An inside look at what all preppers say they never want to be caught without…

According to a recent Forbes headline, ‘Cyberattacks Against the US Here to Stay’. In just the last few weeks we've seen a petroleum pipeline shutdown cause gas lines and a shutdown of one of the few meat processing plants. It appears that it's not over yet.

While I never like panic responses, I do think that it's wise to be prepared. Especially, when we're likely to see more of the same. One way to be prepared is to have an inventory of needed items.

For instance, who doesn't remember last year when we had the brief toilet paper shortage. It was no big deal in my house. We always try to have extra essentials on hand. We stock up when the item is on sale so we don't end up making special trips to the store because we ran out. I didn't anticipate the shortage, but the inventory made it a non-event.

Given the possibility (probability?) of more hacks on essential services, it's a good idea to stock up on some essentials. To make sure you could ride out a week or two without buying whatever is in short supply.

Of course, we've always been a fan of stocking up when prices are cheap. How a Full Pantry Saves You Money explains…

I’ll give you an inside look at what all preppers say they never want to be caught without.

#1: Food Supply of 2 Weeks
Note that this is per person, not for the entire house! The best way to store 2 weeks of food is by using Freeze Dried baggies stored in water-proof buckets. Here’s my personal favorite.

I recommended
Valley Food Storage Meals or 4Patriots as they can last up to 25 years. Their ingredients are also real and I know exactly what I’m eating. Now that’s a smart investment if I’ve ever heard one!

#2: Water Supply of 3 Days
Individuals need at least 3 gallons of water stored for survival needs including drinking and sanitation.

#3: First Aid Kit
Okay, this one is hopefully a no-brainer. Find a first aid kit full of bandages, aspirin, tweezers, and more.

#4: Flash Light, Radio/TV, and Batteries
Even with cell phones, it is still recommended to have a traditional flashlight and a radio with enough backup batteries.

Food preservation is one of the most important skills you can have. It helps you save money and eat more healthy local food. You can also use it to stock up on food for emergencies, survival scenarios, or just hard times.

If you’ve decided to preserve your own food, you might be having trouble deciding which methods to use. Before we get into specific methods, let's talk about the benefits of dehydrating food.

Dehydration is actually one of the oldest methods of food preservation. It was used by many different cultures as a way to put up their harvest long before canning jars or freezers were even invented. Today it remains one of the best methods, and for several reasons...

This list of 100 items to disappear first has been passed around the Internet for a while and it’s a great guide. I recommend printing it so you can fold it up and put it in your wallet. Then when you’re out and about at flea markets, dollar stores, secondhand stores or wherever you end up, look it over and keep an eye out for good deals.

You’ll be amazed at what you can find for only a few bucks. And odds are, most of these things will be priceless after a major disaster.

1.   Generators. - Good ones cost a lot. They’re noisy, a target for thieves, require maintenance, etc.

SIDEBAR

This weekend we installed our 3rd hot water tank at our cabin. We had a Rheems brand for the first two time and neither one lasted four years...this time we're trying something different-a waterless heater which is smaller [opened up a ton of closet space] and according to reviews, it will save up to 60% on its utility charges.

Dreams become goals, goals become reality, reality becomes a dream come true.
- Unknown Author

Frequently, I get questions from readers about prepping in an urban environment. I understand the limitations: Most people living in America’s cities heavily rely on infrastructure (water, power, sanitation)… space is at a premium, which makes it difficult to stock ample supplies… and keeping your emergency plans to yourself can be challenging with so many people living on top of one another.

So here’s some great advice if you’re an urban dweller looking to prep. This article offers five things you can do to make yourself an asset to your neighbors in the event of an emergency.

As this piece mentions, in more densely populated areas, cooperation is an essential virtue when it comes to surviving a crisis. So be a good neighbor and click on the link above.

According to this piece originally published on dengarden.com, a well-tended 400-square-foot garden will feed a family of four. Not to mention fresh fruits and vegetables from your garden will be a great addition to your emergency food stores in a crisis situation.

In this article, you’ll learn:
  • How to grow produce from seeds as well as how to start a plant from a clipping
  • Four ways to keep deer from eating all your hard work and no less than 13 natural ways to control bugs and insects
  • Why canning is the preferred method of storing your garden veggies — especially if the SHTF
  • Three household items you can use as mulch
  • And how to harvest and make use of rainwater.

It’s not too late to start a garden this year, so check out these expert tips and tricks and get planting!

Has it become harder to put meat, veggies and milk into your grocery cart because of ever-increasing food prices? It is still possible to serve your family healthy foods on an affordable budget. Read more.

Recipe for Homemade Cleaner:

I put about 1/4 cup of baking soda in a small glass bowl and squirt in hydrogen peroxide until it makes a nice paste.  Then I rub it on the offending dirt/stain/grease…whatever!  I usually just use my fingers…but I also use a small sponge at times as well.

Or…

Glass Cleaner Ingredients

·         2 cups of water (distilled or filtered is best so it doesn’t leave residue)

·         2 tablespoons vinegar

·         10 drops essential oil of choice- I use lemon (optional- but it helps cut the vinegar smell)

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle (preferably glass) and use as needed to clean window. I like to use a microfiber cloth to wipe windows clean with this recipe.

Note:  If you have always used commercial window cleaner in the past, mix a couple drops of liquid castille soap or liquid dish soap in some of this mixture the first time you clean the windows to remove detergent residue.
