How to Recycle Batteries
Lead acid led to the success of early recycling and today more than 97 percent of these batteries are recycled in the USA. The automotive industry should be given credit for having organized recycling early on. The recycling process is simple and 70 percent of the battery’s weight is reusable lead. As a result, over 50 percent of the lead supply comes from recycled batteries. Other battery types are not being returned as readily as lead acid, and several organizations are working on programs to make collection of spent batteries more convenient. Only 20 to 40 percent of cellular phone and consumer batteries are currently recycled.
The main objective for recycling batteries is to prevent hazardous materials from entering landfills. Lead acid and nickel-cadmium batteries are of special concern, and although Li-ion is less harmful, the aim is to include all batteries in the recycling programs. Do not store old lead acid batteries in households where children play. Simply touching the lead poles can be harmful. Read more about the Health Concerns with Batteries.
Even though they are environmentally unfriendly, lead acid batteries continue to hold a strong market niche. Wheeled mobility and UPS systems could not run as economically if it were not for this reliable battery. NiCd also continues to hold a critical position among rechargeable batteries. Large flooded NiCds start the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) of commercial airplanes and power sightseeing boats in rivers of larger cities, pollution-free.
Toxic batteries will continue to be with us for a while longer because we have no practical alternatives. There is nothing wrong in using these batteries as long as we properly dispose of them. Europe banned NiCds in consumer products because there is a suitable replacement, the NiMH battery. Controlling the disposal of NiCds from consumer products is difficult because many users do not know that the retiring equipment includes this battery. The long-term environmental damage if the world’s NiCds were improperly disposed of could be devastating.
Let’s look at what happens when NiCds are carelessly disposed of in landfills. The metallic cylinder of the cell eventually begins to corrode and the cadmium gradually dissolves, seeping into the water supply. Once such contamination begins, the authorities have few options to stop the carnage. Our oceans already show traces of cadmium (along with aspirin, penicillin and antidepressants) but scientists are not certain of its origin. Regulatory discipline will lead to a cleaner environment for the next generations. More (and plenty of related resources) at:

Privacy rights are under attack by the government
"The right to privacy
is the time-travel paradox of constitutional law: even though it didn't exist
as a constitutional doctrine until 1961, and didn't form the basis of a Supreme
Court ruling until 1965, it is in some respects the oldest constitutional right."

A
congressional panel has today began debating a law enforcement proposal which
would require wireless providers to record and store all of their customers'
text messages, Twitter direct messages, and Facebook direct messages in case
police decide, at some point in the future, to obtain them in the course of a

The
Parting Thought- Will the wizard save us?
‘If we look
upstream for the ultimate cause of the economic crisis, we find an illusion:
the belief that money – a mere number created with a simple accounting entry
that has no reality outside the human mind – is wealth.’
The Phantom Economy – is our
downfall by design?
The economic
meltdown has been a worldwide phenomenon…There is a reason that drones are flying over U.S. cities and farmland,
and gun control legislation is on the fast track for complete implementation…
I watched a
remake of the Wizard of OZ this week.
It was the prelude to the version we’re most familiar with and it
depicted how OZ came to be…many of this generation are unaware OZ was satire
showing how we all want stuff from Washington.
As long time readers know from me already, I believe there is no
difference between the two parties, each has screwed our country and the middle
class.
When the curtain
is pulled back to reveal the true agenda of a single digital world currency,
the people who have been yelling the loudest about such ‘conspiracy theories’
will be specifically singled out and demonized.
The recession hit middle
class Americans particularly hard.
Ignorant government trade policies favor foreign competition bringing
goods into the US while other countries penalize US exporters with stiff fees
and tariffs. Our government does
nothing. One must wonder if this and
other policies are deliberate and by design…
US tax policies favored
corporate off-shoring of US jobs since the mid-1980s led by General
Electric. Government policies also
favored Wall Street when it came to the decline in employee pensions and health
care plans, leaving only government jobs with better perks.
The average US worker
hasn’t had a real raise since 1982 when one factors in inflation. The Fed fuels inflation. Currently, it is pumping $40 billion a month
into the ‘economy’ to prop it up…one of the reasons the stock market has done
well during the last month or so.
What is wealth today – progress in terms of GDP growth – is
mainly based on a financial phantom. As a start, money is created as debt, out of nowhere, thin air, lent into
existence by the Federal Reserve. Once created money then searches the highest
return possible (that is: people and institutions who own money search for most
lucrative ways of investing). Because the financial industry has been able to
turn money into more money quicker than any other sector (not surprising given
it can create financial output with no material input) the financial industry has been mainly financing itself. Money going
round and round from banks to insurers to hedge funds to mortgage packages to
corporate loans to futures and derivatives, back to banks to insurers to … you
get the picture – has inflated our economic balloon with a whole lot of hot
air.
Consumers are always left holding the bag with Wall
Street collapses – think banks, investment houses, insurance giants and General
Motors.
High levels of credit card debt and home equity debt was
altogether too common in this country – if you could fog a mirror, you could
get a credit card. It’s exceptionally easy for someone to get in over their
heads, and payday loan/car title
loan shops prey on the financially weak. More and more Americans no longer maintain a
bank account, instead relying on Check Cashing stores to pay bills, send money,
etc.
Phantom economy
Let us examine the case of the underground economy, to see how this unfolds. The underground economy is growing in the USA and Europe as bartering makes a major comeback. America, like much of Europe, is becoming a high-cost of living nation thanks to inflation, over-regulation, taxes, natural disasters and other factors.
The late 1990s and 2000’s saw continued growth in the underground
economy principally centered on the smuggling of goods either banned or made
high in cost by the government (alcohol, tobacco, drugs). Government policies encourage the drug trade
for instance, while depleting national resources in their efforts to fight the
so-called ‘drug war.’
It seems to be a law of human nature that when governments outlaw some
aspect of behavior, it creates a ‘forbidden fruit’ syndrome, creating an even
higher consumer demand. This is already
happening with guns, ammunition, magazines and other parts…even the mere threat
of more useless regulation drives up demand and prices.
Preppers are routinely advised to stock up on such necessities as
alcohol, ammo, toiletries, etc. to use for barter and trade during times of
shortages. Excellent advice - most of us dislike using corn cobs.
Much like
several high-level source within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security outlined in a series of interviews last year, the orchestrated
collapse of the U.S. dollar and the entire world’s economic system has
begun. One must always wonder however,
who are those acting behind the scenes to manipulate the world economies and
for what purpose? I’m one of those who
are still curious as to how Obama came out of nowhere and managed to grab the
presidency – twice!
According to
recent information provided by sources within the Department of Homeland
Security known as “Rosebud,” the final preparations are being made to deploy
heavily armed federalized forces onto the streets of America. They will be
deployed under the pretext of “restoring and maintaining order from the chaos
brought about by the economic collapse,” adding that “many will demand and
embrace their deployment on the streets of America.
Meanwhile, the money

bureaucrats, labor unions, war pigs, and other organizations that couldn’t

thinks the government is protecting them while it is waging a war on the little
