Whenever
you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause
and reflect. Mark Twain
Moonlighting for Cash-Or Full Time Income
Gallup surveys
have found that a majority of Americans aren’t “engaged” with
their jobs, as defined as “those who are involved in, enthusiastic
about and committed to their work and workplace.” Almost 18% of
employees are in fact “actively disengaged”
from their jobs.
Most
of the jobs I held during my formative years were boring and tedious
and usually run by idiots. The one exception was the newspaper
industry. Most of superiors weren't too bright but my co-workers
were hard working and enjoyable and we spent many a Friday night
exchanging war stories at the local 'Deep Six' pub.
I
had written a short book showing my newspaper advertisers how to
knock the socks off their competitors in terms of what became known
as 'mercenary marketing' methods and at my own expense printed up
100s of copies and gave them away. My personal sales increased as
did my reputation. The local chamber asked me to conduct a workshop
showing retailers how to use these strategies and one of staff
writers wrote a story about its success.
The
honchos at who ran our chain of papers didn't find favor with this
and threatened to fire me despite having the best sales record among
their staff. I beat them to the punch and quit.
To
make a long story short, my little marketing manual continually
evolved and expanded to become a 350-page manual which was updated
annually. I added a newsletter and a software program and went on a
speaking and seminar program and became a marketing lecturer at a
local university and a syndicated small business columnist and
eventually owned several business journals in Ohio.
What
started as a sideline or moonlighting venture became a full time,
profitable venture in pre-internet days. Given the volatile nature
of today's job market I've long suggested that folks should develop
side gigs or moonlighting ventures to earn extra cash. With the
advent of social media and the internet there are now many more ways
to promote a sideline gig and there a variety of inexpensive [under
$20] direct sales opportunities such as: JewelyInCandles.com,
LinenWorld.com or EndlessExpressions.com – a few that I ran across
recently.
Even though you might be tempted to,
you don’t necessarily need to quit your day job as soon as you get
an idea for a side business. In fact, in can be beneficial to take
things slow and build up your biz step-by-step, before making the
leap.
