Are We on the Verge of Another Financial Crisis? We have too much stuff, More

Civil War, Anarchy, Breakdown of Society?

We are on the verge of a great financial crisis which will cause economic conditions in our cities to deteriorate rapidly…civil strife is likely and the White House has preparations in place across the nation’s police departments to deal with it via martial law.  Why do you think so many local police agencies have been armed by the Feds to the point where they more closely resemble paramilitary groups?

Bill O’Reilly suggests there are a lot of people out there that actually want to turn [Ferguson, MO} this into a full-blown war.  Some want a race war, some want a “war on cops”, and others just seem to want a general excuse for crime, looting and mayhem.

So many of our elected officials and bureaucrats seem so far out-of-touch with the anger and frustration the average person feels about the coerciveness, incompetence, the high cost and lack of good will toward the people they supposedly serve.

I subscribe to John Whitehead’s newsletter and I think he summarizes it well in one of his recent commentaries

For those of us who have managed to survive 2014 with our lives intact and our freedoms hanging by a thread, it has been a year of crackdowns, clampdowns, shutdowns, showdowns, shootdowns, standdowns, knockdowns, putdowns, breakdowns, lockdowns, takedowns, slowdowns, meltdowns, and never-ending letdowns.

We’ve been held up, stripped down, faked out, photographed, frisked, fracked, hacked, tracked, cracked, intercepted, accessed, spied on, zapped, mapped, searched, shot at, tasered, tortured, tackled, trussed up, tricked, lied to, labeled, libeled, leered at, shoved aside, saddled with debt not of our own making, sold a bill of goods about national security, tuned out by those representing us, tossed aside, and taken to the cleaners.

As I point out in my book A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, we’ve had our freedoms turned inside out, our democratic structure flipped upside down, and our house of cards left in a shambles.

We’ve had our children burned by flashbang grenades, our dogs shot, and our old folks hospitalized after “accidental” encounters with marauding SWAT teams. We’ve been told that as citizens we have no rights within 100 miles of our own border, now considered “Constitution-free zones.” We’ve had our faces filed in government databases, our biometrics crosschecked against criminal databanks, and our consumerist tendencies catalogued for future marketing overtures.

In the grand scheme of things, most people are not paying attention.  In most regards I feel I am surrounded by the mundane, the trivial, the trite, the bland, and the superficial when it comes to television, government and an ill-informed citizenry who have their collective noses buried into a cell phone, oblivious to the world around them.

If you are among the thinking, what are your thoughts?

We Have Too Much Stuff!

My husband and I decided that the best way to get rid of the cost and inconvenience of storage, as well as things we had "stuffed" into our small house, was to consign our items to auction. The auction house sent a team of people to pack up and move the items from the house as well as the storage. For a fair percentage of the total sale, everything was done for us. Individual items often don't sell at expected prices at auction, but others can be very exciting. I had an old brass planter that I bought for $40 at an auction only three years before our move. It sold at auction for $350. In all, we avoided the hassles of a garage sale, got rid of a storage fee, made space in the house, and made a fine profit. I have one caution. Most auction dealers will offer to purchase your goods outright. My experience is that the price they quote will be quite a bit lower than what you could make by consigning. It was worth the risk

NOTE: When cousins of mine from Germany and Poland spent time visiting me in the US they often commented on how much stuff Americans have to the point where we are often unable to use our garage to house our vehicles because they’re already over flowing with STUFF!

Survival Cement & More Great Reader Tips

A funny brain fart award goes to Lauren Tannehill, wife of Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill.  She pulled a huge ‘whoops’ when she left her hubby’s AR-15 in the back of their rental car!  And where I live we think we’ve finally finished with snow but a drunk MI woman got stuck in a treestand so she called 911 to report that she got stuck in her ‘tree house’ after getting into a fight with a friend (lots of lame folks here).

We were happy to hear Ruger and Smith & Wesson will stop selling handguns in CA rather than comply with stupid new microstamping rules…can’t tell you how many businesses have left the Golden State rather than put up with its socialist politicians.

Speaking of AR’s…every round you send downrange with a gas-operated AR blows dirt into the receiver which accumulates on the trigger.  Spray down the trigger group with a good blast of brake-cleaning fluid to prevent build-ups.  Thanks to John B

(As featured in the August 2008 issue of Practically Seeking)

One of the most useful substances one can use outdoors is Survival Cement.

This mixture of mud and grasses can be used for a multitude of projects, from construction of shelters, cooking structures, kilns and food caches, to wrapping food for clay baking (as seen in my articles on these subjects in Wilderness Way magazine ) and much more.

Survival cement has been used throughout the eons of history in countless ways.

It is simple to make, the ingredients are easy to come by and it is one of the most durable resources available in a primitive situation. In fact, during a trip to Utah a couple of years ago we encountered some Anasazi ruins that were many hundreds, if not thousands of years old where the survival cement was still intact…[Editors note: And they are.  I studied the Anasazi and visited their dwellings when I attended ASU.]

Tax Benefits of Owning a Small Farm

Being a small farm owner entitles you to certain tax benefits , but careful attention must be paid to keep accurate and detailed records. The IRS requires that you show a clear intent to make a profit. If you do not show a clear intent to profit from your small farm, the IRS may re-classify your farm as a hobby instead of a farm business. If your farm gets re-classified as a hobby you will not be able to enjoy the tax benefits of owning a small farm.

I’ve also found that small dixie cups work well for starting plants, and as far as getting my seeds, for most like peppers tomatoes, musk  melon and watermelon,  I just purchase, a few of each, remove the seeds rinse and spread them out on news paper before planting season and let them dry. Once I harvest, I do the same thing and have an abundance of seeds every year.  >>Shawn

Always Clean Shower

If you have a glass shower, use a squeegee on the glass every time you finish showering. This absolutely eliminates grimy soap scum and saves tons of time scrubbing, especially if you have hard water that stains very easily. I used to spend literally hours scrubbing hard water stains and soap scum off the shower doors. Now, I simply swipe the glass after showering and I have beautiful, clean, streak-free shower doors. I cannot remember the last time I actually had to get out glass and shower cleaner to scrub them!

Hunger Games

The Hunger Games” represents a wildly popular trilogy of science fictions books aimed at first toward the Teen and young adult market, but then becoming popular with the “adult” market as well. It has become a very popular movie trilogy; the second installment was released in November, with the final film next year. A synopsis is a dystopian North America of the future and a country named “Panem”.

The narrator is a 16 year old girl named Katniss Evergreen, living in District 12. Panem consists of twelve districts, rigidly controlled by a central government located “The Capital”, a city of wealth and great technological advancement. Each of the other districts are dedicated to particular industry’s and the people of each are kept at a subsistence level of life. There is little hope for the future and brutal retribution for disobeying the “The Capital’s” edicts. We are told that there had been a revolution some 70 years before that was brutally repressed and ultimately failed.

As a reminder of the futility of revolution, each year there is a lavish production made for TV of a gladiatorial conflict and called “The Hunger Games.” From each of the 12 districts two young people are chosen randomly to fight to the death. Each district sends a male and a female. The ultimate winner (survivor) is gives a life of wealth, luxury and status. The “Game” is set up in such a way that each of the contestants tries to compete for the affections of those privileged to be citizens of “The Capital”. These elite citizens can spend exorbitant sums of money to send aid to the contestants of their choice to try to ensure their survival. The “Game” is further rigged by the “Gamekeeper” in ways that tend to favor some contestants, so ultimately the contests are deadly shams.

Their purpose is to show the 12 districts the punishment that will be meted out should they ever again disobey “The Capital”, the futility of resistance and also to supply hope that one could survive the games to attain the benefits of a privileged citizen.

I’ve read the entire trilogy and last month saw the second of the three films “Catching Fire”. While the books have a few logical flaws, their use of the viewpoint of Katniss as narrator makes it a brilliantly emotional read. The movies translation of the books is superb and I must admit that I’ve shed many tears while experiencing both. The book’s author “Suzanne Collins” has said:

“ that the inspiration for The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the invasion of Iraq. The two "began to blur in this very unsettling way" and the idea for the book was formed.

The Greek myth of Theseus served as a major basis for the story, with Collins describing Katniss as a futuristic Theseus, and Roman gladiatorial games provided the framework. The sense of loss that Collins developed through her father's service in the Vietnam War was also an influence on the story, with Katniss having lost her father at age 11, five years before the story begins.[3] Collins stated that the deaths of young characters and other "dark passages" were the most difficult parts of the book to write…

At the end of this guest blog I’ll provide links for those interested in further exploring the phenomenon of “The Hunger Games”, but now I want to delve into the metaphor that this series presents about our life today in America, because I see parallels to our current American crisis.

Last night I watched the season conclusion of the popular TV contest/reality/singing show “The X Factor” and as I drifted off to sleep the idea for this piece began to form in my mind. While we are nowhere yet near the widespread poverty and misery of “Panem”, our America has been lately displaying the signs of a possible “Panem-like” future and I can see the signs in much of the “reality” programming that now pervade our televisions. Please let me explain. Read more of this post
