Preparing for Storm Season

It is already getting mighty cold out at night [still haven’t turned on our furnace though] and since our area is prone to prolonged power outages, we’ve filled several 5-gallon fuel cans with gasoline to run our generator.

It helped greatly that gasoline costs came down a lot this week and using our Kroger loyalty card meant we paid less $2.75 per gallon!  Since switching to the Kroger pharmacy for all the drugs I take, our loyalty card has built up points faster.

Don’t be like those unprepared, clueless citizens we see on the news who rush to clean out store shelves while a storm heads their way…get your stuff now!

Now is the time to stock up on batteries, flashlights, glow sticks [most dollar stores carry them – they don’t need batteries, they are waterproof and they don’t break] and related items.

You probably already know to keep a bag of cat litter in your car should you get stuck in the snow.  Depending on where you live consider keeping a blanket, rations, and other emergency items in your auto.  Keep in mind that sugar works to melt ice just like salt and given last year’s run on salt, it might be harder to find and will be more expensive.

You can recharge your cell phone using your car, a solar charger or by plugging it into the USB port of your laptop and use Text instead of voice to prolong the life of the battery.

If you still own a landline, [we have a business land line in our house] use a corded phone as the battery operated cordless phones will lose power and become useless.

Concerns about future manmade and natural disasters are driving the U.S. market for survival kits. Across the country, families are developing disaster plans, and some are even loading up on food and supplies to help them live through a biological attack, a catastrophic earthquake, or a pandemic flu. More and more businesses are targeting preppers, -- people who actively prepare for a doomsday scenario.
