Did you know that ChatGPT and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a
"doomsday" prepper with a stash of gold, guns, and gas masks?
That's the headline, anyway.
The truth is that mainstream America is gradually beginning to
embrace the need for preparations from natural disasters and international
threats that have become increasingly frequent and devastating. This is good
news — but there's a lot more to be done. And an "apocalypse" isn't
the reason to be prepared.
According to research published by Pete Riley, senior scientist at
Predictive Science in San Diego, Calif., in Space Weather, there was about a
one in eight chance that the Earth would be hit by a massive solar mega-storm
last decade. The event did not happen… but we know statistically that means
it's merely more likely to happen now with every passing year. Such a storm
would likely fry electrical components and cause trillions of dollars in
damage.
Solar flares are caused because the sun goes through an 11-year
cycle of increased and decreased activity. During solar maximum, sunspots and
enormous magnetic whirlwinds erupt from its surface. Sometimes, the flares
burst outward from the sun, spewing a mass of charged particles out into space.
The biggest solar event ever to affect Earth, the Carrington
Event, occurred in 1859. Astronomer Richard Carrington watched an enormous
solar flare erupt from the sun's surface, emitting a particle stream at the
Earth traveling more than 4 million miles per hour. When the energy reached the
Earth's atmosphere, the particles generated the intense ghostly ribbons of
light known as auroras.
Livescience.com tells us "The colorful displays were so
bright that people in Missouri could read by the atmospheric light after
midnight, according to an 1859 report in the Weekly West newspaper. Gold miners
in the Rocky Mountains woke up and made coffee, bacon and eggs at 1 a.m. local
time, thinking the sun had risen on a cloudy morning, according to the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)."
Sparks flew from telegraph machines in Paris, and operators in
D.C. got massive electrical shocks.
A 2008 report conducted by the National Research Council concluded
that in today's electronic world a similar event could spark: "disruption
of the transportation, communication, banking, and finance systems, and
government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing
to pump failure; and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of
lack of refrigeration."
That's merely one scenario. There are hundreds of others I do not
need to conjure up for your imagination. The good news is that with warmer
months just around the corner, you're entering the best time of the year to
begin getting ready to mix your preparedness planning with outdoor recreation
activities.
Prepping involves a great deal of serious business, to the extent
it includes gathering the skills and supplies to help you and your loved ones
survive anything. But that doesn't mean all of your prepping activities should
center around the drudgery of filling supply rooms and bugout bags.
The potential for danger to your life, financial security and
family's well-being is everywhere. That reality, of course, shouldn't consume
you… what a miserable life that would create. But would it hurt to take some
small steps to protect yourself and your loved ones against uncertainty? Of
course not.
You can learn a lot about your ability to handle real-world
survival situations by taking on activities that you may not associate with
prepping. Taking a walk through your city on a spring day or spending some
leisure time in the woods affords you an opportunity to look at the world with
a preparatory mindset. If you're serious about situational awareness, this is
probably something you already do. If not, now is a good time to start.
In the city, think about which routes, whether on foot or in a
vehicle, would allow you to best make it to safety in the event of a natural or
man-made emergency. Where do you expect panicked masses to flee, clogging up
streets and walkways? Are there alternative routes? Would you be best off
traveling away from the danger by foot or in a vehicle?
In rural settings, there are even more ways to hone your skills
during leisure time. Expert Gaye Levy suggests that the next time you go on a
camping trip, for example, you take a pencil and notepad with you and write
down some of your observations on what you need to do differently when it comes
to your emergency supplies.
Another great way to enjoy the weather while becoming a more
proficient prepper is spending time in the woods learning to identify different
varieties of plants that could help you survive an emergency situation.
Spring is also an excellent time to brush up on your target
practice, which will give you a hunting edge in the event of a long-term
emergency that requires you to find your own food.
The thought of the alternative — facing a real natural or man-made
disaster with no food and no hope of getting any for weeks — should cause much
more heartburn than the idea of spending a few hours and a few dollars on a
self-made insurance policy that could mean the difference between life and
death.

Modern gunfighting skills have not changed too much in the past decades as far as standards of safe gun handling and points of marksmanship.
There are leaders in the
firearms industry who set the standards of exceptional training. Some people
are fortunate to have trained with these individuals and share their knowledge
throughout the country. Be wary of instructors that modify these techniques and
believe that they are being innovative with their own style or interpretation.
Avoid instructors who rely on YouTube for training."
Those luxury super-bunkers and massive hideouts stocked like Sam
Altman's are out of reach for most of us, but also unnecessary if you simply
start working and keep at practically preparing for potential disruptions in
civil order or natural disaster.

How To Make Emergency Ration Bars
