Are Excessive Body Piercings & Tattoos Signs of Tribalism?

   This past Friday’s segment of Ancient Aliens [I’m a fan] featured a short history of body art among various nations and tribes ranging from elongated skulls and necks to highly stylized body art and piercings dating back to prehistory.

Where I grew up excessive tattoos were associated with circus performers, gangs and prison inmates.  Tattoos are excessively used among Hispanic gang members, Russian mobsters and the Japanese underworld.  Of course, excessive body art has gone mainstream even among women who went from dainty, unobtrusive tattoos to full sleeve markings.

My deadbeat brother-in-law [who has never worked in his adult life] is an example. His body is covered in piercings, tattoos and body jewelry.  At a Thanksgiving dinner one year my son, who was eight at the time, whispered into my ear “Dad, what’s wrong with B___?”  I wasn’t sure how to respond.

Another show I enjoy [except for the overuse of the word ‘awesome,’] is American Pickers.  One of the people featured in each episode is the office manager, Danielle.  I used to find her somewhat attractive but over the years she’s added so much body art, even to her knuckles, and her chest area has been glossed over with some kind of yellowness that she appears to have jaundice.  I find it repulsive and often wonder why people need to go overboard to the point of distraction.

With my background in cultural anthropology I’ve long associated excessive tattooing with tribalism and now think today’s generation is doing the same.

I have an unconfirmed, un-scientific theory that as a rule, the more excessive the tattoos a person has, the more likely they identify with being a progressive/socialist.  The more conservative or religious one is, the less likely you are to find a lot of body art.  Of course, life is like the English language in that there is an exception to every rule…I have some ex-military friends who sport large amounts of tattoos…however, when I served, our CO warned us NOT to get them.  As he put it, “what’s the first thing every cop asks for when compiling a file on a suspect or fugitive-Any known identifying body marks?”

Finally, one of our single friends who uses online dating sites has remarked how he automatically deletes any candidate with obvious, excessive tats or piercings…

Conservative victories

This past week, millions of voters went to the polls to vote on state and local races and a slew of ballot measures. There were some important conservative victories worth noting.

→ Colorado taxpayers rejoice: Liberal big spenders pushed a measure that would have allowed the state government to keep excess tax funds it collected – in violation of the state’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Thankfully, voters rejected it and told the government to send the money back where it belongs – with taxpayers.

→ Common sense on immigration: A resounding majority of Tucson voters – 71% of them – rejected a measure that would make Tucson a sanctuary city. In blue New Jersey, Sussex County residents voted to support federal immigration officials in the state.

→ No taxes in Texas: Texans supported a constitutional amendment this week to make it even more difficult for lawmakers to impose a statewide income tax in the future.

When Prepping Becomes Survival : 

Overlooked Skills - Equipment For Extreme Emergencies

It is an interesting phenomenon that very often people perceive prepping and survival as completely different categories; readers might even have seen that distinction on various websites they’ve browsed. That perception can create gaps in various emergency situations, however. The “prepper” can become a hoarder, sometimes assuming that all emergencies are of the slow-decline variety where one needs only to ride out economic hardship or a literal passing storm. On the other end, the “survivalist” can become the lone wolf ready at the first sign of chaos to be equipped for full-on combat, but perhaps not so well-equipped to shelter in place where community building becomes a central component of best dealing with a stressful situation.

Sure, these are generalizations, but I’ve met enough of my share of both types of people to conclude that we would do well to address these potential shortcomings in our evaluation about how ready we truly are for the widest range of potential emergencies.

Overall, I personally like the term “Self Sufficiency” to describe an adaptive mindset that is best for any short-term emergency or longer-term disaster scenarios. To illustrate this approach and what is often required of the human beings that endure such hardship, let’s reflect on two recent events that highlight the importance of having the skills and equipment from both prepper and survivalist camps in order to best ensure our safety, especially when unexpected details can evade even the most judicious among us.

Hurricane Harvey

The sheer physicality of a disaster like Hurricane Harvey is one that put even hardened preppers and survivalists to the test.  The historic rainfall and scale quickly overwhelmed the ability for the government to be relied upon as a source of rescue or refuge. Moreover, the duration of the impact offers a glimpse into what might be required for even longer-term disaster scenarios – environmental, war-related, terrorism, or even viral outbreak.

The need to evacuate quickly is something that is often overlooked; or if it isn’t, it’s assumed that it will be directed in some orderly fashion by town officials. This was not always the case during Hurricane Harvey.  Floods can happen nearly anywhere, but the people of Texas learned that it wasn’t only the water, but what the water carries along with it that can provide some overlooked potential threats – like snakes, alligators, and fire ants. People who had boats were able to help themselves and others, while staying a step removed from the hazards that could lie beneath. This doesn’t have to be expensive either – an inflatable boat or raft is certainly preferable than the risk of attempting to drive or walk out of flooding areas.

While it is also clearly important to have a go-bag at the ready for each family member that contains provisions, first aid supplies, and weapons if possible, it’s often overlooked that the water is filled with contaminants. Products that can effectively provide chemical decontamination need to be quick, ready to use and available in home, go-bags and vehicles.

The aftermath of a storm like Harvey can be even more challenging than surviving the initial onslaught. Reports of injuries, infections, mosquitoes and mold infestation gripped those who were left amid the remains and had to begin rebuilding in deplorable conditions.

It’s also worth mentioning that collapse survival does not have to be a solitary endeavor. There were certainly many reports of communities spontaneously coming together to gather provisions and provide some order amid the chaos. In fact, people’s generosity is most often on display during emergencies, but it is too often overlooked that much of the panic can be alleviated by forming your tribe ahead of time; whether that be a core group of family and friends who are all equally stocked and prepared, or even better to have your entire neighborhood on board with disaster preparation and survival. Such community organization can ironically be a key component of true self-sufficiency.

And don’t forget to develop proper contingency plans for your animals! There were too many horrific reports of stranded or abandoned animals that could have been saved with better preparation.

Lastly, a disaster of this scale can even disrupt communications. Here is an interesting home-made item that is probably not in the average prepper’s arsenal: the “Cantenna” – check out how a router and a Pringles can might just be a hidden gem to have in your community.

Ongoing Economic Collapse of Venezuela

Most people have not lived through a true economic collapse of any duration. A stock market drop of 1,000 points does not constitute a true emergency despite how ugly it might look on paper for your portfolio. If you want a real look at how bad it can get – quickly – I would point you to an ongoing series written by a man named Jose Martinez who is documenting his experiences during the widespread social and economic collapse in Venezuela. It’s a harrowing account that perfectly illustrates some of the overlooked skills and equipment that need to be employed as one shifts gears from prepping to survival.

Jose describes himself as a well-educated, middle-class, and a fairly recent adherent to the prepping mindset. His prepping began in earnest with news that his first child was on the way. It was at this point that he began to consider the various life emergencies that could erupt. What if the car breaks down? What if the electricity temporarily fails? Such considerations led him to have a decent stockpile of food and basic first aid supplies, as well as a generator.  These were the concerns of someone who identified a need to be self-sufficient and was taking action to become prepared for any basic inconveniences that might affect his ability to provide for his family.

However, it was becoming more apparent to him toward the end of Hugo Chavez’s tenure that deep political problems were beginning to manifest. It was at this point that Jose’s mindset shifted toward what he describes as “preparing for the worst.” He began to acquire additional supplies, fearing shortages if a major crisis erupted. He focused on newly defined necessities:

• A Duxtop portable induction cooktop
• A cheap used game for the kids to play and leave my computer alone so I can take up freelancing
• A HAM radio
• And a range of construction tools for repairs and projects

It wasn’t too much longer before the situation began to spiral deeply out of control … and prepping did indeed turn to survival.

Post-2015 has seen food rationing, riots and looting, outrageous inflation, a collapse of public transportation, almost non-existent healthcare, a world-leading murder rate and an existential threat to nearly anyone who lives in Venezuela. This final shift to flat-out survival has led to new adaptations in Jose’s daily life. However, he also emphasizes that his situation is far better than most “just because we made the necessary financial and food preparations.” Still, he has had to fortify his home in new ways and consider personal safety constantly when he leaves his home, which now includes a heightened skill to anticipate a threatening situation before it becomes a grave danger.

Among his 10 Home Security Tips, he includes:

• Steel-reinforced windows and grilles
• Steel shutters and backup barricades
• An unassuming door, ornamental, but steel reinforced with 3 locks
• A microperforated steel foldable door for the garage and to enclose the front yard.
• A concrete safe room stocked with provisions and weapons … and preferably an escape route underground.
• A well-maintained vehicle, but nothing flashy

Perhaps even more important than the various stages of physical preparation and security for survival is the fortification of one’s mentality. It begins first with being prepared, then adapting to a shocking new reality — going through the stages of anxiety, anger and anguish that Jose describes so vividly. It’s never too late to begin considering these uncomfortable possibilities no matter where you live; and, if you already are well on your way to feeling prepared, it’s important to listen carefully to the stories of people who already really lived it.

Please also read the work of Selco who describes his year in Bosnia under a total blockade: no products in or out, no utilities and no services. The importance to have barter and trade skills in a situation where money has become worthless cannot be overstated, as he says that it “only took a few weeks” of total lockdown for this dynamic to emerge.

Postal System Going Broke

With all the woes following our Postal System, I thought you might find this interesting…

Do you know the amazing story of Lysander Spooner? He lived from 1808 to 1887. His first great battle was taking on the post office monopoly. In the 1840s, he was like most people at the time: fed up with the high prices and bad service. But as an intellectual and entrepreneur, he decided to do something about it. He started the American Letter Mail Company, and his letter business gave the government some serious competition.

It opened offices in major cities, organized a network of steamships and railroads, and hired people to get the mail to where it needed to be. His service was both faster and cheaper than the government’s own. Then he published a pamphlet to fight the power: “The Unconstitutionality of the Laws of Congress Prohibiting Private Mails.” It was brilliant. It rallied people to his side. And he made a profit.

The government hated him and his company and began to litigate against him. It dramatically lowered the price for its services, and used public money to cover its losses. The goal was to bankrupt Spooner, and it eventually succeeded. Spooner’s private postal system had to be shut down

Spooner didn’t go away. He was more than an entrepreneur. He was a brilliant and pioneering intellectual, as the collection The Lysander Spooner Reader makes clear. He was a champion of individual liberty and a passionate opponent of all forms of tyranny.

Spooner advocated what he called Natural Law – or the "Science of Justice" – wherein acts of initiatory coercion against individuals and their property were considered "illegal" but the so-called criminal acts that violated only man-made legislation were not.

Spooner spoke plainly: what you call the Constitution has no authority to take away my rights. Hence his famous essay: “Constitution of No Authority.” In “No Treason” he argues that the state has no rights over your freedom of speech. In “Vices Not Crimes,” he shows that people in any society are capable of doing terrible things but the law should only concern itself with aggression against person and property. Reading them all together, as they are in this book, is a radicalizing experience — a liberating experience. It makes you see the world in a completely different way.

Aluminum Foil - A good kitchen friend

Aluminum foil saves a ton of clean up time and has many wonderful uses which we’re sharing here.

Sharpen your scissors. In between professional sharpenings (or for those 99 cent pairs of scissors that you don’t want to pay to have sharpened), use aluminum foil to keep your scissors in top form. Cutting through 6-8 layers of aluminum foil will improve the cutting surface of most scissors.

Shine up rusty chrome. With a bit of water on a wadded-up piece of aluminum foil, you can rub most rust spots off of chrome car parts.

Keep your oven clean. Tired of scraping burned-on food out of the bottom of your oven? Line it with aluminum foil before making something particularly messy. Don’t leave it in there permanently, however, because it can lead to oven damage over time.

Make your soap last longer. Put a piece of aluminum foil on the bottom of your bar of soap to keep it from sitting in a puddle of water and wearing away quickly

Keep birds out of your fruit trees. Hang twisted strips of aluminum foil all over your fruit trees using fishing line. The light reflections and the sound will keep birds away from your fruit.

Re-soften hard brown sugar. Many people put hard brown sugar in the microwave to soften it up, but this can actually backfire and make the sugar harden even more. Instead, wrap the block of hardened sugar in some aluminum foil and bake in a 300° (Fahrenheit) oven for 5 minutes.

If your TV and DVD player are stacked one on top of the other, you may find the picture is a bit fuzzy. This often happens when the electromagnetic fields from both devices interfere with each other. Place a sheet of aluminum foil between them to cut down on the interference.

Reflect heat into your house. Put a layer of aluminum foil behind your radiator when it is off and completely cool. When the radiator is turned on, more of the heat will be directed into the living area and less will be absorbed into the wall behind the radiator.

Make a solar cooker. You’ll cut down on energy costs and experience a traditional way of cooking.

Makes great gift wrapping paper in a pinch and can be decorated as you wish.

To prevent stuck on food in my baking pans and cookie sheets, I will line them with foil. It cuts down on cleaning time and leaves my pans looking just as good as they did when they went into the oven. Rinse off the sheets if they are not to disastrous and save them for another baking session, or rinse them off and put them in your recycling bin.

The Nanny State Updates…

When the federal government first began putting naked body scanners into airports and began implementing "enhanced pat-downs" of travelers, many warned that hordes of sicko perverts would start applying for jobs with the TSA. Well, it turns out that one TSA employee is now being charged with a nightmarish sexual assault. The following is how WJLA in Washington D.C. describes what he is being charged with....

The suspect, Harold Glen Rodman, 52, allegedly was wearing his uniform and displayed a badge to the victim, a 37-year-old woman.

Police arrested Rodman on Nov. 20. He is charged with aggravated sexual battery, object sexual penetration, forcible sodomy and abduction with intent to defile.

The federal government has become so paranoid that they have been putting GPS tracking devices on the vehicles of thousands of people that have not even been charged with committing any crimes. The following is a short excerpt from a recent Wired magazine article about this issue....

The 25-year-old resident of San Jose, California, says he found the first one about three weeks ago on his Volvo SUV while visiting his mother in Modesto, about 80 miles northeast of San Jose. After contacting Wired and allowing a photographer to snap pictures of the device, it was swapped out and replaced with a second tracking device. A witness also reported seeing a strange man looking beneath the vehicle of the young man’s girlfriend while her car was parked at work, suggesting that a tracking device may have been retrieved from her car.

Then things got really weird when police showed up during a Wired interview with the man.

The young man, who asked to be identified only as Greg, is one among an increasing number of U.S. citizens who are finding themselves tracked with the high-tech devices.

The Justice Department has said that law enforcement agents employ GPS as a crime-fighting tool with “great frequency,” and GPS retailers have told Wired that they’ve sold thousands of the devices to the feds.

Melt sidewalk is by spreading a generous portion of sand mixed with baking soda over the walk and steps.  It won’t stain or damage concrete surfaces.

The Parting Thought – Time is running out

"In 2002 it was bad, in 2008 it was worse and 2012 or 2013 is going to be worse still – be careful"

Willem Buiter, chief economist at Citigroup: "Time is running out fast. I think we have maybe a few months -- it could be weeks, it could be days -- before there is a material risk of a fundamentally unnecessary default by a country like Spain or Italy which would be a financial catastrophe dragging the European banking system and North America with it."

The federal government is now over 15 trillion dollars in debt. During the Obama administration so far, the U.S. government has accumulated more new debt than it did from the time that George Washington took office to the time that Bill Clinton took office.

There is already talk that we may soon see another downgrade for U.S. debt. It is hard to even describe how incompetent the U.S. Congress is.

Yet, the idiots who run the country continue along with stupid regulation that stifle job creation and cost Americans a lot of time and money…Most of the big regulatory agencies of the federal government have totally gone crazy. For example, the EPA is now specifically targeting Americans that use traditional wood-burning stoves.

No progress will be made on the economy until we rid ourselves of these anti-citizen, red-tape strangling policies.

If you have not recently read the Bill of Rights, it is well worth your time to review it. It begins with the truths the authors believed were self-evident. For instance, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The remainder (and majority) of the document is a list of crimes and offenses committed by the British government, many of which are being committed by our government today. Among the reasons given for the necessity of "dissolving the political bands" that had tied the colonies to Britain:

"For imposing taxes on us without our consent."

"For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us" and "for protecting them from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these states."

For obstructing trade, perverting justice, and carrying out "the works of death, desolation, and tyranny."

In a nutshell, is the definition of patriotism: allegiance to one’s own gatekeeper, affection for one’s oppressor?
