For a 'clean' New Year, evict these household toxins

Because we're being bombarded by toxins so regularly, it's no coincidence that there is a nationwide increase in immune system disorders, neurological problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, allergies, obesity and hormonal disturbances.

Though the EPA screens most products for at least some toxins, the many loopholes in the system allow some less-than-safe products on the market. Sadly, most people don't monitor for hazardous material content as closely as they should. After all, most of us are just too busy to research every single thing we buy on Consumer Reports.

But it's very important that you take precautions today. Effects from exposure to toxins are difficult to identify and it can take years before problems from exposure manifest themselves as disease or chronic ailment. Here are a few of the best ways you can reduce your exposure to toxins in and around the home.

Only use natural cleaning products. Most stores have these available, or you can make your own cleaning products using safe ingredients. Baking soda, Borax, soap powder, vinegar, lemon and hot water work just as well as harsh chemicals but without coating your home in toxins.

Establish a "no-shoes" policy in your house. This reduces the number of pesticides and other chemicals that you pick up outside from getting in your home. Residuals of toxic chemicals can last for years in rugs and carpets.

Buy fresh, organic produce. Organic farmers are prohibited from using toxic synthetic herbicides. For the freshest organic vegetables, grow your own produce or choose foods that are known to have lower pesticide-residue levels. For cleaning, sprinkle baking soda on a clean sponge, wipe down fruits and vegetables, and rinse thoroughly. Baking soda has mild (and safe) disinfectant qualities.

Get rid of air fresheners. Anything you breathe in eventually ends up in your bloodstream. Plug-in scents or synthetically scented candles may contain toxins linked to reproductive problems. As an alternative, choose candles made with essential oils or fresh flowers to scent your home. Baking soda and white vinegar works great as an odor absorber.

Ventilate. Modern homes and businesses are created to be leakproof, which we want, but unfortunately, it also means that toxins are sealed in and fresh air is sealed out. To ventilate indoor air in winter, open doors and windows on opposing sides of the room to facilitate air flow for five to 10 minutes.

Check your cosmetics. Opt for cosmetics with mineral-based pigments and natural oils. Choose soaps and shampoos free of synthetic fragrances and chemicals. Pay close attention to your deodorant/ anti-antiperspirant: many antiperspirants use aluminum-based compounds and other chemicals, which are absorbed through the sweat glands. You can buy aluminum-free antiperspirants, and there are many chemical-free brands of natural deodorant sticks and sprays that don't contain dangerous parabens.

Ditch the mothballs. Since moths chew holes through clothing and other textiles, people pack away these stinky repellents to kill them. But studies on one active ingredient in some repellents causes cancer in animals. Cedar chips and satchels of lavender keep moths at bay naturally.

Pass on the "stain-resistant" and "non-stick" stuff. Anything that uses the words Scotchgard, Gore-Tex, Stainmaster or Teflon contain PFCs. PFSc are used to make your pots and pans nonstick and your clothes, upholstery fabric, carpets, backpacks and coats water and stain repellent. They have been linked to hypothyroidism and infertility.
