Survival Cement & More Great Reader Tips
A funny brain fart
award goes to Lauren Tannehill, wife of Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill. She pulled a huge ‘whoops’ when she left her
hubby’s AR-15 in the back of their rental car!
And where I live we think we’ve finally finished with snow but a drunk
MI woman got stuck in a treestand so she called 911 to report that she got stuck in
her ‘tree house’ after getting into a fight with a friend (lots of lame folks
here).
We were happy to hear Ruger and Smith & Wesson will stop
selling handguns in CA rather than comply with stupid new microstamping rules…can’t
tell you how many businesses have left the Golden State rather than put up with
its socialist politicians.
Speaking of AR’s…every
round you send downrange with a gas-operated AR blows dirt into the receiver
which accumulates on the trigger. Spray
down the trigger group with a good blast of brake-cleaning fluid to prevent
build-ups. Thanks to John B
One
of the most useful substances one can use outdoors is Survival Cement.
This mixture of mud and grasses can be used for a multitude of
projects, from construction of shelters, cooking structures, kilns and food
caches, to wrapping food for clay baking (as seen in my articles on these
subjects in Wilderness Way
magazine ) and much more.
Survival
cement has been used throughout the eons of history in countless ways.
It is simple to make, the ingredients are easy to come by and it
is one of the most durable resources available in a primitive situation. In
fact, during a trip to Utah a couple of years ago we encountered some Anasazi
ruins that were many hundreds, if not thousands of years old where the survival
cement was still intact…[Editors note: And they are. I studied the Anasazi and visited their
dwellings when I attended ASU.]

Tax Benefits of Owning a Small Farm
Being
a small farm owner entitles you to certain tax benefits
, but
careful attention must be paid to keep accurate and detailed records. The IRS
requires that you show a clear intent to make a profit. If you do not show a
clear intent to profit from your small farm, the IRS may re-classify your farm
as a hobby instead of a farm business. If your farm gets re-classified as a
hobby you will not be able to enjoy the tax benefits of owning a small farm.

I’ve also found
that small dixie cups work well for
starting plants, and as far as getting my seeds, for most like peppers
tomatoes, musk melon and watermelon, I just purchase, a few of each, remove the
seeds rinse and spread them out on news paper before planting season and let
them dry. Once I harvest, I do the same thing and have an abundance of seeds
every year. >>Shawn
Super Hand Cleaner
I was splitting firewood and got pitch on my hands.
Usually I use hand cleaner, which doesn't work very well. Today I decided to
try rubbing alcohol. It worked great!

Always Clean
Shower
If you have a glass shower, use a squeegee on the glass
every time you finish showering. This absolutely eliminates grimy soap scum and
saves tons of time scrubbing, especially if you have hard water that stains
very easily. I used to spend literally hours scrubbing hard water stains and
soap scum off the shower doors. Now, I simply swipe the glass after showering
and I have beautiful, clean, streak-free shower doors. I cannot remember the last
time I actually had to get out glass and shower cleaner to scrub them!

Gnats!
A great way to repel gnats is the use of vanilla. Mix
vanilla extract with a little water and dab it around your neck, eyes, etc. You
will smell nice to people but bad to gnats.
