Use Your Urge to Splurge

The Urge to Splurge

Sometimes we all get the urge to splurge or buy something that is unneeded out of boredom. When I think I hear the call of the mall, I pay a bill instead.

However, I sure would appreciate your making a visit to our online store.  All purchases support our efforts and through Christmas a surprise bonus items will be included with each purchase.  I believe nearly every item includes shipping too!

Thank you in advance…Bruce!

Are You Suffering from Eleutherophobia? My Last Thanksgiving Message

"In our country, the lie
has become not just a moral category
but a pillar of the State."

-- Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Are you Suffering from Eleutherophobia plus my annual Thanksgiving message

In 2014, there are tens of millions of Americans that are anonymously leading lives of quiet desperation…

I wish everyone a happy, fruitful Thanksgiving.

I’d like to extend my thanks to all of my friends, family and others for their support for our efforts at providing free, useful resources to those in need  and for your purchases from our storefront which fund these efforts.

The average American is worse off this Thanksgiving than in previous years, which has been a depressing trend.  Any student of history knows that our rapidly growing income disparity is creating class struggle which ultimately will end in some form of class warfare.

In 1999 we started our first self reliance group with monthly meetings at our 38-acre farm.  We hosted various speakers and even offered certified pistol training on our private range.  However, after a Fox News helicopter flew over our property and told viewers of our ‘compound’ we’ve kept a much lower profile, rejecting requests to appear on various TV shows including NatGeo’s Extreme Prepper show.

I started the Poor Man in 2009 under the delusion that people would welcome the mostly free resources we have offered to help folks make or save a buck and to make them aware of how our government has rapidly overwhelmed our nation with red tape and ridiculous policies.

There has been scant support, especially on facebook.  Therefore, we’re now going to post these resources to only to certain groups and on Twitter.

I’ll continue to make posts [probably once or twice a week] here through January 18th and I’ll keep our main website open as well until through that date.

Besides, I’m having a whole lotta fun with my new, Exotic Cutie site and its related RetroGuy.net storefront!

But I have to ask you…

Are you in better shape financially than you were last Thanksgiving?  If so, you should consider yourself to be very fortunate because most Americans are not.  As you chow down on turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce this Thursday, please remember that there are millions of Americans that simply cannot afford to eat such a meal.  According to a shocking new report that was just released by the National Center on Family Homelessness, the number of homeless children in the U.S. has reached a new all-time high of 2.5 million.  And right now one out of every seven Americans rely on food banks to put food on the table.

Yes, life is very good at the moment for Americans at the top end of the income spectrum.  The stock market has been soaring and sales of homes worth at last a million dollars are up 16 percent so far this year.  But most Americans live in a very different world.  The percentage of Americans that are employed is about the same as it was during the depths of the last recession, the quality of our jobs continues to go down, the rate of homeownership in America has fallen for seven years in a row, and the cost of living is rising much faster than paychecks are.  As a result, the middle class is smaller this Thanksgiving than it was last Thanksgiving, and most Americans have seen their standards of living go down over the past year.

Have you noticed how what starts off as small, occasional encroachments on our rights, justified in the name of greater safety, becomes routine, wide-ranging abuses so entrenched as to make reform all but impossible?

We saw this happen with the police and their build-up of military arsenal, ostensibly to fight the war on drugs. The result: a transformation of America’s law enforcement agencies into extensions of the military, populated with battle-hardened soldiers who view “we the people” as enemy combatants.

The same thing happened with the government’s so-called efforts to get tough on crime by passing endless laws outlawing all manner of activities. The result: an explosion of laws criminalizing everything from parenting decisions and fishing to gardening and living off the grid.

Whether people know it or night, the world is in an economic depression. In the following interview with Australia's news program The Business, Jim Rickards explains how that can be the case despite positive growth and declining unemployment, and why this depression looks nothing like the 1930s.

This is one of the primary reasons I started the Poor Man Survival series so many years ago but alas, few have paid attention or have supported our efforts.  With that in mind, we’ll be ending the Poor Man site in January.  We’ll keep the blog going but with fewer postings.

10 Tips to Survive Through the 2016 Bubble and New Economy

10 Tips To Survive During the 2016 Social Media Bubble and the New Economy…

Social media could become a major bubble.  Money made from hype more than
from sales.  How could a company like Facebook’s math add up?  Investors
showed excitement when Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion.  Making
each employee at WhatsApp worth over $300 million and acquiring 500
million users where each user needs to be at the value of $300 to break
even on the acquisition.

By using arithmetic it doesn’t seem like this
acquisition is anything close to a bargain yet investors are excited.
Don’t forget Facebook also tried to acquire Snapchat for $3 billion.  A
service that has zero revenue, 30 million users (making each user worth
$100), and yet Mark Zuckerberg is still described as a genius.  A genius
he might be but he is still only human.

The $2 billion dollar acquisition for Oculus which is 1000 times more than what is raised on
Kickstarter does not seem like a bargain.  Yet, it might be so amazing
that it could become Facebook’s main money maker and put Xbox out of
business.  Here are ways to survive the next economic recession during the
year 2017 if the Social Media Bubble actually happens.  Hopefully, though
it won’t.

1.       Rent your car via RelayRides
2.       Become a Lyft or Uber driver to earn part time income
3.       Don’t buy soda and instead use Soda Stream and make all your
carbonated beverages at    home.
4.      Kick out your roommate and rent out your home to travelers through
Airbnb or HomeAway.  It will probably also cover your own part of the
rent.
5.      If you seek to create a business don’t seek investors.  Seek crowdfunding.
6.      Find a way where you can earn small incomes by selling on Fiverr
7.      Provide simulation classes with the Oculus Rift headset when it goes
mainstream and potentially dominates our lives.
8.      Embrace the new sharing economy.
9.      If you find a smartphone app that you really want but need to pay for.
Find a competitor offering a similar service for free.  Nowadays, internet
based businesses are willing to lose money and not earn money for a long
time as a way to get a membership base.
10.     Buy less and reuse more.  With China and India growing and becoming
more of a consumer based society.  The price of all resources will
probably go up and become a lot more expensive.

Old Car Headlights

My car is nearly ten years old. I plan on driving it as long as I can, but one thing bothered me. I do a lot of night driving on the highway. The cloudy lenses on my headlights cut down on how much I could see at night.

I priced the kits that are available in the auto parts store, but figured I could do it just as well with what I had around the house. I started by using a kitchen scouring pad and cleanser. After a little rubbing, most of the imperfections were gone. After rinsing off the cleanser, I sprayed it with cooking spray and rubbed it in. The results were impressive.

Shower Door Cleaner

I don't like cleaning shower doors, so I apply Rain-X® to them. I use the same product that I use on my car's windshield. The water and soap scum runs right off, and it saves me a bunch of cleaning time. I reapply it every four months or so.

Frugal Holiday Gift Ideas
A consumable gift is great for folks who don't need more "stuff." A store in our area sells soup mixes, dried beans, dehydrated vegetable flakes, and other soup ingredients in bulk. I plan to purchase an assortment to pack in baskets. Perhaps I'll include a pretty cloth napkin in the bottom and a wooden spoon attached to the handle with a bow. It will be inexpensive, practical, and appreciated on the cold winter days that will be coming.

Skills
Education and skills are things that no one can ever take away from you! You can lose your wonderful job, you can lose all your money and investments, you can lose all your networking connections, but you'll always have what you know how to do for yourself.

5 Ways to Donate Without Spending Money
It may seem that every time you turn around someone is asking for a donation, especially around this time of year. Bells are jingling, charities are calling, and solicitations are coming in the mail. But before you drain your budget on your favorite causes or guilty obligations, consider other options for donating that actually bring a positive result for you as well as those you are helping.

Mass Delusions throughout the land

Poor Man Survival

Self Reliance tools for independent minded people…

You cannot plow a field by turning it over in your mind.

—mass delusions everywhere.

People seem to believe their governments are almighty beings capable of performing magic—water into wine, debt into wealth.

Here are some of the biggest myths we see in the system today:

1. The dollar will continue to be the dominant currency.

This is a total farce. Grumblings grow louder around the world to establish a new non-dollar financial system, and China has taken the lead to make this a reality.

2. The US is still the dominant military power in the world.

If you measure by the quality of trained personnel, this is true. But what good is all of that military power if you can’t afford to do anything with it?

3. The police exist to protect the people.

Wrong again. With so much civil asset forfeiture taking place at the point of a gun (federally funded assault rifles), it’s clear they’re far more concerned about protecting those that maintain the status quo than protecting you.

4. Elections make a difference

Completely false. Most Western governments borrow money to pay interest on the money they’ve already borrowed.

In the US, they spend so much on mandatory entitlements and interest they could eliminate almost the entire government and still not run a balanced budget.

At that level of desperation, it matters not who’s in power.

5. Your bank is safe

Your bank might HAVE a safe. But if you look at objective data, many banks in the West have incredibly thin levels of capital and liquidity—the exact opposite of what a safe bank is supposed to have.

Oh yeah, they’re backed by poorly capitalized deposit insurance funds, which are guaranteed by insolvent governments.

And bear in mind that even if your bank is reasonably capitalized, you are still guaranteed to lose money on a tax adjusted, inflation adjusted basis if you you’re holding your savings there.

6. You have to go to college in order to get ahead

Quite the opposite—going to college in many cases can get you behind; just ask any 36-year old still paying down that $100,000 student loan debt.

The world is a big place full of opportunity. Skills and experience matter more than pieces of paper.

Here’s a better option, especially for young people: head overseas, and become an apprentice to a successful, knowledgeable individual that you respect.

Any young person who thinks that going to college is a good idea should just ask any of their unemployed friends saddled with $100,000 of debt if it was worth it.

7. I saw it on TV so it must be true.

Ufff. The mainstream media exist to paint a distorted version of reality so that people are kept placated, docile and largely clueless about what really goes on in the world.

8. Debt doesn’t matter because we owe it to ourselves

Whoever first said this must have a lot of whips and chains in his closet because he seems to enjoy pain.

If we owe the debt to ‘ourselves,’ that means that we will need to default on ourselves.

This means no more Social Security, Medicare, etc. It means causing the US Federal Reserve to become insolvent and spark a currency crisis. It means causing the collapse of every bank in the country.

Sure, no biggie.

9. The United States is the Land of the Free

Draconian surveillance efforts on its citizens. Punitive taxes, fines and regulation. Rising police state. Telling people what they can or can’t put in their bodies, how to grow their food, who to adore, who to hate. Preventing them to collect their own rainwater and live off the grid.

SIDEBAR:

Most Americans that collect money from the government each month are not abusing the system.  Many truly are incapable of taking care of themselves, and others are just receiving government benefits (such as Social Security) that they feel that they have earned by a lifetime of hard work.  But with each passing year the number of Americans jumping on board “the safety net” continues to grow rapidly, and a lot of these people should be able to take care of themselves.  Today, the American people collectively receive more money from the government than they pay in taxes.  And remember, the federal government uses our money to build roads, inspect our food and fund the military as well.  So what does this say about our economy?  Could it survive without all of these debt-fueled transfer payments?  And what does this say about our society?  At one time, our nation was known for our Protestant work ethic.  What would our forefathers say about us today?  The following are 21 facts that prove that dependence on the government is out of control in America…

1. According to a Congressional Budget Office study that was just released, approximately 60 percent of all U.S. households get more in transfer payments from the government than they pay in taxes.  Here is more about this stunning report from Mark J. Perry’s Carpe Diem blog
