America: In the Cybercrosshairs

In my last issue I wrote about how vulnerable we are personally and as a nation to cyber attacks from our government and from cyber crooks…

The United States’ Achilles’ heel is its dependence on computer technology.

Now, however, you can see the invisible battlefield of cyberattacks. Take a look at this real-time map:

http://map.ipviking.com

Invented by Norse, IP Viking is the world’s first cyberrisk intelligence system able to monitor cyberattacks—in real time, anywhere on the planet—and then stop them within minutes. IP Viking uses “honeypots” to lure in attackers who then reveal information about themselves.

In merely five minutes, the website tallied 1,104 attacks on America. This averages to more than 85 percent of all cyberattacks being directed toward America. The map shows a constant stream of attacks on America coming from all around the globe. At present, the U.S. is preventing most of these attacks, but how long will its defenses be able to counter the barrage?

Cleaning Kitchen Cabinets

I use white vinegar to clean greasy kitchen cabinets. I use two cups to a gallon of hot water. It is very thrifty as a gallon of white vinegar costs about $2. White vinegar is a great all-purpose cleaner. It's also great for floors and windows.

Growing Cities

Award winning documentary on urban farming in America…download it on iTunes or buy a copy at FirstRunFeatures.com.

The film takes you through the lives of people challenging the way food is being grown in America, and they offer alternative ways to provide for yourself in the middle of a city.  You can even host a screening of the film in your city.

A large percentage of us have willingly enslaved ourselves in order to acquire all of our stuff.

Today, the typical U.S. household that has at least one credit card has approximately $15,950 in credit card debt. Today, when you add up all mortgage debt, auto loans, all credit card debt and all student loan debt, the average American household is carrying a grand total of 203,163 dollars of debt.

Start Spring with a Little Extra Cash

Many places boost their hiring in the spring.  What skill sets can you bring to the table?  For example, if you’re an avid gardener, you could work at a retail garden center of local public garden.  Many museums and large cemeteries and parks [both state and national] need help with outdoor landscaping.

Temp agencies are good resources as fewer US corporations are willing to hire full time workers.  Online job sites, such as SnagAJob.com or CoolWorks.com can prove useful in your search.

If you have skills, such as bookkeeping and are comfortable with cloud-based software, list your services on free sites such as Odesk.com and Elance.com which specialize in work for independent contractors and freelancers.

Create a profile and submit job proposals to potential clients.  You can also use your social network sites to post about the services you offer.  If you have a knack for social marketing, submit your resume to sites such as JobsinSocialMedia.com and elance.com or Fiverr.com.

If you’re lucky enough to have a supportive network of family, friends and colleagues, let them know what gigs you’re offering so they can spread the word too.

Notes from a Plantation Field Hand

When the Federal government wanted to create yet another holiday to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, my home state of AZ said no.  The rationale was anyone who wanted could celebrate his memory but we didn’t need another national holiday.

Here’s why.

We have many national holidays, such as the upcoming Presidents Day.  For the most part however, holidays cost the taxpayer a lot of money.  It is the politician and their bureaucrats who get the day off.  The plantation worker gets far fewer days off and it is the plantation slave who funds these paid holidays.

When AZ refused to go along with the program [and this was voter supported] the Feds used extortion to force them into compliance by threatening to cut off the return of highway tax dollars to the state.

Government workers are among the few which still enjoy the benefits of taxpayer funded middle class lifestyle.  They still get generous pensions and health care benefits, unlike the private sector workers who have had their benefits sliced and diced by Wall Street since the 1980s.

If today’s college graduates are lucky enough to find a decent job, most begin at wages I would have laughed at when I was starting out.  Perhaps that’s why so many of them are living in Mom and Dad’s basement and are saddled with thousands in worthless school tuition loan debt.

My longtime friend and financial planner from AZ has always avoided the youth market and concentrates on pro athletes and the elderly who have money.  He told me, “Most of the younger crowd is too busy texting rather than pondering how unlikely it is they’ll ever get ahead in Obama’s economy.”

On another note…I know the economy isn’t doing well.  In a discussion with several other online sellers I’m friends with, we discovered we all had something in common…NOT ONE OF US SOLD A DAMNED THING Related to VALENTINE DAY!

All of us had invested in merchandise related to this normally lucrative day…even our local florist mentioned to me how lousy Valentines turned out to be.  This turned out to be a waste of resources but it showed us how bad the economy truly is.

My insiders tell me the Prepper Movement is beginning to peter out on many fronts.  Indicators include diminished sponsorships and viewers on related TV shows, lower attendance at prepper meetings throughout the country, lower sales of dehydrated foods, etc.

What do you think?

I know I’ve become a cantankerous contrarian old coot but I am dismayed that everything I grew up with, enjoyed and made money from has pretty much vanished.  That would include the newspaper business, the antiquarian book business [Americans do not enjoy or in many cases, do not know how to read], art and antiques, etc.

Finally, I was saddened by several of my cousins who returned from a cruise trip in Mexico [whenever the auto industry does, well, they do too.  Dealers are leasing more autos than selling since the average Joe is finding it difficult to qualify for a five-year loan].  I used to go to Mexico a lot, as much as twice a month.  However, I will not ever go back due to their BS illegal immigration policies and for holding a [former]US Marine in jail for nonsensical gun charges…they do not deserve to get more of our American dollars.

That’s just my opinion and such is life!

The US Retail Industry is Collapsing: Here’s Why You’re in Trouble

Shopping malls across America are going to look a whole lot emptier soon. An exodus of giant retailers is beginning with the announcement of hundreds of store closures and thousands of people newly unemployed.

The first of January, I broke with my usual tradition and wrote not about positive resolutions, but about the impending rockslide of the US economy. And “rockslide” is an apt word: as one thing starts rolling down the mountain, it will pick up other things until a veritable avalanche of other businesses and people are affected and rolling pell-mell right alongside.

Last year, we saw announcements of the expected closure of some retail giants. In February of 2013, Michael Snyder wrote on The Economic Collapse Blog that we would see the following:

When the Natural Food Market Is Cheaper

I like to buy organic, but often the prices are pretty high. I've found one exception. That's dried herbs and spices. Instead of buying those little bottles, I buy herbs and spices by the pound at the natural food store. Typically I'm only buying an ounce or two, so it's only a few cents. Why pay for a bottle and packaging that you'll only throw away later?

Keeping Track of Pantry Inventory
Because of our flexible work schedules, my wife and I share cooking duties. We both actually enjoy cooking, but we're running into a problem. Both of us plan our recipes in advance, and make sure that we have (or I buy) the things we need. At least once a week, I look for one ingredient or another to find that we don't have it. I can't blame my wife. She didn't know that I was counting on using that last clove of garlic, too. Is there a way that we can keep track of our pantry inventory, so we know what we have and what needs to be bought before we run out?

I’m still giving these away…

The Number One Thing You Need to Survive [Aside from a working brain]

You got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.
- Yogi Berra

The number one thing that you need to do to get ready for the coming economic collapse is to build up an emergency fund.

During the last recession, millions of Americans suddenly lost their jobs.  Because they did not have any cushion to fall back on, millions of them also suddenly could not pay their bills and their mortgages.  Foreclosures skyrocketed and countless families went from living a very comfortable middle class lifestyle to being out on the street in very short order.

And now because the people of this country have been so foolish it is going to happen again.

I’ve personally learned firsthand that many people are idiots, they don’t plan ahead for the weekend [except to stock up on beer for the ‘next big game’] let alone for an emergency.

The following comes from the Wall Street Journal

Only 38% of those polled said they could cover a $500 repair bill or a $1,000 emergency room visit with funds from their bank accounts, a new Bankrate report said. Most others would need to take on debt or cut back elsewhere.

“A solid majority of Americans say they have a household budget,” said Bankrate banking analyst Claes Bell. “But too few have the ability to cover expenses outside their budget without going into debt or turning to family and friends for help.”

The survey found that an unexpected bill would cause 26% to reduce spending elsewhere, while 16% would borrow from family or friends and 12% would put the expense on a credit card. The remainder didn’t know what they would do or would make other arrangements.

Despite Obama propaganda:

·        EVERTHING COSTS MORE TODAY – despite government inflation nonsense

·        VERY few corporations offer benefits anymore…pensions and even paid vacations are becoming a thing of the past [unlike our European counterparts who get far more for their efforts]

·        Obamacare is already costing people more in terms of higher premiums

·        The value of the dollar is shrinking and when it is ultimately replaced as the currency of choice internationally, riots will likely ensue

Decent jobs which pay middle class wages are shrinking so my advice to all is to develop a secondary set of skills to make money with or to barter with…medical, computer, electrical, plumbing [especially wells and septic] and other similar skills would top my list.

3 Critical Tools for Paying Off Debt
This is the time of year when many people look at their debt situation and shudder. They dream of what it would be like to be out of debt. And, if they're brave, they begin to plan a strategy to reduce the amount of debt they carry.

Make Energy From Weeds

Solar, wind, water, geothermal and biomass are sources of producing renewable energy. Production of energy from sun, wind, water and geothermal all require costly equipment. Even the smaller scale models of solar and wind energy for a medium sized home costs more than 1000 US Dollars. Individuals can not think of energy from water and geothermal as the required infrastructure will cost the heaven. They also require regular maintenance of moving parts, batteries and other things. Renewable energy from biomass is the cheapest form of all sources mentioned above, which require minimum initial investment and practically no maintenance at all. The biomass fuels like vegetation, crop residues, cattle waste, kitchen waste and aquatic plants are abundant in nature and also easily available throughout the year. A medium sized biomass digester can be built with about 200 US Dollars.
