Armed Home Defense

By Jeff Cantor

Guns aren’t for everyone. I get it.

Some people can’t stand the idea of having a gun in their homes even though their communities may be under siege by burglars, rapists and home invaders.

Personally, I believe nothing beats a firearm as a home defense weapon.

But if you’re going to use a gun, you need to get properly trained and you need to schedule regular target practice. And you must make a pledge to store and handle your weapon safely, especially in your home — and especially if you have children.

Unfortunately, most people aren’t willing to make that kind of commitment.

Fortunately, guns aren’t the only options for home defense weapons. As the late-President Teddy Roosevelt once said: “Do what you can with what you have where you are.”

Just days ago in Martin County, Florida, a 19-year-old man reportedly hurled himself through the front window of a house and attacked a woman and her 34-year-old son.

While the son fought the teen hand-to-hand, the mother grabbed a baseball bat and clubbed the intruder in the head several times. They held the 19-year-old off until county sheriff’s deputies arrived and arrested him.

The teen, who was reportedly on the wildly unpredictable illegal drugs flakka and LSD, now faces charges of burglary and assault. The mother suffered minor injuries from window glass but her son escaped unharmed.

This is a classic example of how to fight off an intruder without a gun. But you can do an even better job of protecting yourself and your loved ones. All it takes is a little planning and some family teamwork.

Home defense fundamentals.

First and foremost, you have to recognize a threat as quickly as possible so that you can act. This is not always as easy as it sounds.

I can imagine you saying: “If someone breaks into my home, sure as heck I am going to hear him!” Well, not necessarily.

You can become so preoccupied with household chores that you don’t even realize that you’re in danger until you’re looking down the barrel of a gun or feel the cold steel of a knife at your throat.

Or you can be fast asleep at 3 a.m. when your toddler girl wakes you up because she hears a noise. But because you’re groggy, you tell her to go back to bed without even considering that she really has heard a boogeyman.

Make your home a hard target.

Of course, if you make your house extremely hard to break into, then you’ll force any intruders to use extreme measures — which will force them to make so much noise that you’ll be sure you’re under attack. This is called making your home a “hard target.”

In an ideal world, your “hard target” home should be inside a gated community with a team of security guards manning the entrances and patrolling inside the community.

Your yard should be equipped with security lights that come on whenever there is movement on your property. The house should have solid metal doors with wood veneer and the doors should be set in metal jambs. And your home’s windows should be shatter resistant. You should install security cameras outdoors and indoors as well as an alarm system, complete with a cute little sign on the lawn.

In the real world, you’ll have to pick and choose among all those options based upon your priorities and upon what you can afford.

But what if the bad guys get in anyway?

Today, I’m going to tell you how to defend yourself and your loved ones when all your “hard target” defenses fail. And I’m going to tell you the best ways to defend your home without a firearm.

Let’s inventory your armory…

If you have to respond to a threat inside your home, you will want every tactical advantage possible. A firearm provides you with that comfort provided you have the skill to use it. However, not everyone wants a gun in their home.

So let’s inventory your armory. Now you say, “I don’t have an armory. I’m just an average person. I’m not a secret agent or a drug dealer.”

But you do have an armory. Your whole house is one giant cache of weapons. All you have to do is look at all the objects around you and then use your imagination.

Keep in mind that any response is better than no response. So get in the habit of looking for makeshift weapons whenever you enter a room. Scan for something heavy, something sharp, something you can throw as a missile, something you can wield as a club or a staff, something that can propel gases or chemicals.

Consider even mundane items, such as books, as potential weapons. A hardcover book or a rolled up magazine can be quite powerful when thrust in the right manner. Even a heavy coffee mug on the counter when grabbed tight by the handle and forcibly directed at the intruder’s head or arm could do substantial damage.

The point is, open your eyes and your mind to all the potential defensive tools that you have in your home. Make sure you discuss this idea with your family members so they will have “20/20 vision” when it comes to finding these weapons, too.

Here are some suggestions for finding weapons on the fly …

Stabbing, slashing or cutting: Kitchen knives, silverware forks and knives, spike meat thermometers, sewing shears, office scissors, various tools, including garden shears, saws, chisels, or screwdrivers. And don’t forget you can instantly create a sharp edge by breaking a bottle, glass, jar or even a dinnerware cup or plate.

Clubs and impact weapons: You should easily identify hammers and meat tenderizers and cast iron skillets. You can also add sports equipment like baseball bats, tennis rackets and weight-lifting dumbbells. But also keep an eye out for heavy mugs, paperweights, trophies, metal sculptures and fireplace equipment.

Staffs: Look for brooms, mops, shovels, rakes, hockey sticks and lacrosse sticks.

Shields: Some of these can do double-duty as clubs while you should use others to simply cushion blows from clubs or fists or to deflect knives. Go for pots, pans, large framed photos or artwork, coffee-table books, and in desperate straits, even pillows.

Chemical weapons: Mace has nothing on sprays for killing weeds and insects or for cleaning kitchens and bathrooms or for removing laundry stains. You can sometimes also turn the tables on an attacker with sprays for cooking, hairstyling, and even deodorants.

To prepare for a break in, you can stage defensive items all around your house. For example, you can tape a knife under a coffee table and hide a baseball bat in a corner out of sight.

Think carefully about “where” to stage tools and put them in places you spend a lot of your time. Also think about where you’re most likely to “make a stand” in your home. Then place some makeshift weapons at these locations.

But remember, you may have to retreat from strong, vicious thugs who have experience at making mayhem. So plan your retreats, step-by-step, stand-by-stand, and have new weapons waiting for you at each new “stand.”

Until next time, stay alert, check your six, put your back against the wall and stay safe!

NAFTA a Disaster for US Workers-Yet Voters Still Support Democrats

Democratic Policies, Such as NAFTA Equal More Layoffs for US Workers

NAFTA has been a disaster for US workers yet voters continue to support the democrats who pushed the Act through Congress-Does that make Sense?

Since the year 2000, the United States has lost five million manufacturing jobs even though our population has grown substantially since that time.  Manufacturing in America is in a state of stunning decline, our economic infrastructure is being absolutely gutted, and our formerly great manufacturing cities are in an advanced state of decay.  We consume far more wealth than we produce, and the only way that we are able to do this is by taking on massive amounts of debt.  But is our debt-based paper economy sustainable in the long run?

Back in 1960, 24 percent of all American workers worked in manufacturing.  Today, that number has shriveled all the way down to just 8 percent.  CNN is calling it “the Great Shift”

In 1960, about one in four American workers had a job in manufacturing. Today fewer than one in 10 are employed in the sector, according to government data.

Call it the Great Shift. Workers transitioned from the fields to the factories. Now they are moving from factories to service counters and health care centers. The fastest growing jobs in America now are nurses, personal care aides, cooks, waiters, retail salespersons and operations managers.

No wonder the middle class is shrinking so rapidly.  There aren’t too many cooks, waiters or retail salespersons that can support a middle class family.

Since the turn of the century, we have lost more than 50,000 manufacturing facilities.  Meanwhile, tens of thousands of gleaming new factories have been erected in places like China.

Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

At this point, the total number of government employees in the United States exceeds the total number of manufacturing employees by almost 10 million

Government employees in the United States outnumber manufacturing employees by 9,932,000, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Federal, state and local government employed 22,213,000 people in August, while the manufacturing sector employed 12,281,000.

The BLS has published seasonally-adjusted month-by-month employment data for both government and manufacturing going back to 1939. For half a century—from January 1939 through July 1989—manufacturing employment always exceeded government employment in the United States, according to these numbers.

You might be thinking that government jobs are “good jobs”, but the truth is that they don’t produce wealth.  Government employees are really good at pushing paper around and telling other people what to do, but in most instances they don’t actually create anything except job strangling red tape.

In order to have a sustainable economy, you have got to have people creating and producing things of value.  A debt-based paper economy may seem to work for a while, but eventually the whole thing inevitably comes crashing down when faith in the paper is lost.

Right now, the rest of the world is willing to send us massive amounts of stuff that they produce for our paper.  So we keep producing more and more paper and we keep going into more and more debt, but at some point the gig will be up.

If we want to be a wealthy nation in the long-term, we have got to produce stuff.  That is why the latest news from Caterpillar is so depressing.  In addition to the thousands of layoffs that had been previously announced by the industrial machinery giant, it appears that a fresh wave of layoffs has arrived

Hundreds of mostly office employees received layoff notices at one of the largest Caterpillar Inc. facilities in the Peoria area this week, just as the company announced plans to close overseas production plants and eliminate thousands more positions.

A total of 300 support and management employees at Building AC and the Tech Center in Mossville this week received job loss notifications that included severance packages, 60 days notice and mandated Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letters.

During this election season, you will hear many of our politicians talk about how good “free trade” is for the global economy.  But that is only true if the trade is balanced.  Unfortunately, we have been running a yearly trade deficit of between 400 billion dollars and 600 billion dollars for many years…

What you won’t hear is how Pres. Bill Clinton sabotaged our workers with NAFTA or the North American Free Trade Implementation Act in 1993 which effectively destroyed thousands of US jobs.   The goal of NAFTA was to eliminate barriers to trade and investment between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The implementation of NAFTA on January 1, 1994 brought the immediate elimination of tariffs on more than one-half of Mexico's exports to the U.S. and more than one-third of U.S. exports to Mexico. Within 10 years of the implementation of the agreement, all U.S.-Mexico tariffs would be eliminated except for some U.S. agricultural exports to Mexico that were to be phased out within 15 years.

NAFTA opponents – including labor, environmental, consumer and religious groups – argued that NAFTA would launch a race-to-the-bottom in wages, destroy hundreds of thousands of good U.S. jobs, undermine democratic control of domestic policy-making and threaten health, environmental and food safety standards.

NAFTA, or the North American Free Trade Agreement, was created 20 years ago to expand trade between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its secondary purpose was to make these countries more competitive in the global marketplace. It has been wildly successful in achieving this. NAFTA is now the largest free trade agreement in the world.

Why, then, is NAFTA so severely criticized? This success has come at a cost. One of the problems with NAFTA is that it's reduced U.S. jobs. A second disadvantage is that it has exploited Mexico's farmers and its environment.

Growth comes with costs, and NAFTA was no exception.  NAFTA is criticized for destroying half a million American jobs and lowering U.S. wages. In addition, NAFTA increases the U.S. trade deficit.

How did NAFTA contribute to these problems? First, NAFTA cost more than half a million jobs, as manufacturers moved to Mexico to take advantage of lower labor costs. The four states that suffered the most were California, New York, Michigan and Texas because they had had a high concentration of motor vehicles, textiles, computers, and electrical appliances industries. Lower wages in Mexico meant that workers in the remaining U.S. factories could not bargain for higher wages. Companies could now threaten to move to Mexico if labor unions negotiated too hard.  Ford Motor and Nabisco recently moved some of their operations in 2016, laying off US workers.

US firms what move operations out of the country also pay not US taxes effectively shifting the tax burden to what is left of the middle class and small business putting everyone at a disadvantage while strangling growth and pushing the United States to rank number 13 in the world in terms of entrepreneurialism [we used to be number one].

Retire on Your Own Terms-Beware Government Mandated Retirement Accounts

An article on CNBC says retirement isn't an all or nothing decision anymore. The article states: "About 30 percent of large employers - those with over 1,000 employees - offer workers some flexible retirement option, whether it is allowing older employees to work part-time or in job sharing with colleagues, according to WorldatWork, a global association of human resources managers."

Personally, I think that's a good thing. Whether someone is looking for an early retirement in their 40s or a late retirement in their 70s, it's good to have choices. Many people don't want to work full-time, but don't want to retire full-time either. The fact that they can decide to work 10, 20 or 30 hours for someone else or create their own part-time gig is great. It'll be interesting to see the variety of answers that people create for themselves.

Another article discussed some of the investment options that we had in our retirement plans. It was titled
"Retirement Savings Choices Are Poised to Shrink". According to the article, "Investors can expect limited options or higher fees in their retirement plans as brokerage firms are evaluating their pricing structures to comply with the fiduciary rule."

A US News article explains the fiduciary rule. "Much has been discussed about the Labor Department's recently finalized fiduciary rule, which will hold all financial advisors who provide retirement investment advice to a 'fiduciary standard' or, in other words, require them to put their client's best interests above all else."

This was a case where the government created a rule to protect investors. It sounds like a good idea. Advisors should hold their clients' best interest in front of their own. However, part of the result of the new rule is that some quality investments could be questioned so they won't be offered any longer. And those plans that want to offer those choices will have to spend more to justify them. Those costs will be passed on to the investor.

I agree that we all like to be protected, but we should recognize that protection has a cost. Most often American workers have been given the shaft and the 401K has become an excuse for employers to tell employees “you’re on your own,” unlike previous generations and we all know the stock market has not been kind to the little guy since 2009 and the government plans to make it even worse by mandating forced government retirement plans ”to protect your money.” [Meaning the feds want access to the massive amounts of cash sitting in private retirement accounts of citizens so they can mismanage that too-the plan has been in the works for some time now and Obama announced it four years ago during one of his State of Dis-Union speeches…few Americans caught on].

Despite the promises of President Obama during his two terms in office we’ve seen few middle class jobs with livable wages and benefits, forcing many to take on second jobs.  We’ve also seen record numbers of Americans forced to accept food stamps and college grads moving back home with mom and dad.  Many Americans too have been forced to delay their retirement plans or take on reduced pay employment careers.

Be Your Own Chief Frugal Officer

Since 2009 I’ve advised my Poor Man Survivor readers to avoid the stock market, invest in farm land, become debt free and accumulate gold and silver and live below your means.

Ironically, credit card debt in the US is creeping up again…except among those under the age of 35.

The reason is because they have so much college debt, on average, $17,200 and many recall seeing how their parents struggled during the recession when layoffs and foreclosures were especially high.  Most distrust the so-called ‘good’ economy that Obama promised would return.  Further, most admit they are not good with money and 47% say they don’t even have $400 saved for an emergency.

Most experts say people should establish good credit because without it, it is more difficult to get a mortgage, rent an apartment or get an auto loan.  If you’re starting out in life, building good credit is important and one step folks can take is to get a secured credit card through a bank [a savings account secures your credit line and your timely payments are reported to the credit bureaus thereby establishing the foundation for a credit history-ask if your bank offers this service or do an online search].

For more established folks who are planning to retire I’ve always recommended becoming debt-free and in our less than friendly middle class job oriented economy where fewer jobs pay decent wages [unless of course you work a government job], many folks find it necessary to work more than one job-even into retirement. Indeed, I would not retire unless I was completely debt free.
My wife and I are debt free and just paying all of our government mandated costs such as car insurance, health insurance, property taxes, utilities, etc. cost a bundle [especially where we live-our annual water bill alone is $3,000 as we’re the only damned place that I know of which charges based on property value as well as usage- AND we have the highest auto insurance in the entire country].

Here are several reliable resources [you’ll also find related resources at my ecommerce site including my ‘Start-a-Business CD ROM that I distributed to military veterans which I trained to launch their own business through the Ohio Veterans Center, the SBA and Mott College – its $5 and very useful].

When it comes to college safety, most parents and grandparents don’t like to think about it — even though American students face an escalating wave of campus crime, including rapes and deadly attacks by active shooters.

There is no middle ground when it comes to protecting the lives of your children and grandchildren on college campuses. It’s all or nothing. You have either prepared them or you have not. In a life-or-death situation, your children can only survive or not.

Your children and grandchildren are at serious risk. Just look at the statistics: One-in-five students is sexually assaulted during college. In 90% of rape cases, the attacker is acquainted with the victim. And the average perpetrator has committed multiple sexual assaults.
