I have a dream…

Watching the Ken Burn’s documentary on the Roosevelt family legacy reignited my pipedream of helping my fellow citizens who have fallen out of the middle class.

Folks during the Great Depression knew what it was like to be poor compared to people of the 21st century [However, the cost of living by comparison is dreadful].  Programs such as the CCC, TVA and other programs helped rebuild America and helped restore self respect and put some cash back in the family coffers.  It didn’t end the Great Depression but it sure helped rebuild the American spirit, unlike the welfare programs of today.

The poor of today often have large flat screen TVs, expensive Smart phones, vehicles and nice clothes.  Back then the majority of families remained a mom and dad unit while the majority of poor families today are usually fatherless and having children [expected to be the majority in 10 years] out of wedlock no longer seems to carry any stigma…after all, Uncle Sam will provide everything you need no matter how many children you have.

At this point, approximately one out of every three children in the United States lives in a home without a father.

When my foreign cousins [mostly from Germany] come here they often comment on how much stuff Americans own…to the point where they have exhausted room for cars in the family garage and need to pay to store their stuff.  Their take is few in America are really poor but what amazes them most is how poorly educated so many of us seem to be.

A recent report titled “Hunger in America 2014” released by Feeding America, revealed that 46 million Americans have relied on charities for food in the past year.  That equates to one in seven and we have record amounts of people who receive food stamps.  Yet, look around you.  We also boast the most obese people in the world!  More than 60% of Americans are now considered obese.

Prior to being waylaid with a heart attack and other health problems my plan had been to open a camp for unwed mothers, limited to 15 cabins and it would include a garden, livestock and repair shops, a communal dining hall and library.   Everyone would be expected to pitch in whether it be food preparation, sewing, animal care, or working in the garden.

For women under the age of 30 in the United States, more than half of all babies are being born out of wedlock.

We would also offer basic skill training covering paramedical skills, small engine repair, electrical, plumbing and carpentry.  Education covering the three Rs would be offered as well.  Working with animals and your hands is a proven confidence builder and helps to build self reliance skills.

I’ll be in the hospital again this weekend to have some devices inserted into my heart.  If all goes well, I hope to be recuperated by the spring of 2015 and plan to research grants and or donations which will enable me to restore the non-profit status of a group I used to be the volunteer chair of [the Minimalist Group] and will research various groups where I might find grants to secure funding for this 10-15 acre facility…any suggestions would be welcome.

It is not enough that you have a vision. The vision must have you.

How to Research Your Family History-Free or Cheap

I’ve paid researches to dig up information about our family tree.  Lots of interesting folks in my lineage including a Prussian General/Duke and cousin of the Red Baron along with one ancestor who fought in our American Revolution – on both sides! {He started off on the side of the colonists, got captured by the British and fought for them and then escaped and ended the war on the side of the colonists].

You can earn some cash or just have fun as this is largely a self taught hobby.  Interviewing family members, searching census records is part of the strategy.  You can increase your expertise with free seminars offered from such groups as the Illinois State Genealogical Society [IllGenSoc.org].

You might also sign up with the Association of Professional Genealogists [APGen.org] and there are plenty of online sites which are helpful including:  FindMyPast.com, and the sites I’ve listed below.

FamilySearch.org.

This website is run by the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints, and includes a multitude of records for people of any religion to help in researching their family tree. FamilySearch.org is one of the best sites for accessing free records. Many of the documents come with photographs (that you can easily print for your records). A quick search turns up death, marriage, and birth certificates within seconds, even if you only know a first and last name. With millions of records on hand, this database is a great way to fill in the branches of your family tree without spending a dime.

Access the Ellis Island Records Database.

Because we're a nation of immigrants, chances are you had a relative come into the country through Ellis Island. This database is run by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, so you can search their records for free. They have more than 22 million records from immigrants who entered the US at Ellis Island or the Port of New York between 1892 and 1924. The database is very extensive, so you can search by your relative's name, the year they arrived, year of birth, town of origin, or the name of the ship they arrived on. You can also print out immigration records or ship logs relevant to your ancestor's history.

Search Social Security records.

The Social Security death index began in 1962 and has housed records on American citizens since its inception. You can search their database for free through the FamilySearch.org website. The Social Security records are a great place to start if you don't have a lot of initial information. All you need is a first and last name to begin your search. Some records have photos attached, but at the bare minimum, you can find the dates of birth or death and that person's Social Security number. This information will give you a great starting off point for further research.

This free project has been growing since 2008. As a community we are creating a single shared family tree using traditional genealogical sources and DNA tests. As individuals we are connecting the tree with our private family histories.

Will You Laugh or Cry at the Coming Food Price Spikes?

So far this summer, the drought that has decimated most of the fertile growing areas in California as well as 11 other states and has continued to scorch what crop land that remains.

The bad news is that there is no relief in sight. Most farmers are just plain giving up and are now refusing to plant as the losses mount up from previous years of farming in what has turned into a desert. In Fact, it's so bad that Tim Quinn, the executive director of the Association of California Water Agencies said...

"There are places in California that if we don't do something about it, tens of thousands of people could turn on their water faucets and nothing would come out."

During the last drought-induced food crisis which took place during the Dust Bowl days, folks knew how to hunker down, live on less and grow their own food.

That's not the case today. The average American today doesn't know how to live on less, let alone grow their own food.

Money talks all right; but in these days, a dollar doesn't have enough cents to say anything worthwhile.

After a long and cruel winter, we finally visited our mini-farm and cabin.  Our tractor is in need of many repairs and our deck, porch, etc. all need to be re-stained but the worst was our toilet tank which cracked (of course, we didn’t notice that until we turned on the water and made a fine mess), our hot water tank bowed at its bottom and we accidentally left the fridge closed so what little moisture it had managed to gloss over into a nice layer of mold.

The door of our large rabbit hutch blew right off its hinges as did parts of our barn siding and more than a few animals decided the barn would make a nice winter resort.

Many, like us, have experienced a lengthy winter.  It still drops to the 30s at night with highs rarely going above 50…hell, we’re still running heaters at night!  This and the nearly daily downpour of rain has prevented us from preparing or planting our garden.

Will likely be a late harvest but we’re still looking forward to homegrown veggies!  With that in mind, here are few more gardening tips, especially if you’re just getting started!

7 Ways to Garden Like You Know What You're Doing (Even If You're Just Getting Started)

A few simple guidelines to follow when breaking out the trowel and gloves

I grew up with huge backyard garden. My mother was a wonderful gardener. Each spring, she would section out portions—a row here or a row there—for each child to plant seeds and be responsible for tending and growing.

You’d think I’d automatically have a garden when I left college—but I didn’t. It wasn’t until much later that I decided to garden. Interestingly, I didn’t know where to start, so I began like a non-gardener and had to learn a lot from scratch.

Here are some beginner steps to share:

This year is shaping up to be one of the worst for food inflation that we've had in a long time. Here are some money saving resources:

While government statisticians claim robust growth, recent data points suggest otherwise. Consumers are quickly running out of money, home sales have collapsed and hit their biggest drop in three years, there are more Americans out of the labor force than ever before AND food prices, because of drought and other factors are set to rise at a middle class family killing rate…

Overall inflation, including food and fuel (which aren't reported in official numbers), doubled economists' predictions between March and April. Food prices were largely responsible for the unexpected size of the increase.

The USDA has put out even higher numbers for food inflation, anticipating that prices will rise around 3.5% in the course of the year. They admit that this number is based on normal weather patterns.

But we're not having normal weather patterns. And we haven't been for three years now!

Since December, the spot price for foodstuffs has increased a full 19% across the board. That signals rising prices at the grocery store for sure. If you aren’t planning to spend a bigger chunk of your paycheck on groceries, it’s time to start giving some thought to your food budget strategy. Higher prices are coming whether you’re ready for them or not.

To make matters even worse, wages aren’t increasing. So, whether you’re paying 3% more or 19% more at the grocery store— or somewhere in between— you’re going to have less money to stretch across the rest of your budget. More Americans are making  due with less … way less … just to keep food on the table.

It’s now estimated a family of four spends $1,000 monthly on groceries.  Combining store loyalty card savings with coupons can save $350 on average per month.  Your Sunday newspaper accounts for 90% of all coupons issued and can be a gold mine, so buy extra copies.

Survival Practices that Could Get You Killed

5 Common Prepping Mistakes

ALTHOUGH the Poor Man has touched on many of these areas in the past, here are few quick reminders…

Prepping Mistake #1: Putting too much stock in gear and not enough effort into gaining survival skills. No doubt, gear is important. If you have enough food on hand and the tools to cook it with, that will help you get through tough times. If you have a handgun or rifle, you’ll be better positioned to protect yourself if things get violent.

But what if you’ve never practiced cooking with your back-up propane stove? What if you’ve never taken your gun to the range? And what if whatever crisis you’re facing outlasts your food stores or your ammunition? What then?

In any crisis situation, it’s your knowledge and skill sets that will get you through. Having the right tools is important, but those tools can be worse-than-useless if you’ve haven’t learned to use them… and in untrained hands they can become downright dangerous.

Make a commitment this year to gain the practical knowledge you need to make good use of your preparations.

Prepping Mistake #2: Never doing a dry run. This goes hand-in-hand with prepping mistake number one. I know a lot of people who put a lot of money and effort into preparing for the end of the world and then never actually test their work.

Schedule a “crisis weekend” with your family, and go through a dry run. It’s as simple as picking a scenario – the power grid has gone down or the dollar has collapsed – and living out your weekend based on some of the likely outcomes of that scenario.

Periodically doing a dry run has two beneficial outcomes: it helps train you and your family into a mindset of dealing with unforeseen and difficult situations, and it helps you see immediately any gaps in your preparations.

Prepping Mistake #3: Not planning for likely scenarios. Speaking of the end of the world, I see a lot of preppers putting effort into readying for a nuclear attack or a bird flu pandemic and ignoring the fact that they live on a flood plain or in tornado alley. Planning for the big stuff is great, but it makes so much more sense, especially when you’re spending your hard-earned money, to plan for the most likely scenarios first.

Go ahead and plan for the apocalypse, but do it after you’ve planned for the next hurricane or earthquake or whatever natural disaster is mostly likely to come your way.

Prepping Mistake #4: Thinking one is enough. Have you ever had the power go out and felt proud because you knew right where the flashlight was only to discover the bulb was burnt out and you didn’t have a back up?

You’ll hear military types say, “Two is one, one is none.” What they mean is that equipment failures happen. If you have only one of something and it fails, you’re out of luck. If you have two, when an equipment failure happens, you’re still in the game. Double up on gear or repair parts for gear whenever possible.

Prepping Mistake #5: Falling prey to one of the many forms of prepping paralysis. This can take many shapes. I’ve seen people decide not to prep because they were so overwhelmed with the possibility of how bad the situation might get – they psyche themselves into thinking their preparations won’t matter because anything they’re prepping for will be insurmountable. Not true. The situations that are most likely to happen are temporary – your preparations will help you ride out the storm.

TOP 5 States no rational prepper would choose to live in…

1.      California

2.      New York

3.      Illinois

4.      Massachusettes

5.      Ohio

Why?  Our unscientific research shows these to be the most anti-freedom, anti-citizen, anti-gun, most pro socialist, most anti-Constitution and Bill of Rights states.  What do you think?

Nine Tools To Help You Lose a Surveillance Tail

It's common to find stories on the news of hidden cameras inappropriately taking videos of us in public bathrooms, hotels, and changing rooms…or the NSA intercepting your private emails and conversations.  We do live in sick times.

Hackers and cyber crooks crave your personal and financial information and will stop at nothing to get it. They plant audio bugs, hack your cell phone, or otherwise gain access to your business and personal conversations. It's all just as profitable and desirable to them as hacking into your e-mail, because once they have possession of your personal data, they can freely tap your assets while saddling you with their debts.

Counter-surveillance manufacturer Ensure Privacy says:

"Many people believe surveillance devices are myths; however surveillance devices are easily purchased on the open market. Bugging devices and telephone taps are an effective means of stalking [you]. Body-Wires and room transmitters are unethical yet common practice. Professional burglars are using vehicle tracking systems to know when and where you are. Understanding that surveillance devices are real and they can be obtained easily for not a lot of money is why counter-surveillance equipment is necessary."

With today's technology, surveillance equipment can be made very small. On the leading edge, military researchers are developing "nano" drones the size of hummingbirds and insects.
