The Sex Robot Revolution is Approaching Says Study
According to a
story in the New York Post…
Doing the
robot no longer refers to a dance move.
YouGov, an internet based market research firm, found that 49% of
American adults believe that having sex with robots will become common practice
within the next 50 years. The study
surveyed 1,146 adults ages 18 and up, found that only 9 percent of women would
consider having sex with a robot.
However, one in four men like the idea.
The appearance of the robot was an important factor for both men and women
as it was essential for the robot to resemble a human.
Robot-romping
could be the next step in replacing prostitutes, guaranteeing safety and health
concerns and it sure sounds like something out of sci-fi’s Westworld.
Anthropomorphic,
hyper-sexualized robots are no longer just the stuff of science-fiction fantasies.
In fact, mechanical lovers are becoming increasingly realistic and
technologically advanced, so much so that
Dr. Ian Pearson, a futurist known for his 85% accuracy record, guesses
that, by 2050, sex with robots will be
more common than human love-making.
The latest
attempt to create a realistic 'sex robot' - a robot designed to mimic a human
and be used for sex - has hit the market, and any robotically-inclined people
with $7,000 or more to spare can pick up 'Roxxxy'. Roxxxy is
less a full robot than a large, expensive sex toy but as robotic and computer
technology progresses it must only be a matter of time until a realistic sex
robot is developed. What are the ethics of having a sex robot if the robot has
artificial intelligence? Can a robot consent?
In Michael Crichton’s HBO Westworld reboot — which aired on HBO
last October — it unleashed on a very different society. The sex
robots causing mayhem in the show’s futuristic wild-west theme park are
already very real
— and, just as Crichton’s original film imagined, we humans are having a hard
time figuring out how
to deal with — let alone keep up with — our sexy robot “hosts.”
Here’s
the crucial implication in Westworld: Sex with robots is good. Almost too
good. Now that we’re discovering this to be true IRL, some scientists have
become especially concerned that we might all dive right into a real-life
Westworld, given the chance. In an interview with Metro UK, robotics expert John Snell of Iowa’s Kirkwood
College argued that robot sex could become so refined that it becomes more
appealing than human sex. “Because they would be programmable,” he explained,
“sexbots would meet each individual user’s needs.”

Visions of robot bordellos,
minus the western trappings, were described by researchers at the University of
Victoria Management School in a seminal paper entitled “Robots, Men, and Sex Tourism.”
Predicting that Amsterdam’s red light district will be filled with android
prostitutes, not people, the researchers argue that the futuristic brothels
they imagine could become a reality by 2050.
The latest
research from YouGov shows that the use of sex robots poses a moral conundrum
to most Americans. While few have any problem with masturbation in general
(only 17% of Americans say that masturbating is morally wrong), 43% of
Americans say that using sex robots is morally wrong. 39% say that using a sex
robot is morally acceptable, with men (46%) and Democrats (46%) the most likely
to say it's acceptable and over-65s (35%) the least.
Despite
recent articles expressing the possibility that sex robots could be easily
infiltrated by hackers and programmed for more violent means like murder or
assault, 42% of US adults feel that getting it on with a robot would ultimately
be safer than hooking up with a human stranger.
The world’s
first news-reading android reported on an earthquake and an FBI raid in
Tokyo on June 24th, 2014. The pair of remarkably realistic humanoid robots
include a child (kodomoroid) that can recite reports gathered from around the
world in a variety of voices and languages, and an adult woman (otonaroid) who
will serve as a robot science communicator for Japan’s museum of emerging
science and innovation.

I watched that sex scene on HBOs Westworld-it was hot and probably portends the near future...makes me wonder how laws will have to change in order to accommodate reality. Sex with non-humans wouldn't violate laws as we know them. You've presented a very interesting series on robotics and its growing challenges to our society.
I run into people everyday who act more like robots than humans...I wonder?!
