires in cities all over France, the IDF just conducted the largest military operation in the West Bank since 2002, and the Russians and the Ukrainians are both accusing one another of wanting to attack the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

If that facility is bombed, it could potentially cause a nuclear disaster far worse than the one that we witnessed at Chernobyl in 1986.  Unfortunately, I believe that global instability will be the norm throughout the remainder of 2023 and beyond.  Much more civil unrest and war are ahead, and that has very serious implications for every man, woman and child on the entire planet.

Personally, I have been absolutely stunned by the tremendous violence that has been taking place in France.  It is being reported that 5,662 vehicles have been set on fire during the rioting so far…

Ministry of the Interior figures taking account of damage to people and property during the now six nights of riots triggered by the shooting death by a police officer of an Algerian heritage teenager in a Paris suburb at a traffic stop reveals there have been 5,662 vehicle fires so far, reports Le Parisien.

The widespread destruction of vehicles, which as images recorded in the areas of unrest in France attest, include not just private cars but also trucks and buses. Trams have also been targeted by vandals. In one widely-reported case, a large truck was stolen by looters to ram down the doors of a mall to gain access to the merchandise inside. There were 1,919 vehicle fires on Thursday night alone.

France has seen a lot of riots in recent years, but nothing quite like this.

At least 1,000 buildings have been torched during these riots, and that includes 254 police stations

Damage has not by any means been limited to burnt-out cars and buses, however. As the government figures attest, at least 1,000 buildings have been damaged in the riots. This includes attacks on 254 police stations, as well as dozens of town halls, schools, post offices, and private commercial properties targeted for burning or looting.

The rioters have already caused a billion dollars in damage, and this crisis still isn’t over.

But this isn’t the biggest global story right now.

Over the past few days, the Israeli military has been conducting the most extensive military operation that we have witnessed in the West Bank since 2002

Over 1,000 IDF troops were involved in the campaign, which appeared to be the largest in the West Bank in some 20 years.

Speaking alongside Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Jenin “in the past two years had become a factory for terror. In the past two days, this ended.”

“We cut off the weapons manufacturing process, captured thousands of bombs, destroyed dozens of production sites, workshops and explosives labs,” he said.

The IDF is beginning to wrap up this campaign, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is warning that this was “not a one-time thing”

“At this moment we are completing the mission, and I can say our widescale action in Jenin is not a one-time thing,” Netanyahu said during a visit to the Salem checkpoint, some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from Jenin.

“We will continue [to operate] as necessary to root out terrorism. We will not allow Jenin to go back to being a hotbed of terror,” he added.

Tensions in the region have reached a boiling point, and it is just a matter of time before a major war erupts in the Middle East.

But this conflict in the West Bank is not the biggest global story right now either.

Americans Are Being Forced Out Into The Streets As The Middle Class Disintegrates

How many people will be sleeping in homeless shelters, on the streets or in their vehicles where you live tonight?  That is the sort of question that not a lot of us like to think about.  But the truth is that homelessness is growing at a very rapid pace all over the country right now.  But if you have lots of money, life probably seems pretty good to you at the moment.  You may eat at a different restaurant every night, and you may be one of the approximately 10 million Americans that currently own a second home.

Our leaders made the wealthy even wealthier by pumping trillions of dollars into the system in recent years, but as the cost of living has soared the poor have gotten even poorer and the middle class has steadily disintegrated.  So now the gap between the wealthy and the rest of the nation is larger than ever, and that is creating a tremendous amount of tension in our society.

During the early stages of this economic crisis, it will be the poor that are hit particularly hard, but great pain is eventually coming for those at the top of the food chain too.

Survival garden or greenhouse?

Poor Man Survival

Self Reliance tools for independent minded people…

ISSN 2161-5543

A Digest of Urban Survival Resources

Should you build a survival garden or greenhouse?

Charlie and Marie S., from Stockholm, Sweden, built a greenhouse around their home to keep the temperatures warm all year round.

The average temperature outside is around 27 degrees, but inside the greenhouse, it stays around 68 degrees.

So, not only does the greenhouse design help keep their house warm, but it’s ideal for gardening.

The couple grows food (such as cucumbers, grapes, tomatoes, and herbs) all year round thanks to the greenhouse.

This wouldn’t be possible in a normal Nordic winter.

Charlie and Marie started their unique home by buying a small, old, summer home in Stockholm.

Next, they spent $85,000 installing 4-millimeter-thick panes of glass around the house. The glass is rated for security protection so it shouldn’t break.

In addition to growing plenty of food, the family collects rainwater for household needs and for watering their indoor garden.

I’m all for gardening and being self-sufficient, but I don’t think I’d like to live in a glass bubble. But these folks have found something that works for them.

Now, both an outside garden and a greenhouse have benefits and drawbacks.

So, here are a few things to consider before you decide whether to build a greenhouse or simply a garden.

Benefits of an outside garden:

Aside from the natural beauty of an outdoor garden, they can attract pollinators from bees to birds, which can increase your crop yield.

An outside garden means there will be more space and room to rotate crops. Plus, you can use the best soil and move the garden if needed.

Finally, an outdoor garden is going to be the less expensive option.

You can make the garden as big or as small as you want, and you can always make the garden larger when funds allow.

Drawbacks to outdoor gardens:

The biggest drawback to outdoor gardens is Mother Nature. As much as gardens depend on nature they can just as easily be destroyed by it.

From frost to insect infestations, slugs to mildew, an outdoor garden can face challenges.

With an outdoor garden, it’s especially important to monitor the garden to minimize the damage or spread of destruction.

Benefits of a greenhouse:

The biggest advantage of a greenhouse is that you have control over the conditions in which your plants are grown.

For instance, greenhouses trap heat, helping to maintain a consistent temperature and prevent the plants from facing extreme heat or cold.

This also means a greenhouse can grow food year-round, so it can provide fresh produce all year.

Some plants grow well in humid environments, and a greenhouse lets you regulate humidity to help them grow.

Greenhouses protect your plants from pests, deer, rabbits, and bad weather.

Drawbacks to a greenhouse:

The biggest drawback to a greenhouse is the cost. If it’s a large structure, or has added features, it can be expensive.

Either way, a greenhouse will likely cost a few thousand dollars at least.

And there will be ongoing costs. For instance, you will need to account for heating, cooling, and irrigation systems.

Another thing is there could be zoning restrictions or permits needed to build a greenhouse.

So which option is best for you?

You need to consider your climate, space, and the food you want to grow.

If you live in a harsh environment, a greenhouse could be a better option.

Or if you live on a large piece of property, and have four seasons, then an outdoor garden could be better.

It will depend on your unique situation, but these tips should help you make a good decision.

However, if you don’t have the time or desire to build an outdoor garden or greenhouse, there’s still an easy way to get all the food you need.

Simply stock up on long-term, quality survival food.

You can start with a month’s worth and build up your supplies as finances allow or get a year’s worth in one shot. You have flexibility.
