Checklist: What to stockpile besides food

Anyone who starts prepping pretty much starts out the same way, stockpiling food and water. That’s actually a very good starting point, but it doesn’t take long for anyone to realize that when things go bad, they are going to need a whole lot more than just food and water to stay alive.

If you think about it for just a moment, you realize that there’s a huge amount of products that we use on a daily basis. While some of those aren’t necessary, many are to some extent. If any crisis situation comes along which disrupts the supply lines, we won’t have those items available to us. In that case, we’ll either need to have them on hand or come up with some sort of substitute for them.

In most cases, it’s easier to have them on hand; or at least have enough of them on hand to keep us going for a while. After that, we’ll have to come up with some alternative way of functioning without those items.

So, what sorts of items should we be stockpiling, besides food and water?

·         Fuel – Any kind of fuel you can think of. If you’ve got a gas barbecue grille, then you should have extra fuel for it. Try and keep some extra gasoline on hand, even though it doesn’t keep well for long periods of time. Make a pile of firewood in your backyard for heating your home. You need to have fuel for anything that you own which needs fuel. There’s no telling how long available fuel sources will last.

·         Batteries – This kind of goes along with the fuel. The two most common sizes are AA and AAA. But if you’ve got a red dot sight on your gun, it probably uses some sort of lithium battery. Make a list of all the different battery sizes you need and stock up on them. Fortunately, Alkaline batteries are now rated at a ten year shelf life, so they’ll last you longer.

·         Cleaning supplies – It’s going to me harder to keep your home clean, because you’ll be doing more manual labor. You’ll also have the doors and windows open more, allowing more dust to blow in.

·         Personal hygiene supplies – Cleanliness is an important part of maintaining your health. Stock up on soap, shampoo and toothpaste, as well as some extra tooth brushes. If you’re planning on shaving, you’d better have a goodly supply of razor blades on hand. Stockpile deodorant as well, or just buy one of the deodorant stones so that you don’t have to worry about it.

·         Feminine hygiene supplies – While it is technically possible for women to live without these, using rags instead, they’ll be much more comfortable and much happier if they have the right stuff to take care of them that time of month.

·         Toilet paper – Another important item to keep the women happy. Toilet paper will be like gold in a crash where the supply lines are cut.

·         Matches – You can’t have too many matches, especially the strike anywhere kind. Those are getting harder to find and more expensive, but in a survival situation, they’re worth having.

·         Plastic bags – You’re going to generate trash and need something to put it in. Make sure you have a good supply of bags, in all sizes, for everything from dealing with human waste to putting away some important papers in a waterproof covering. For trash and human waste, you’re better off with the heavy-duty kind.

·         Heirloom seeds – No matter how much you stockpile, there’s always the possibility that the disaster will outlast your stockpile. Heirloom seeds will allow you to keep a good vegetable garden going, providing food for your family. Don’t buy hybrids as you won’t get seeds from them that you can use the next year; buy only heirloom. That way, you can harvest seeds from your crops and keep on planting.

·         Basic building materials – If your home becomes damaged, you’ll need a way to fix it, even if it isn’t fixed correctly. A few basic things will make it possible for you to cover a broken window or fill in a hole in the roof.

·         Duct tape – Great for 1,000 uses or more

·         Candles & oil lamps – You’ll need some sort of lighting after the sun goes down and flashlights go through batteries quickly. Get a bunch of candles so that you can see to read or work at night. Oil burning lamps are great as well, and most will burn just about any type of oil you can find.

·         Ammunition – You’ll want enough for hunting and for protecting your family.

·         Water purification filters – If your water purifier uses filters, you’ll need a goodly stock of them on hand. You can make those filters last longer by only using them to filter water you are drinking. Water for washing doesn’t have to be filtered.

·         Recipes – You’re going to be eating a different sort of diet and cooking in a different sort of way. Make sure you have recipes that you can use for the cooking methods you’re going to have available and using the types of food you’ll have available.

·         First aid supplies – Medical services will be overwhelmed, so you want to make sure you have supplies to take care of yourself if anyone in the family gets sick or injured.

·         Vitamins – Vitamins will go a long way towards making up for a poor diet. Make sure that you have good ones, as some of the lower cost ones don’t even dissolve in your system.

·         Medicines – Everyone needs a good stock of over the counter medicines. If anyone in your family has special medical needs, make sure you have those medicines on hand as well.

·         Clothing – Your kids are going to be growing, even though there’s a crisis going on. Shift your buying patterns so that you are buying clothing a couple of sizes larger than what they need right now. That way, you’ll always have a couple of years worth of clothing for them to wear.

As you can see, there are a lot of items on this list, and I won’t even claim that it’s complete. The thing is that we need much more than just food and water to survive. Start looking at what you use on a daily or weekly basis and think about what you would do if you couldn’t get it. If you have another alternative, that’s great; but if you really need it, you’d better start stockpiling it.

There is nothing wrong with being frugal...

...especially when it's items that will be useful at home.

A dollar store is more than a place filled with cheap trinkets and toys.

It also has plenty of useful items that many homesteaders will find handy.

On top of that, everything at the dollar store is SUPER affordable.

>> Check out my top 9 Items I find useful for my home that you can buy at a dollar store for SUPER CHEAP

SIDEBAR:

Before the proliferation of processed foods and fast foods in our diets, people weren't shaped the way they are today. Just look at a group photo taken in the 1960s and you will see there are very few if any "spare tires" in sight.

But our fast food and processed food diets have changed things dramatically.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), 34.3 percent of American children and adolescents get a significant portion of their daily food intake from fast food restaurants. The NCHS actually said they get a significant portion of their daily nutrition from fast food restaurants, but fast food is not nutrition. It is food intake, but it is merely foodless food

Picture this...

You're sitting at the kitchen table having breakfast with your family. Toast, pancakes, eggs, bacon, and orange juice. The whole 9-yards.

Suddenly, one of the kids reaches for the hot pan. And before you can yell "stop", he's pulled it down on top of himself. He's bathed in hot grease. You expect him to let out a yell. But he doesn't. His face blanches white and he curls up in a ball. You realize he's in shock. This burn is serious.

So, you turn to find your phone and call 911. Then you remember... Hospitals have become war zones. They're overrun with critical patients. There's no way they'll be able to help the boy. And your doctor hasn't worked in weeks.

You can't even buy an antibiotic cream because drugstores are closed. What do you do?

If you're Dr. John Herzog, you grab something off the kitchen table and apply it to the boy's burn immediately.

No, not the butter. It's something you'd likely never guess.

It works even better than expensive medicinal creams.

And yet, it's so common you probably have some in your own kitchen right now.

I know. I made this situation up. And yet it's something I'm sure we all realize could happen someday.

And of course, a severe burn is just one of dozens of bad things that might happen when you can't reach medical care.

Dr. Herzog put a list of together 102 other serious injuries and illnesses you can treat at home.

Check them out here.

Stockpile food against dire destitution

Stockpile food against dire destitution

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un has declared that having pet dogs is a "bourgeoisie" Western habit and has ordered all of them confiscated. The reality is that people in North Korea are being forced to give up their pet dogs so they can be used as meat for restaurants since the country is starving.

By contrast, stroll down any aisle at the grocery store on Main Street USA on an average day and you'll see thousands of food items of all kinds made by any number of producers. Many times there are six or eight brands of the same item. And they come in all sizes.

It is the illusion of prosperity. Although store shelves are currently full, there may soon come a time when that is not the case. As the U.S. Federal deficit grows beyond the current historic levels, there will come a time when a correction comes.

A devaluing of the dollar has already begun. It will be followed by inflation that could become so severe that food and other necessities become unaffordable or, despite even great wealth, unattainable.
Currently, the U.S. is doling out trillions and taking in mere billions in tax receipts. It doesn't take Pythagoras to understand that math like that doesn't add up.

Watch for much theater out of Washington in the coming days. Elected elites will posture and preen. The press will wail and gnash its teeth over the "bailouts," the money printers will continue to churn and dollars will continue to fly out the door.

Meanwhile, when State lawmakers do make the hard choices, those who long sucked off the government teat — led by the thugs directing the government employee unions and egged on by the press — will march on their capitals demanding that its government rape the taxpayers one more time to ensure their cushy arrangement.

Americans have been pushed to the brink. To quote trends forecaster Gerald Celente, "When the people lose everything, they have nothing left to lose, and they lose it."

Once the line is finally crossed, a citizenry fed up with a pandering, do-nothing, wasteful government will rise up and throw it out. When that happens, the unrest in Venezuela will pale in comparison.

If you have taken our advice and own gold and silver and have food and water stockpiled, you'll weather the storm. Those who choose to depend on big daddy government will suffer.

If you haven't yet prepared and want to prepare yourself for North Korea or Venezuela-type circumstances where Dickensian scenes of destitution are commonplace and ensure that your family has food to weather such a storm, you need to begin stockpiling food and water now.

Mainstream media and popular culture often portray American preppers as anti-government extremists who are stockpiling guns and freeze-dried foods in anticipation of societal collapse. This mischaracterization of what it means to be prepared could prove to have deadly consequences for many people who don't want to risk being labeled a fringe wacko and, therefore, refuse to take seriously the benefits of comprehensive disaster preparedness.

Even if you don't believe things in the U.S. can get that bad, it's a good idea to have some food and water stored in the event of a natural disaster that affects the food and water supply for a short time.

You should always keep at least a three-day supply of food on hand. It's easy to stockpile a few cans of meats, soups and vegetables as well some rice and grains to get you through a short-term emergency. You can do this by buying a few extra things each time you go to the grocery store. Remember, canned foods have a shelf-life of about two years, so rotate your foods.

For longer-term situations, some advanced planning can save you from tremendous hardship when the catastrophe strikes. To prepare, you should have a good stockpile of both canned and freeze-dried foods. All canned soups, fruits, vegetables and meats should be kept in a dry, cool space.

Be smart with your planning and purchasing and you can accumulate food that will sustain you for a long time at very little cost. Just don't gather things your family will not eat. Oatmeal, ramen noodles and Bisquick are great things to have on hand in an emergency, and they don't cost much.

And, don't forget to add commonly used spices, which help to make any food more palatable.

Freeze-dried foods and military-style Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) are convenient types of foods to have on hand for emergencies. These are available from outdoor supply stores, survivalist stores and via the Internet. There are various types of MREs that can be purchased in kits with quantities to feed families for up to a year.

When buying these pre-packaged meal kits, be sure you compare the packages for a list of meals and ingredients included before making your purchase. Some tend to scrimp on their offerings and provide just enough to survive but not enough for a hearty, filling meal that includes protein.

How much food should I save?

You can never have too much food set aside for a crisis because you can't know ahead of time what the crisis will be or how long it will last. Will a three-day supply be enough? One week? A month? Three months? A year?
You hope it doesn't last long, but you never know. So it's best to start small and work from there. And start with a definite plan.

There are several things to consider. How many are in your family? How many additional people would you bring under your roof? What is the nature of the crisis — natural disaster, terrorist attack, economic collapse or fuel shortage?
Let's start with a three-day supply. If you are feeding a family of four for three days, you will need to plan on three breakfast meals, three lunches and three dinners. If you need a store of food so you're prepared to weather any kind of emergency, here is what we feel is best emergency food you can get anywhere: Just follow this link for a deep discount.

The main idea is to prepare. That way, if the U.S. should take a turn for the worse, you won't find yourself on a diet of meager meals, scraping to get by.
In How to Survive the Collapse of Civilization, I explain, among other things, how to set up a safe room, how to prepare for almost any kind of disaster, what medicinal plants you can find outside your home and much more. You can buy it by going here.

Other Thoughts…

The whole point of preparedness is to be ready when a disaster strikes. If a hurricane is heading your way, you don't want to be in line at the store with hundreds of other people buying whatever supplies are left. You want to be at home with your family, secure in the fact that you have all the supplies you need.
But what if it's too late? Imagine you're one of those people who likes the idea of preparedness but never really got into it, and now a disaster is looming and you only have hours left to prepare. What should you do?

Again, you don't want to let yourself end up in this situation. But in case you are, here is a list of last-minute preps to do/get before it's too late...
